ATI talks about 3D gaming on Notebooks and nVidia

Hey this would make a good HIGH Level tech topic. From what I've read there are many people(including myself)who are interested gaming Notebooks. And the technology is finally coming about. So, what do you guys think about "Notebook" gaming? Remember, this will affect graphic/cad design also. So tell me what you think.

I don't think a gaming notebook is very practical....
they are dificult to upgrade, screens are small and their input devices aren't very comfortable to use

Yeah, laptop gaming just isnt very practical, unless you are willing to accept a standard much lower then what you would get on a desktop system.
A major problem comes from power consumption. A laptop battery can only put out so much juice before it goes kaput and has to be recharged, but todays processors and high end 3D accelerators eat up more power than ever. So, most laptops come with slower CPU's and day before yesterday 3D chips, if they have one at all. This translates into crappy crappy crappy performance! (relativly speaking)
And, yep, you have to put up with a small screen and beany sound. The keyboard is awkward if your used to a standard 104-key. The "pointing device" is hard to get used to. DB-15 joystick ports are non-existant on laptops, so unless you can find one for a PCMCIA slot, youll have to use the USB port. (assuming you have one...most newer ones do) USB joysticks are much more expensive too from what Ive seen.
Bottom line: Wanna game on a laptop? You can try it, but good luck...

well im a prime exaple of this...my destktop system died, and i got this notebook from my school tuition(specs in sig). Sure, i cant play q3 at 1600x1200 with all the goodies on, but i can run it with it looking praticle at <30 fps. All my emulators run top-notch, and i can do heavy duty programing on it. I sure as hell wouldnt pay retail for this(~4k), but it rivals my old system i put together. The only thing i think it lacks is a hard drive(slow&small, 11gb). My batery will last for about 4 hours with all my stuff toned down, and about 2 hours with everything on. I have the first gen mobile 3d chip from ati, but it looks just as good as my tnt2, ony with 8mb of ram. as for uncomfertable input devices, i only use my usb mouse(i hate the touchpad). And im sure this would last for a good 1.5-2yrs till it becomes totally obsolete(really think gaming rigs will *need* a 2-3ghz proc then?), and since i get a deal from my school, i get a new top of the line one in my junior year.

I'm all for it men! It's bad enough that the notebooks cost 2x as much and go out of date in 6months. Might as well have some great gaming power on the side. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

As for Ati having bad drivers. The same can be said for Nvidia and 3dfx. It's just very hard to make one set of drivers work for 100% of all systems. Just think about it for a sec. Millions of systems out here, each with any numbers of hardware parts and drivers. Kind of a swirly mess of techno crap if you ask me.

Check out our Dell 8000 review which uses the Rage Mobility 128 32MB AGP4x chip. It's fast enough to play Quake 3 or UT. Obviously you'll have to stay at 640x480 or 800x600 when playing them but other games like Need For Speed Porsche all work great too. hmmmm...i have an 8meg rage mobility and i can run q3 solid at 800x600, havent tried UT yet tho. I saw the new dell laptops in their ad and i almost sh1t my pants, cause i thought mine was awsome till i looked at theirs.
