Arcadian,
Hitman and Hidden & Dangerous were just a bit to slow and tactical for me http://63.146.109.206/ubb/smile.gif They appeal to a load of people though and I'm simply not good enough to play. UT on the other hand... Soldier of Fortune was one of those strange games I'd followed during its 18month development. When I first saw it and played, it was amazing.. then it took a bit of a nose dive until it finally got released. THe quake 2 engine began to show it's age too... Shame really.

Single Player has to be Half Life. Havent played Deus Ex yet though.
Multiplayer has GOT to be Counterstrike. While it's not (yet) a stand alone game, just a mod, it has the most addictive and fast paced game play I've ever experienced. All I need to do now is get a group of friends to play with, because on public servers there's too much rush and not enough teamwork. But that's another thread all together....

I know this might sound crazy in this day and age of "supra-3d-whiz-bang-I-got-a-joystick-with-a-hat-keyboards-r-4-losers", but I STILL like DOOM and DOOM2. I especially love all the add-ons and mods out there for it. Ihe game has everything I have ever wanted in a FPS....lots of action and SIMPLE gameplay. I've tried Half-Life and Quake(1 thru 3) and I must say that I don't get why people love Quake 3 so much other than it is visually entertaining. I s**8 SOOOOO bad at it I can't even beat the comp!! All I end up doing is running in circles and dying by my own rockets! I also HATE the "3d-jump-off-walls" crap. I loved Half-Life single player when I first started playing it. It truely seemed to have everything I had ever wnated in a singleplayer game. Towards the end, about 3/4 of the way in to the game however, I got VERY bored. The AI seemed to get.. umm... more stupid as the game progressed. The big boss guy in the pit I found had a lot of bugs. Sometimes he didn't react to you being there at all. I dunno.. characters and enemies just seemed redundent after awhile. It kept me totally enthused for so long.. then the satasfaction of playing the single player game just seemed to leave.

Remember Alien Doom ('course ya do)? Easily one of the best mods ever, certainly yet to be bested as a single player mod (although They Hunger is pretty cool). It wasn't until AvP came out that any game to do with Aliens (even commercial Aliens games) came close to being as good. :)

I think everyone disliked the Xen levels. They looked great but played badly. I hated the jumping puzzles especially (I've hated jumping puzzles since Wonderboy on the Master System and can only barely tolerate them if they're few and far between and done in third person). I couldn't do the long jump thing (of course, I only worked it out AFTER finishing it) so I ended up Gauss Gun jumping my way through the initial bits with jumping puzzles. The end boss was a tad dumb but it was fun delivering the final shot with the Glock, James Bond stylee. ;)
On a slightloy different subject, I was quite impressed with how Gearbox did the Xen levels in Opposing Force though. They took note of how people hated that part of Half-Life and somehow made them good. Roll on Blue Shift.

half-life was an awesome single player game besides the xen levels, i used the god mode 2 complete the xen levels, the end was pretty lame 2. My new single player addiction is now Deus Ex, what a brilliant game!, i 've played it several times and still enjoy it.
For multiplayer team game it is counterstrike, the graphics are old but gameplay rocks.
The good old deatch match is quake2, i never liked quake3, it is the only game i uninstalled within 6 hrs, i only played the ut demo, my computer is 2 crappy for the unreal engine.

And yes, the Xen stuff sucked. But I wont slag one of the best overall stories for some lame bits at the end.

Single player for me is Half-Life (and I must be the only one who likes the Xen levels, but then again I'm in the minority by really liking Blood 2 also) and the They Hunger mod is also top notch.
Multiplayer=UT hands down (I just wish I had broadband so I could at least see who kills me), but I have problems with anyone who loves UT but says Q3 sucks. Q3 doesn't have the same teamplay goodness out of the box as UT, but they have too much in common to love one but hate the other.

About Q3, the only reason i do not like it as much as UT, and actually partially go up to saying that it's a bad game is because it runs so slower than UT does, and also because when i tried it online i was on a 33.6 dialup.. so my opinion could change, but something interesting that's coming soon is Quake III Team Arena.. it's aim is bassically to bring what UT brought with it's first release. Q3TA actually falls short (in CGW they did a comparison that shows why, and the catch is that it's going to cost... it's not a free addon. Nonetheless, those who really enjoy Q3 but are envious of UT would probably find it worthwhile.

