yeah its a hydor.. its very quiet and dosent get warm at all u can look them up at dangerden... the guys there say they are equivlent to the eheim's. no vibration that i can feel ofcourse they sit on 4 rubber sucktion cups so im sure that absorbs any of the vibration b4 getting to the case. And if u do go watercooling dont go with a cheep low flow pump i would recomend atleast a 300 g/h pump i had the 185 and it just didnt get the job done.

Oh i know i know, no low flow in this system, need high flow anyway for Maze3...which is probably what i am going to get.

Didn't think I wanted a new case, but I bought a new one anyway.
I've had the same Thumbscrew Case I built my first ATX computer in PII 350mhz. Yes, I stayed with the Thumbscrew Cases.

And one with the flash:

The paint job on the drives looks lots better when you look at it in person as do the cold cathode lights inside :p

But it's pretty nifty... that's my beast PC that scored a whopping 53 3DMarks in 3DMarks 2003 :D

The temps have gone up. 43C Idle, and 50C. But that cubbyhole ends up being a wind tunnel with the 2 80mm Intakes, and 2 80mm Exhausts. Thes case looks solid but the whole front bottom is perferrated and it sucks some major air. It sounds like a wind tunnel too. OH and I cut all the cover out in the back so it's just as open as the front. I am in the market for a new desk. Gonna get one where it's out in the open.

What is that Compaq card in the background in the Audigy.jpg???? I know its a Compaq sticker on the corner. :D

I did run out of legos to cover up the CD, and with the color scheme of grey ones at the top, just decided to leave it like that instead of mish mashing several colors together to make a panel.

The whole thing is suprisingly strong. If you imagine it being split down the middle, there is a wall right behind the motherboard making sure it doesn't touch anything metal, and also giving it a bit more strength. The whole thing is incredibly stronger than you would imagine.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and such, I am thinking about taking it apart and going with the first design (Kinda like a regular tower) but add in a couple of custom shaped windows and some other effects.

Hmm.. you know, come to think about it, I have some motorized Knex stuff laying around....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Ahh you guessed it :D That is a Vodoo3 1000 (I think) that I had at home. I was using a Trident card from like 1996, that I picked up at a PC junk store about 2 or 3 years ago. I decided I would treat myself to a nice Vodoo while I wait for the 9800 Pro to come out so I can pick up a 9700. :) I have 2 leftover Compaq PC's in my house, and sometimes I use their innards when I need stuff. Maybe I can sell one to some unsuspecting guy for some dough. :)

Here are some pictures of my main PC that i've been modding / adding bits to other the past few weeks and I would like some comments, suggestions and ideas on what to do / change / add or remove

http://www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FrontMainSmall.jpg

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FrontMain.jpg

This is an overview of the front of my PC, you can't really see much of the lights because the flash drowns it all out.

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FrontMain2.jpg

This is a close-up of the LCD screen with my nice message displayed, taken without the flash so you can see more of the lights.

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/NeonFront.jpg

This is a front view of my PC without the LCD screen enabled and without the flash. The neon string is green and goes all around the drives in the 5.25" and 3.5" bays. The front fans at the front are also green, the camera doesn't seem to pick the colour up very well but they are dark green IRL :)

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Overview.jpg

This is a side-on view of my whole PC, taken without the flash and with all the cathodes and neon strings turned on.

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/SideView.jpg

This is a side-on view of my whole PC, taken without the flash and with all the cathodes and neon strings turned on and without the side window panel on.

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FullPic.jpg

This is another side-on view of my whole PC but taken from a different angle than the one above :p

I think this helps show my window etch with neon string better because the other lights don't get in the way.

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Left.jpg

This is the left side of my PC, showing the fans / ram with the new active heat sinks I got recently and the graphics card and sound card etc.

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Middle.jpg

This is the middle of my PC with the lights on, the cables could probably be tidied up a little better but it's really hard to do because I tidied them up as much as possible already.

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Right.jpg

This is the right side of my PC showing lots of grubby hand prints all over the inside of my case :p

The hand prints can't be seen unless looking at the case about 2cm away but the flash pics them up really badly :(

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/TopFans.jpg

This is a close-up of my top fans from a better angle. They're the Akasa Nebula ones with the hurricane fan grills.

www.da014a0002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/BottomFans.jpg

This is a close-up of my bottom fans from a better angle. They're the Akasa Nebula ones with the Biohazard fan grills. I know the top one is upside down but I thought it looked like a gas mask upside down and so it goes with the biohazard theme :p

The reason for my choice in colours on the fans is I thought green on the front for cool air going in and red fans on the back for hot air going out :)

The cathodes are blue because I thought I would stick with an overall blue / red theme that the Lian-Li case has with the front HD and power LED's.

I'm currently thinking of getting 4 more smaller window etch's for around the sides of the window and maybe some neon strips to go around the window itself but so far they don't do a hot red strip just the silly pink looking red :(

Comments, suggestions and ideas are appreciated because I'm always on the lookout to add something else.

Thanks for reading.

That's what happens when you can't wait to try out a new motherboard/processor/video card, you put in just enough to hold everything in place then finish it up right later. :)

Heh, yes that free-hanging HDD is amusing. It's what I have to do with my buddy's HP pavilion sitting behind me, there just arent 3 HDD slots, so there is only one alternatve. Get a long IDE and sit it on top of or on the side of my case, or put it on top of something else.

Did you use a big washer to secure the fans without using the fancage?

Umm you can shave 5mm off the holding clips to mod it to hold a 80mm fan ;)

Also you can just remove the holder and go with a 92mm fan :)

Um its already holds an 80mm fan...are you tryign to say it can hold a 35mm thickness fan with moddage? I realize that, but im saying only a 25mm thickness fan will be flush with the holder.

Thanks :)

I think it was less than 100 dollars and I got it from www.crystalfontz.com

They also do packages now and I think it's a bit cheaper than when I bought mine with seperate parts .

The kits they do are here:

http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/select_kit.html

You can pick and mix what you want which is pretty cool :)

I live in the UK so had to get it imported and pay import tax though .

It's not that difficult to install at all, just screw the plate into your case bay like a normal optical drive and connect up the serial cable, this goes to a PCI blanking plate at the back of your PC which can also be bought. They, you just use a serial to serial cable to connect the serial port on the PCI plate to the serial port on your motherboard. You can use serial or USB but the one I have is a serial connection.

The LCD is powered by a normal floppy power cable (not a molex one) and that's about it :)

Once the LCD is connected to the serial port properly and the power is plugged in right you can use pretty much any LCD software that's designed for a variety of LCD's or you can use the Crystal Control software that CrystalFontz make themselves. I use the Crystal Control software and it works a treat no problems :)

I'm not sure who are cheaper / better, CrystalFontz or Matrix Orbital but I can say that I am very pleased with my LCD and service from CrystalFontz

If you only knew.... (about the color!)

Thanks though! I have to say, it was a royal pain in the butt to get this up and running. I regret not getting a bigger case as every slot is taken.

I ended up putting a bit too much 'Purple Ice' into my system, hence the pink color. By the time I decided it was too much and I was not going to add the dye (blue UV) or my UV cathode, I was already starting to put in components (ie, messy to drain)

My temps are rock solid right now! Very psyched. Unfortunately, my $110 Nexus 400w "quiet" PSU is a load of garbage (ie, noisey and the power rails are not that tight).

So what kind of temps?? Did you cut out the front of the case for the block?

I know those chieftech style cases have 2 80mm fans spots on the front and I can see part of one.. So did you cut it out or just put the core over it ?

I drilled out the drive bay that was in the way (where the 80mm installed fan was). I then put some holes into the front to put in 4inch screws and also drilled out my black ice extreme (which was rather scarey as the bolts are basically touching the water paths). I thought about using a dremel tool to open up the front, but there is already so much ventilation available on the case that I decided to use some rubber grommets to space it out, which lets the radiator breathe a bit more evenly. The fan attached is a delta 120mm, but I barely need to have it running (so far).

Based on Asus Probe, idle is around 37-38 with the fan hardly turning and board temps around 29-30. This compares to 41C idle with a 92mm Panaflo on at max (58cfm) on an SLK900 with board temps at 33-35. I am not using wc'ing for my gpu and nb. I know 37-38 sounds high, but after 2 hours of gaming, with the fan barely turning over, temps barely hit 40-41C, which is almost no change. 1 hour of hotcpu put it at 41C. If I turn up the fan, it will slowly drop back to the high 30's. This compares to me hitting 55-58 (and yes, 60C) on my previous setup!!

I had it running at roughly 3.35 and idle was at 39, so I say my main problem is my ambient is fairly high. I really don't care as I think my radiator can handle a lot more heat than I'm throwing at it and I can always crank up the fan if needed.

BTW, I don't think my particular 2.4 is particularly good as I'm having trouble with it getting it past 3.35.

60c?????

WOW! I never hit 100f with my SLK-900 and my Tornado 92mm @ 3000rpm even after hours of gaming...

