I was wondering if the whine means something bad?

I got a IBM 80Gig 7200rpm hdd but the whine is lounder than my fans and i got 9 fans in total. 6 case fans, cpu fan, blowhole, and VD fan.

If it starts making "clicks of death" then you have a problem.

What family does it belong to on this list?

Have you always had this high whine from that hard drive?? My IBM 60GB has a high whine but it's not so loud that it's disturbing. I can hear it power up and down everytime I turn the computer on and off.

thanks for the replies

it is this one IC35L080AVVA07 82.34 GB ATA/100 7200 RPM.

The whine is quite noticable, at first i thought it was just my delta cpu fan, but i changed that to a quieter fan and the noice is still there, mind you it isn't as loud, but it is still there whining away.

It's part of the 120GXP family. That's good news. At least it doesn't belong to the infamous 60GXP or 75GXP family.:D

That's what most high-speed 7200RPM HDDs are going to do. Some drives don't whine, such as recent-model Seagates, but their drives are slower than the competition, too.

(Personally, I think the slight loss in speed is worth it.)

Yeah Deathstars suck , expecially when it comes to noise. I have a 120GXP in my second system (that has like 8 case fans :p ) and a 15000 rpm Seagate cheetah in my main system. When both rigs are on I can hear the ibm (yeah a freaking 7200 rpm ide drive) over the Seagate.

***!!! lol

heh, guess what, the new Seagate ide drives are catching up. The Barracuda 7200.7 w/ 8mb cache is pretty much even w/ a wd special edition (maybe slightly slower in some benchmarks), not only that but the write performance is supposed to be much better than other drives too. And this thing is only slightly louder than a barracuda 4. I can stand the loud fan sound, but when it comes to hard drives, god I hate a high pitched hard drive!
