Im planning to buy a laptop so i can do my homework at work. I have a couple of questions. Whats the difference between Intel Mobile and the regular one? Will the regular Intel chips be as fast as a desktop with the same speed rating? I plan on using a software called Aliaswavefront Studio tools 10.0 (its simular to MAYA except it uses nurbs). The system in my sig runs it really nicely so what laptop speed should i get?

also, i stumbled upon WINBOOK.com, they've won many awards. Are they a good company? And one more thing, price is a concern.

thank u in advance...

well if your going to run something close to "maya" then you need a pretty good laptop , go with dell or ibm or winbook is good as well

but with the money ur going to spend on that laptop , you can build a 3Ghz machine !

hmm
okay ibms are very solid and good laptops..but most of them dont have a floppy, so watch out for that.
Toshiba is always on top of my list, model 2410 will be selling for around 1500 dollars before christmas, excellent buy. Toshibas are solid and most people will give u good feedback on them.

If you are gonna be carrying it all the time then weight is factor too, compaq's presario serios with amd chips is very light, 5 something lbs, its got a nice 15" screen and good memmory 512 meg DDr, models i 915US i think.
Okay lotta vendors are using desktop chips in laptops these days, just coz they are cheaper. advantages"1. customer gets a great price for value"
disadvantages"
1. laptop becomes heavier.
2. goes case to case but some have a heating problem with desktop chips in em.
3. doesnt have a speed step in them which gives u extended battery life by switching down to a lower mode when u r not using the full potential of the notebook(a mobile processor has that)"

I know for sure and have tried some DELL and Toshiba notebooks with desktop chips in them, and they were alot better than i expected, no heating problem and battery life was around 3 hrs.

hope this helps

well there is a prob. athlon laptops run at full speed almost all the time but run really hot. pentium laptops run at half speed whenever its running on battery and after a certain amount of inactivity, but run pretty cool. so its a tradeoff...

Usually there is software that allows the Pentium to run at full speed even on battery mode.

Mobile Pentiums support Speedstep, that's the feature that allows them to clock down when running on battery power. You can usually specify in the BIOS whether or not you want them to use Speedstep.
