When you turn off your computer in Winxp, you know that sound that your HDD makes?

Well sometimes when I'm just surfing, I occasionally hear that noise. It didn't do that before, but it's a little disturbing considering I'm not even shutting down. Anyone else experience this "hdd shutdown" noise when the PC is ON?

I have an WDSE 80GIG and an IBM 180GXP 60gig.

Yes... I have the same exact WD drive as yourself and I get this sound randomly while using my PC...

I don't know if this is normal for this drive or I just got a noisy drive or perhaps the drive may be failing... :(

I ran the WD Diagnostic software and it passed everything and I even did a low-level format to it and I still get these sounds...

I only noticed this sound when I got my IBM hdd back from RMA (new 160GXP) and installed it. It's kinda hard to tell which HDD the sound is coming from because the sound is very infrequent.

I seem to have eliminated the noise by removing the secondary 30.7GB WD slave drive...

Since I removed the power from the secondary drive, I have yet to hear that sound while using my comp other than boot and shutdown...

So I don't know what the problem could be, it could be the secondary doing the noise... Or it could be the primary for some odd reason...

Well I do not think much is wrong with the HDD, but I would just make sure that you have a backup of the important stuff just in case.

i get that sound during shutdown (if you mean that click followed by the "decompression" sound), but not yet while doing other things. could it be your power management settings?

I found a workaround, even though it's pretty lame... If i disconnect the power from my secondary drive which is also a WD then I don't ever get that sound...

So I figure it's not my main drive failing...

I also did a low level format to my secondary where it writes zeros but the sound remains... It's very random but it's still there...

try to see if you disconnect the power from the secondary it stops the sound...

I'm really baffled as to why this happens... maybe lack of power or something... I just hope some day it doesn't fail and i lose all my files..

Maybe I'll try that, even though I use the secondary HDD all the time.;) It didn't make this sound before when I had the "old" IBM installed with the WD. It's only when I installed the "new" IBM hdd.

Yeah I use my secondary all the time too...

I'm going to just live with the sound I guess...

update...

I appear to have fixed the weird sound... I was suggested on another forum to try another IDE cable...

I found a rounded IDE cable lying around and installed it and no sound now... Comp has been going for a long time now... over 12 hours and no clicks... :p

Welp been over 24 hours and no sound yet... Unless I missed it while sleeping or gaming or something... :p

Just saying give it a shot... It may be a bad IDE cable... The funny part is that it was the one that came with my motherboard brand new and i switched from my original rounded generic cable that I bought long ago...

I did go through a bunch of trouble shooting though... I changed the jumpers on both drives to cable select... I checked the cables and power cables to make sure they were attached right... I used diagnostic programs on both drives and even wrote zeros (low level format) to both drives... This was just my last hope.. :D

Grrrr

I heard it again after like 2 days of not hearing it...

At least now it's not as frequent but it's still there...

Guess I'll live with it and hope my drives don't die... :D
