C/C++ help......

Hey all....

well... i have been into computers for a while now, mostly gaming
but now i want to go into programming. I am trying to get into ITT TECH but for now i would like to learn at least the basics on C/C++
I have been all over the net, ive found many tutorials but i need the BASICS... i have tried to make sample codes work but i always get errors when compiling. Im also not sure what compiler and text-editor i should have. Im running win.XP, If anyone could help me or point me in the right direction i would appreciate it.
