Question about painting wood

hi all,

I want to paint my box that is in this (http://www.sharkyforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=147859) thread. But I don't want it to chip or wear or anything, plus i want it to have a little bit of a shine to it.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? What supplies i would need. I'd appreciate any help.

if you want to stick with the orriginal theme of the arcade then i would paint it black a then put on a clear coat to add some shine

unless i'm mistaken, you'll need some kind of weatherproofing agent (maybe not just clear-coat); you should probably ask someone at a local Home Depot or something.

Well if your gonna weather-proof it you might as well put siding on too..

I recommend vinyl.. much better than aluminum and doesn't dent..

use high gloss oil bassed paint with a new brush that has VERY soft bristles. that will give you a great sheen :)

Lol. That's actually an interesting idea. A tower house, with windows and a chimney...Maybe some balconys...

Edit: Klashe, just polyurethane it when you're done painting. They make spray poly, but make sure you do it outside lest ye want to get drain bamage..

Hi:

Mask it off and take it to an auto body shop and have them paint it for you. They can give you a good paint job that will lbe hare and last.

i think some people are confused it is wood not metal and if not painting it u could always just stain it

If you want it to look like the old arcade controllers then take it all apart, make sure the nails are countersunk and flled, sand it down, then prime it with a good wood primer like Kilz. You need to prime it well or the tar from the knots will eventually leech through. Then I would recommend using a good quality high gloss spray paint. Remember to do both the inside and the outside or you will have problems with wood movement opening the joints or warpage. If the gloss from the paint is not high enough for you one of the products like this (http://www.davispaint.com/images/gifs/PSpecial/2780_1ER.gif) well give you a "built-up" high gloss appearence.

You could also sand and then stain the box black and then apply floor varnish to it. I wouldn't use regular varnish since it will need to stand up to abuse similar to a floor. Hope that helps.
