Man Doom 3 is gonna rock on the Radeon...its gonna suffer some on the GeoForce cards...got some Radeon lovin'!! Bump Mapping is where it's at right now. Read this....
Voodoo Extreme has been doing an interview with the all mighty John Carmack, at id software. Here's a short blurb he did about ATI's Radeon and support of Doom.
ATI Radeon: All features work properly, but I needed to disable some things in the driver. I will be working with ATI to make sure everything works as well as possible. The third texture unit will allow the general lighting path to operate a bit more efficiently than on a GeForce. Lacking the extra math of the register combiners, the specular highlights don't look as good as on a GeForce.
3DFX Voodoo4/5, S3 Savage4/2000, Matrox G400/450, ATI Rage128, Nvidia TNT[2]: Much of the visual lushness will be missing due to the lack of bump mapping, but the game won't have any gaping holes. Most of these except the V5 probably won't have enough fill-rate to be very enjoyable.
Great to see that the Radeon will be working great with Doom3! (a game I'm look forward to)

I read that interview, but came away with something different.
I could be off, but from Carmack's tone it seemed like any video card out right now will be lacking to display Doom3 in all its glory.
Then again Doom3 probably won't be out for another 1-2 years, hopefully by then more bump mapping and T&L intensive cards will be out.

I have to wonder.... how can ANY developer say video cards will be lacking what is needed (in this example) to display Doom3 in all its glory... how can one tell what the 'glory' really is if they don't have that magic video card to test it http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/wink.gif
I dunno, Quake III was supposed to be this mind blowing graphic/visual intense experience. I have a kick-*** vid card... and I'm still waiting to be blown away when I play Q3. I find other companies who use the Q3 engine have visually satisfied me better than Q3.

I agree with you on that one Aurora. By the time Doom 3 is out we will be 2 or 3 generations past the video cards out today. And I really wasnt that impressed with the Quake 3 graphic. however I remember reading where they didn't push all the eye candy becuase it was intended for fast multiplayer action.

That's a good point. Doom 3 will probably be more graphics intensive because ID is trying to make it a great single player experience. I still love single player FPS, and I couldn't understand why ID abandoned that for Q3A. I'm glad that they are going for cutting edge technology this time, because in a year or two when Doom 3 will be out, graphics cards will have caught up. We'll also have to see if Doom 3 can stand up to Duke Nukem Forever, which is another one I'm looking forward to.

ID abandoned decent single player games after Doom2. I mean, Quakes 1 and 2 were ok, but though they were a quantum leap in graphics, and in player handling (the way you controlled your character and the feedback you got - ID's main strength. I'm not explaining this very well am I?). I got Quake and Terra Nova around the same time and found that Terra Nova was a much better, and more revolutionary game, than Quake. But no-one bought Terra Nova. Once I finished Quake I only played Multiplayer. It was uninstalled a loooong time ago, but TN is still sitting on my HDD.
The problem with ID is that almost everyone (bar Carmack) who was involved in Dooms 1 and 2 has left the firm. Will ID be able to produce a game with the same tension, the same feeling of absolute bloody terror, with a new team?
Plus, this stuff from Carmack worries me a touch. What made Doom good was the sheer number of monsters chasing after you, not the graphics, which were designed to run fast, not look great. It seems like he wants to put loads of eye candy in rather than concentrate on making it a playable game. Give us tons of monsters, Carmack, and make them chase us! And each other! And give us the super shotgun!

Agreed! Games as of late just *chunk* out in areas with 'too much happening' Like, I love battles and fights where it is non-stop action, usually this requires you to fend off several creatures at one time. I know somewhere there is a direct correlation between the 'impressive graphics' and how icky my game runs when I have more than a few enemies all making move and actions on the screen at one time. I can say I have not seen/read/or heard enough about Doom 3 to figure out if graphics will take the priority over huge intense fights with LOTS of enemies, but *this* feature is out there. Have you seen the tech demo for Serious Sam? This game feels so much like 'old id'.. it feels more like an id game that id's own last 3 games to me. Serious Sam has what we loved about old doom... LOTS of monsters coming at you. The single-player experience from the demo rocked. You even had this large number of monsters in nice HUGE outdoor areas. If you're looking for a 'Doomish' gaming experience, Serious Sam is a game you may want to look into.

Blasting lots of simple minded monsters is cool for a time but recent games like Psycho Circus and the Serious Sam demo have convinced me that that kind of thing alone isn't enough to carry a game any more. I find hunting down an intelligent foe like the marines in Half Life or the Skaarj in Unreal much more satisfying and challenging to be honest. A bit of both is fine to keep things interesting, but I'm not overly keen on these games that are largely copying the gameplay of Doom so long after its release now - none of them are as fun as Doom was, not by far.
With all the talent now at id though I'm sure it's going to be a class game, especially if they do try to do cool new things in more than the graphics department (which I suspect they will). And damn straight they'd better keep the super shotgun, as long as id throw in some new weapons too for once. ;)

quake 3 had the stuff built in it to look very beutifull, if youve ever played Heavy Metal: FAKK2, you will see how beutifull the quake3 engine can get.

Couldn't agree more there. The levels in FAKK 2 were wonderfuly designed. The Ritual crew did a great job of showing off what the Q3 Engine can do.

Yeah, I second that. Ritual did a great job. I was really amazed at the graphics. Quake 3 had good graphics, but nothing really blowed me away, but FAKK 2 did that. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/smile.gif

I agree that FAKK2 shows what the Q3 engine can do, but the graphics of Eliteforce (also Q3 engine) look better. The use of colours is a bit too ... generous.
That makes the game look a bit ***.

Can't wait for a new single player FPS from id! The Doom games rocked. I can remember being in junior high and Doom 1 scaring the crap out of me when I played in the dark. For multiplayer, though, does anyone think/know if they will include a co-op mode? I'd love to battle through huge levels of monsters with a friend!
I made a post about this in the General Games forum and nobody can think of a game like this as of yet...weird... :-)
Hey, didn't Carmack say that ovedraw will be much bigger than in Q3A... and Q3A has 3x overdraw in many levels. Anyway, overdraw increase means two things. Lots of enemies just queueing up to be blown to bits, or lots of sliding walls and huge loads of geometry. NV20... where art thou?

What made doom so great, is that it broke new ground and did things that nobody had ever seen/done before. This is why Half-Life has been so succesful, i mean they took Single Player FPS to a new lvl..
If ID wants to live up to thier reputation with the DOOM series they should NOT give us a Kiss Phsyco Circus with a new game engine! (Not taking anything away from that game, it was a good first game for that company). ID has to break new ground both on the technology front (this wont be a problem) but also on the single player side of things, which will definatly be something ID hasnt done since the orignal Doom1, Good Luck ID! you have a lot to live up to, and i hope it comes out well!

We'll have to see about that. The only company that have given some sort of indication that they are maybe working on 64bit texturing is 3dfx.

Yeah. I just get the feeling that 3DFX have more up their sleeve than they let on. Why are their cards so **** now? Is it because they have been developing something new??? ID has talked extensively with 3DFX, HRmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Elite force was still just coridoors and rooms though. FAKK2 used the Quake 3 engine to successfully create a gorgeous village, a route along towering cliffs and most impresive of all a swamp complete with huge, gorgeous trees. That's a lot harder than doing space ship interiors in my opinion. Elite Force looked great, but FAKK2 impressed me more when it comes down to visuals. In fact I enjoyed it more overall. :)
