I decided not to wait any long on 11a, so I got a cheap 11b setup and am fairly happy with it.

One think I have noticed though, is that XP doesn't provide enough detailed info on the connection. I would really like to know how well the link is working etc.

Any utilities out there which can help with this?

This handy little app will tell you what access points are within range, their signal strength, SSIDs, MAC addresses, WEP settings, and basically anything else you could possibly want to know:
