What does brushless mean?

Here's a link with a diagram. Do a search for DC motor theory to learn more.

It has to do with the DC Motor and commutation. DC Brushless motors use electrical commutation, i.e. they don't have brushes to wear down because of friction so they last longer.

Here's a quote from the link if it does work for you: "The process of switching current is called commutation. To switch the direction of curent, we have to use brushes and commutators. Commutation can also be done electronically (Brushless motors) and a brushless motor usually has a longer life. ..."

I've heard that brushless fans are quieter. Is this true?