I wonder if all the extra stuff you have (HD, etc) is causing the raised temps :)

I don't know what it is, but I was rather unhappy. One hot day (ambient in the room 70F) and it hit 59C after an hour of BF1942. With 2 intake 80mm and 2 outputs on my Lian Li, I should have had plenty of cooling. I just think it is one of 2 things. The Asus board reads the temps wrong, or the voltage problem with the Asus P4PE/L is really pushing my temps up like crazy.

What I do know is that a change of 3C after 2 hours of full load means my WC setup is doing the job.

I am very close to buying a prometia mach 2. WC'ing was fun, but I'm curious if I could sell my setup and break even :)

Those sub-zero cooling cases look nice :) But rather pricey and small IMO...

I rather stick with Water or Air for now :) Since my temps never go past 100f even when my ambient temp right now is 78f :)

I really like the Lian Li Prometia kit. Of course, all in, even if I own a standard Lian LL case, its going to cost roughly $1100 from what I gather. LOL.

I just got my water cooling setup not that long ago even if it is not installed :D but my temps were never that outrageous that it required such extreme cooling..

The only thing that I can think of that would need that cooling is to place the head right on the gpu instead of the cpu :D

What did you end up buying? How long until you've got it up? My cpu block is the Swiftech 5000, which has to be the easiest hs to install I've ever dealt with. The hardest part of the whole setup was getting the frothing out of my reservoir (I put too much Purple Ice in) and isolating the pump from the case (noise problems).

Peltier, eh? Not bad! I have the option of addint a pelt in the future, but I didn't want to have to deal with another psu, etc. In all honesty, a Prommy started making more sense to me as I started adding up how much all of this stuff costs, etc.

EDIT: Imagestation is screwin' me, ill try to fix it...

Well, I finally got a hold of my pop's digital camera and thought it was time to post some pics.

1)Pic of my system from far away, got my crappy polk audio speakers from the HP (getting a summer job so that will soon change) but for now got my loud a$$ stereo. Look to the right- headphones, pocket pc:D big speaker and quite stylish $50 lamp from JCPenny:p to the left we've got the stereo and some cd's plus some workspace and some drawers where i store tools, manuals and extra parts...niiice and organized. Oh yeah, my nice print...pretty nice, came with frame included. And, yes, my legs can fit under the desk, it's deceptivly large (that's a 19" moniter so...)

2)Close up, pretty self explanatory

3)Pic of the inside of my case, pretty messy and crowded. I'm getting round cables soon, so no biggie (if you think that's why my airflow is being cut off, you're right...and I tried moving some stuff around but no go, except I moved the mobo power away from the CPU fan side facing the intake)

Well, that's it, you've got the guided tour. Sorry for the image size, but that was the camera default and I was too lazy to fix it. :D So, tell me what you think:)

Fans are actually pretty bright and it also has a 12 inch red cold cathode. I managed to mount two red 92mm quad LED fans on the front behind the plastic cover so you can see the red through the front grill.
120mm red LED fans for the side intake and top exhaust. Window is a result of a failed case design. I couldn't get a decent pic with the flash on my camera off so this is all I got. Yeah, I know pretty average looking.

knuckles644, I took one look at that case and new it was an Enermax 710 :)

I own it and its a great case, but since video cards seems to get larger and larger... The HD cage at the bottom always interferes with my video card :(

I guess I should get an ATI, since they are smaller then the nvidia cards :)

Well, Colossus, since I only have one hard drive, I'm going to take the bottom cage out and stick the hdd at the bottom of the top 3.5" cage. The thing interfers with airflow anyway in combonation with my vid card. I'm just too lazy to do it;) I'll do it when I hook my new Sunons up (ohh yah, 80 combined CFM of intake...woooo):)

Ohh my PSU is an Enermax, they come with a 92mm fan underneath:) And all I did was get some nice bezel covers, stealthed my Sunbeam behind an old bay cover, and did some wire management. I really haven't modded yet.

This summer I'll break out a dremel though:D

Yeah I need to do that too. As of right now only the power on/off, reset cords are touching the mobo at all and that's only for a couple on inches. I'd like to put on on the bottom left corner so I can put my cathode switch cords through without much problems.

thx for the comment's

Actually I didn't paint anything tho I wish I could take the credit there. Just a real quality brushed aluminum case. I used rubbing alcohol to clean it up on the inside then used glass cleaner to shine it.

You might have a hard time finding this case now. Kingwin has replaced it with a new model.

