Food for thought about Doom3 and the Great Radeon 9700 Pro:
listen to this before you complain about Doom3 running slow on Radeon 9700s and Ti4600s:

r_mode 4 (800x600): timedemo activate_demo1
... 33.3fps

r_mode 7 (1280x1024): timedemo activate_demo1
... 31.3fps!

holy ****!!! no more complaining that the mighty Radeon 9700pro isnt up to the task of Doom3! No noticable difference between those vastly different resolutions! Now time to find the frame limiter and turn it off. time to see how it really stacks up.

Ok, now the real facts behind that statement:
CPU: Athlon 1600+ operating at 1.8ghz (342fsb)
512MB DDR (again, 342 MHz)
Radeon 9700pro (overclocked to 340/780)
"Medium Quality" .cfg used. This is the default for this alpha.
16x Performance Aniso, No AA.
All tests run in 32bpp color mode with all sliders in ATI OpenGL maxed out.

Ok, so my Rdeon is a bit overclocked and therefor not representative, but its still impresive. I almost shat myself when i was watching the demo at 1280x1024. No real noticable difference in frame rate! I only even went to r_mode 7 for shits and giggles, not expecting it to run well at all. Guess I was wrong here. Wonder what ramping up my CPU will do for it. One way to find out...

**edit:
Oh ya, one more thing. I had it configed to "r_usenv30 1"
I know, the 9700 is an R300, not even the same manufacturer. It was one of those "what the hell, why not see" things that I forgot to turn off cause it worked fine.

I just tried a timedemo with "r_usenv20 1", no noticable difference.
Also tried setting it to r_useStandardGL "1"...this looks awful! So bad I didnt even run a timedemo.

Maybe not afterall....

I just ran "timedemo activate_demo1" at 1280x1024 with 4xAA on....

It averaged about 15fps (judging from the fps display on the screen) but it still gave me a fps of 31.3. Now maybe I'm missing something here, but how can the average be 31.3 when it never got above 30fps in the first place?

Ok, so my first post just lost entire credibility since timedemo doesnt seem to work on this alpha.

But seriously, it ran OK (not good, just OK) in r_mode 7 (1280x1024) w/o AA on. The game is absolutely playble at r_mode 5 = 1024x768. I turned the maxfps to 120, but there seems to be a force VSynch flagged somewhere that havent been able to find yet, and the game hops between 60fps and 30fps in normal gameplay, and down to 20 for parts of the scripted sequences and 15 in that part with all the steam during the "I snell fear" sequence, which isnt bad at all for an alpha release that was never supposed to see the light of day.

If anyone can figure out how to make the timedemo work, or how to disable vsynch, let me know.

Who cares how it runs on an alpha version, wait until everything gets fixed and is ready to be played.

Im just saying, if it runs this well at such a early stage, then its gonna run like a champ when its done! Besides, this is the "UPCOMING games" forum, not "Finished Games"

Ok, since no one else is reading this thread, i'll continue making my progress reports for my own benifits:

Got VSynch disabled, now timedemo command is working properly Holy crap, this is way better than I ever imagined. Way better than my first post makes it sound. Here are my timedemo activate_demo1 times:

r_mode 3 62fps
r_mode 5 40fps
r_mode 7 32fps

Again, all in mediumquality with 32bpp. Only thing was I loaded those new ATI beta drivers for the 9700pro since the last benchies I ran, so that is a variable.

Wow.

It holds 30+fps in 1280x1024. I think the finished product will run just fine on today's "high end" systems. More importantly, I think this proves the 9700pro will have the power to man-handle Doom 3 when its done (I mean it just about can at this point anyway). With the rates we are seeing in the alpha, the final thing should be able to run perfectly smooth in no less that 1024x768.

Ok, I promise I wont post in this thread again until i get some feedback....How is the demo running for everyone else? Particularly Ti4600 owners, im curious. How is it holding up for you?