Definitely Half Life with the emphasis on CounterStrike. The action is just so much more realistic than Quake or UT. When I equip with a big gun, my character slows down and I can't maneuver quickly. Switch to a SMG instead and I'm dancing all over the place.
Those others just seem so phony with everyone running pell mell all over the place jumping and switching bwtween their 10 guns. Bleah. Maybe its because I don't have the reaction speed of a 16-year old any more . . . .
TFC also gets my vote, but CS is a little nicer because you tend to be a little more careful with your life.

i went from Res. Evil thru Unreal but became totally addicted to on-line UT CTF Instagib and haven't played anything else much since Nov. 99. there are some excellent servers w/nice people playing. the prob i had w/half life was the joystick config. UT provides better manueverability with the joystick + mouse which i prefer (tho most peeps use the keyboard). my system is modest: AMD 400, 64M RAM, TNT2. i run UT at 600x800 at medium settings and with a cable modem, it rocks on-line.

I used to favor UT over Q3A. However recently after upgrading from a celeron 500 with Voodoo 2 to a celeron 896 with GeForce 2 I find Q3A much better. The sse really makes Q3 rock as do those extra 400Mhz. The lack of glide support for GeForce probably contributes to my switch as well.

UT is the training wheels of FPS games. It is more user friendly than Q3, but the physics and "feel" are poop. UT online is just dozens of peeps standing behind a corner, loading up six rockets and shooting at anything that moves. It lacks something, tactics? strategy? I dunno. When I play UT I feel like I'm controlling a mech. When I play Q3a (RA3 is recommended) I feel like I'm in the game. Although I prefer UT CTF. I'm anxiously awaiting TeamArena. I can't stand the UT maps. They look like big blue-grey blocks. What is this? TOmbraider2?
I just stared dabbling in CS. That is some fun stuff.

If you go by the servers which report to gamespy (Which is probably most of them) Half-Life is the most played miltiplayer FPS on the net...by a VERY wide margin. Quake 3 arena is in second place, and Unreal Tournament rounds out in third.

Just because more people play a game, it doesn't make it superior.
That is like saying the Backstreet Boys are good because they sell a lot of records. And we all know that isn't true.

If you read my above post more carefully you will notice that I never said which is better. I have no idea because I have never played UT. I do disagree though on your point on the amount of players vs the quality of the game. If, once everyone or most everyone has had a chance to try both but then chose to play one over the other, then I think that it's safe to assume that the more popular game is most likely "more fun" than the less popular one. See the overwhelming majority of players playing Half-Life? That says something to me. It doesnt to you?
All in all I could care less about a game with even "hollywood" quality graphics if the gameplay isn't there. To me, graphics is a secondary consideration.

My favorite is Unreal Tournament .
But lately i have been playing a lot of Quake 3 because i get much better pings on Q 3 servers than i get on UT servers http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/frown.gif
Does the same happen to you ??
Could it be that it s because the Netcode from Q 3 is better than UTīs ??

I know I'm probably going to get trashed for this, but the first Dark Forces kicked straight up ***. Yeah, with all the new stuff, you might think I'm an idiot, but FPS games just don't get any better.

UT is strictly ghetto bloodlettin' fun, ain't no two wayz 'bout it!! (read: Good)
Since my recent DSL setup I've also gone back to halflife...still the bomb, but UT prevails.
Haven't scrapped up the dough for Q3 yet, but I dug the demo.

Yeah, I have to agree with this statement. I still think the best netcode that I have experienced was Tribes. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/smile.gif

UT hands down! Some of the best graphics I've seen with creative weaponry and level design! The ngWorldStats, at ut.ngworldstats.com, let you see how you compare against some of the "better" or "worse" players online. Great stuff.

You may not have said it was better, but you certainly implied it. And then you went on to justify your remark by stating that "it's safe to assume that the more popular game is most likely "more fun" than the less popular one".
I am just stating that just because something is popular, that does not make it good.
I agree that graphics are secondary to gameplay, but I can't agree that just because a lot people play a game that it is good.

I do not understand your reply at all. Are you saying that thousands of people will play a game that sucks? Are you saying that once a "better" game is released that these people will not eventually migrate to the new game?
I am not the only one disagreeing here. The history of gaming also doesn't jive with your views.
I would have to say that the number of players of a game long after it's release is THE defining indication of how "good" of "fun" that game is.
Half-Life is over two years old yet there are over ten thousand people playing it daily on the internet as opposed to around three thousand each for Q3A and UT. Again, this says nothing to you LOL?