For anyone who has this case I would recommend you cut the waffle outa the top plexi and the metal guards on the 2 back fans. It really cut down on noise and between that and sleeving the PS (replaced all molex's wit uv blue) it really has cut down on temps. As I'm typing MM reads 29c for cpu. Full load on BF:V tho will pop it up to 38c-40c. I also got rid of the ccfl's and replaced em with 3 uv lazer leds (much easier to hide) and 1 blue lazer led to highlite the etch. It makes the case that much cleaner !!!

also how did you get the front bezel black

I was screwin around in Photoshop and musta flipped the pic wit out realizin it...lol

The fans I picked up from Xoxide tho SVC is a little cheaper. They just happened to be out when I went to buy em so I had to grab em from Xoxide. SVC is where I get alot of my extra's.

The case is a 436 case which they don't make anymore. I had the etch done at KoolPCMods. They do gr8 work. It looks more like the 424 case than the 11 case I think.

The front of the case came black with clear plastic bezel. Most of the time there's a reflection from the plastic but I musta got lucky when takin the pics this time. Other pics it's really noticeable and ya can't tell the color behind the bezel. When my brother got his rig he was lookin into this case but the bezel just didn't cut it for him. He hated the idea of any reflection so he got a Lian Li. I don't mind it tho. :D

XP1800,

How did you get hide all your PSU wires? I have like 4 separate cables with about 125 power connectors total coming from my Thermaltake. And every one of those m0f0s are visible in my side window. Can you post a pic showing how you "squirreled' them away?

If anyone else has a pic showing how they hid their power cables, I'd appreciate it.

I just got all the wires I didn't need, wrapped them up neatly, and stick them to the side of my case above my CD drives. My Lian-Li came with some plastic ties that stick to your case and hold wires, so I used them. It's really easy man, you just have to jam them up top somewhere, or you can sometimes route them behind your motherboard tray.

Yeah, I got a zip tie stick-on holder so I can rig some ties to pull them to top of case, but behind the mobo, that's something I didn't think of.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it once my vid card comes back from RMA (1.5 cheers for newegg.com). I love the PSU, but I gots me too many power cables for the few things I have in the case.

Thanks, yep I painted it all. I even hand painted those black lines at the bottom. I painted the rim of the faceplate silver and the middle section black as well. Then I painted the opticals.

And it's just a generic case. I cut out all the fan grills and have done some other small mods to it. Maybe i'll post some more of my desktop area above later. I actually made it this two tone color to match the Harley F-150 two tone truck. Gave me an inspiration :). Looks pretty good for a cheap case :D.

It seriously took me like 20 minutes with a dremel. I just stuck an 80mm fan grill on there, traced it out witha sharpie, and cut away. I drilled the holes first and made sure they were wide enough for the fans. It's definately worth it, you should do it.

I will. I am finally, finally getting around to modding a new case, a Lian Li PC65B. :)

I am also doing watercooling for some components, but I would still like to even out my airflow.

Btw, I have 80mm, 92mm, and 120mm holesaws. :) Makes it a bit quicker.

*Edit:

This is the last pic of a case I modded. It's for a server, so all the fans you see are Sunon 50cfm 40dbA ones. (Man, that thing is loud, but the server doesn't crash, at least not from heat, power outages are another story though...)

Here's my new system. Its taking a path from a GF2 Ultra to a 9700 Pro currently to a 6800 GT soon. That's why the video card power connector is a molex and not the floppy connector that the 9700 uses. I'll clean it up a bit more and post it with my desktop when I move it.

I tried to keep it clean, got the Vantec sleeving kit, made some custom power cables and attempted to route the cables well.

When I bought that case it cost over 200 dollars and I thought it was a good deal. 6 mobos 5 cpus and 5 graphic cards later I still think it was worth the money I spent. And I like having matched drives...

Nothing looks worse (IMHO) than mismatched colors in your drive bays.

Well... Seing as I've never posted pics of my PC on this thread. I'll point you guys to my recent case project thread:

http://www.sharkyforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=239483&perpage=15&pagenumber=2

The pics are still up to date except for the fact that the GF4-Ti4200 in the pics is now a 6800GT and I added a 2nd 120Gb Maxtor Plus9 SATA drive to it for the RAID-0 array.

Right now I'm having two probs with it though. My 400W Antec Smart Power PSU isn't giving enough juice to keep both my VC and my CPU O/Ced so I resorted to just O/Cing my CPU to 3.5Ghz and leaving my VC stock. To fix this I'll be buying a new OCZ 520W PowerStream PSU and have it sleaved in the same color scheme by FrozenCPU, I don't want to have to sleave all that again ;) Oh yeah, almost forgot, my UV kit's inverter burned out for some reason so I'll be ordering a replacement inverter for it when I order the PSU, I miss my UV goodness :(

First of all, how can you be doing 2 whole different things at once on 2 monitors wired to 1 computer?

Next, how much did the amp cost and how much did the headphones cost? Would it really be worth it? I mean, I spend hours a day on Vent and I rely heavily on my headset so I can talk, but I suppose if I'm just gaming or listening to music on an Audigy 2, it'd be pretty nice. :D

What exactly does the amp do? Does it JUST increase volume, or does it actually increase sound quality?

Well, my video card supports dual-monitors, so the second one acts as an extension to my desktop:)

Headphones = $150-$200
Cables = $100
Amp = $300

To me it's all totally worth it, but I'm a huge audiophile. Please don't get into audio, it's an expensive hobby and your wallet will never forgive you:)

Shoot over to the Headphones section if you have more questions, there is just too much information to tell you in this single post.

Oh and to answer your question on the PPA, this (http://elvencraft.com/ppa/) is a PPA:)

Xiode
10-26-2004, 11:38 PM
Holy crap! $100 in cables alone? WOW!

Right now I have my headset plugged in as default, but in the back if I change it, I have a splitter running to my speakers and my stereo, so that it comes out of both. It's not too bad, so I think until I get some money (I owe my mom $90, damn watercooling :p ) I'm good with what I have. :)

I don't know how I'm going to work it, but I'm probably going to ask for an Audigy 2 (should I get Audigy 2 or ZS?) another 74GB Raptor, a DVD burner, and a stack of 100 DVD's. ;) I might pay for some of it myself if I can manage to get the money before Christmas.

As for the dual monitors, what video card do you have, and would my 9800 Pro work? Also, you said that it's an extension of your desktop. Explain! Do you mean that all you can do is use your desktop on that monitor?

My desktop simply spills over onto that screen. When my mouse gets to the end of my left monitor, it does to the right:) It's logically one desktop, so I can drag certain apps over to the right one (like Foobar, Trillian, my convos etc...). The secondary monitor (on the right) just does have a taskbar on the bottom, it's just open real estate. And yeah, your 9800Pro supports it.

I like you dual monitor setup! Looking nice! I also currently have mine setup with dual monitors...one is a 19" and the other is a 17", though. I'm so tempted right now to buy another 19". Dah...too much money. ;)

Oh, and Xiode, unless you bought your 9800 pro oem it should have come with a cable that allows you to hook a second monitor in.

I did buy it OEM. :( If I remember correctly, it came with some cables though. If I can get a nice 17" or 19" LCD, I might try that dual monitor setup. :D What kind of cable do you have to have and where do you plug it in?

Yeah I'm gonna pick another one up soon. I usually have a towel on top of of the amp where they sit, since I'm always listening to them. The SR60's are getting sold soon to fund the 0404 purchase, so the Senns will have a home again:)

I was thinking of doing that originally, but it'll be better for me to upgrade my source first. I'll save the A500's for a christmas present or something:)

I also wish there was a 0404 card that would support us gamers better, then I could upgrade my source...but noooo, Creative has to have a monopoly on the gaming market

Actually, Creative makes the 0404, so if you did get one you know (or at least hope) that the A2 and 0404 would play nicely in the same machine:)

No I think the Logitech's are built into the charging station, that must be for something else. My heartrate monitor has something similar to that, but the front is red, not black.

Nice Prommy! I'm so jealous!

In reality, I could have easily afforded a Prommy with all the money I spent on all the parts to my "extreme watercooling" solution, but I didn't realize that at the time. :(

Just curious, is a Mach II or Mach I better?

JetForce Gemini X
11-27-2004, 08:08 PM
Mach II has a larger compressor and has a lot of other things such as lcds and a more flexible hose and it has maybe around 10C better temps than a mach 1. YOu can easily get a mach 1 modded for around $250 and it'll get around -60 to -50C loaded. I was planning to get my mach I modded but i dont know now since i kinda want klipsch ultras or a a64 setup

What does modding it do/accomplish?

JetForce Gemini X
11-27-2004, 11:47 PM
modding it allows you to get much lower temps and less variation between load and idel temperatures. btw you probably can't mod it yourself unelss you have experience in refrigeration since you'll have to vacum the R134A and then charge it with R404a or R507 and i tihnk you need a liscense for that