GF3 Ti-200 and running at ~20fps at all times (more when there's nothing going on and i'm staring at a wall ~45)

Alright Mr. Crazy hell-bent D3A benchmarker. :)

r_mode 3 = 59.2 fps
r_mode 5 = 38.3 fps
r_mode 7 = 26.1 fps

I also used a medium config and I believe it's 32bit color. That's all well and good, but my framerate still drops like a rock at certain times like shooting dead bodies with a machine gun to get the maximum amount of blood on the screen.

Think about this though ...

It may be fine now, and they could add a boat load of stuff and it would render our machines useless .... or they could optimize it and put to rest all the worries. I hope that latter happens. ;)

in regards to the DIII alpha:

Speculation = teh stupid

I think that its pretty freakin inane for anyone to draw any conclusion about this gaming considering that it pretty much was displayed that the core of the gfx engine was shown to run flawlessly on GF3.

I mean for all we know this Alpha build could be a completely tangental run that was designed to solely run on an SGI machines with workstation class GPU.

With a company like id there is no way to tell how far past this v0.02 they really are.

Well I dont think its going to run slower when its finished. I dont think that has ever been the case, but who knows. But damn it looks good already, I have no idea what to expect if its going to considerably improve!

Oh ya, I tried switchin to "highquality," with some interesting results. It does look noticably better, and it doesnt effect the framerate all that much at all. Only thing is that it takes a lot longer to load new textures (because the only difference is the texture compression used, or not used), so the hickups when doors open or when you move into a new section are much longer. It doesnt change the timedemos much though if you run it through once before so all the textures are already in memory.

If you dont want speculation, then why are you reading the "Upcoming games" forum...

Very good point. Most likely this demo was tailered to run well specifically on the demo machine. But the demo machine was not a workstation, it was a P4 sporting a Radeon 9700pro. And ATi was even the source of the leak, I hope this doesnt mean the end of cooperation between ATi and ID, that would suck if the next Doom4 (or maybe Heretic3) turned into an nFiniteFX required game.

Because people like to post Screen shots and links to real (games that are past Alpha or dont have leaked Alphas) games or E3 Trailers, all of which are information that is not speculation.

Plus we get our fair share of Beta Testers in here, I believe we had at least three authentic Beta testers for WC3 and about three dozen people that DLed betas off P2P connections. Betas are much less speculatory then Alphas are.

While Speculation is something that I cant avoid in an upcoming game forum, I am permitted to express my distaste for it whether you want to hear it or not (just as you are able to criticize me for visiting this forum)

Thank you for telling us that Isezumi, i didnt know that before you mentioned it ;)

One thing i tend to think some poeple do more often than they should is go out of their way to crap in threads basically saying that X game sucks, and you suck for playing it, totaly disregarding the concept of different people having different tastes. Now im not saying that the above poster did that, but ive been wanting to say that for a while and this post is close enough to it for it to not be totaly out of topic.

Or, they could optimize it *and* add in a boat load of stuff, in which case who knows how the hell it's going to run?

:D

Doomah, you should look into some better cooling methods.

Doomah, you should look into some better cooling methods.

Why's that? Although I haven't put on AS3 yet, my motherboard reads directly inside the core for that 60C temp. Everyone's true core temp is a lot higher than what most mobo's read. Is this more standardized for ya?

39/44C CPU
36/37C Ambient

:)

EDIT - But I don't overclock either, so ...

Any of you know where to locate the commands file for Doom 3 alpha?

I know this should go in cases and cooling but I wanted to reply. I have an msi kt3 ultra aru motherboard that reads directly from the cpu core & my temps right now are 39c cpu. Now my dig doc 5 is reading 43.8c for cpu but that uses a sensor that I have taped to the outside of the cpu. So for me the core temp is actually lower than the probe temp. We all know that the mother board core temp is the more accurate of the two. You know it's funny my mother board temps are exactly what you have posted above, cpu core 39c & case 36c. Of course with the exception that 36c is your ambient & it's my case temp. What mother board do you have doomah? I know when I got mine there wasn't but 2 boards that would read the cpu core. Also what kind of cooling do you have? Just curious.