Well, I play Tribes ok? Tribes is fun to me. It doesnt have the numbers of gamers like CS and HL, so does that mean its not fun or good?? No, I think its fun. What decides for me if a game is good or bad is if i have fun playing it. A million people could play a game, but if I dont find it fun, then, i will think it sucks. On the other hand, I agree that if a game has been out for 2 years, and you have more people playing it then any other game, then chances are there is something good about that game. ahh what do i know, is to early to think.

Sorry never played any Q3 mods. Just because I didn't like the themes of the maps, was bored by the sub par sound (which is crazy, 'cos graphics are O.K.), didn't like the Q2 weapons, was pissed of by the totally dumb A.I. (in CTF / DM is O.K.).
That does not mean that the game is bad for anyone, but just that I didn't like it.
Maybe I'll check out that mod.
But we talked about favorite FPS and I understood that we discuss the versions that shipped (including Patches up to now), not what other people made of them.
id make cool 3D engines but the should keep their paws off the gameplay.
Btw, !!!please!!! don't be angry if I don't like Q3, no reason to cry - it's just an opinion, okay?

I have to go against the grain on the single person fps with Wheel of Time. The graphics are stunning with the unreal engine, and there is a compelling story behind the game. Also you need to take a bit more cerebral approach to gameplay, which is a welcome change to the fast paced world of the fps.
Multiplayer has to be counter-strike. This game is an addiction. I stopped playing this a year and a half ago when I finished college and left the T-1 but now that I have a cable modem, I have fell off the wagon again.

The Wheel of Time is the best FPS ever made. I dare you Quakers and UT-ers to show your faces in WoT Arena, you'll get dead fast. And if you thought CTF was fun, wait until you see Citadel.

A clarification of my former posts for Althor
I was never defending the position of Q3A specifically. Out of the box, Q3A is the worst FPS out right now, in my opinion. The opinion I am defending however *is* that thousands of people *will not* continue to play a game that *sucks*.
I never get angry over a game and lol I never cry; it just isn't worth it.

Glad to read that, 'cos everything else would be a bit silly, which doesn't mean that it doesn't happen from time to time as you can read between the lines of some posts.

Yeah ! I forgot that one. It's a REAL mess.
I hope romero got slapped im the face for that crappy game by seeing that his pal Warren Spector created such a superior game like Deus Ex. (but let's not forget he's the boss at ION storm and payed for deus Ex)

I think Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force has to be counted among the best FPS games out there.
Quite frankly, it took me by surprise, I thought it would be another piece of crap in a box with "Star Trek" on the outside, but it's really cool.
If you haven't tried it, and you have a fast connection, download the demo.

I haven't tried "Wheel of time". Whats the storyline? How is the single player mode, or is it a multiplayer like UT and Q3? I haven't bought a game in a while. I was waiting for Red Alert 2. Let us know if its worth our money. Do they have a demo?

Wheel of Time was highly underated. The architecture and textures were fantastic in the levels. I rather enjoyed it, with the only problem being the weapons system. I always switch through weapons with q and e rather than using the number keys so switching weapons was a bit difficult. Of course, this was all solved with the THUMB utility. Anyone else think Legend are going to do a fantastic job of Unreal 2?

It's not only the graphics but the atmosphere that makes this game so cool.
Do you remember the voices in Shadar Logoth ?
I had the lights turned off and speakers turned up, I almost got a heart attack in some dark corners.

I hope that Unreal 2 is better then Unreal 1. I thought Unreal had very good graphics, but it just lacked something for me. UT on the other hand was just pure fun. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/smile.gif After seeing some of the Whell of Time stuff I am pretty sure Legend will do a good job. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/smile.gif

I would have to give it to Q2. you have to consider the tech at the time and what it brought to the industry. Unreal, UT, Q3.. yeah they had great graphics but was the level design all that great, the weapons, that much better. Nahh, I also liked Duke Nukem. great levels.
1. Q2
2. Duke Nukem
3. Half Life
4. UT
5. Unreal

Oh where oh where are you SOF fans? Damn, I know you're out there. I guess they play so long that they dont have time to post. hehe
Well, i think the major reason is for that damn WON server. If they had a decent multiplayer server I don't think that I'd ever get away from that game. Well, i guess that I'm gonna have to wait for SOF 2. but that might be a while since they just released Elite Forces, which is also a great game. Damn Raven really rocks!!
