Operation: Integration Alumicoat..phase I
Finally.. plans for Integration Alumicoat have been aproved! (by me, web56n)
In the proceeding weeks I will be performing this extreme mod,
with step by step collaboration of details and pictures.
consisting of a completely modded pc work station.
Phase I - Design
this operation will consist of having the entire work station integraded, which will include completely custom built desk that will become the pc's case.
along with a semi-stealthed keyboard and mouse, a stealthed webcam that will be built into lcd monitor and will be remotely controlled from keyboard tray.
Desk top
desk top will be fabricated from 0.040" brushed aluminum, it will include a splat window for viewing purposes, directly in front of monitor.
here is a drawing of top view of desk top
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/New%20Folder/new%20desk1.jpg
also a pic of raw materials
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/1raw.JPG
0.040" brushed aluminum.
here is a drawing of top view of desk top showing pc and drives
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/New%20Folder/new%20top%20drives.GIF
also a drawing of FRONT view showing where drives open and close and are mounted flush with edge of desk top
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/New%20Folder/new%20pic%20drives.JPG
Mods underway...
keyboard tray
I completely covered the aluminuim with masking tape to avoid any unwanted scraches,
I then layed out where keys are, notice no number pad I choose not to include them.
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/4frane.JPG
here are pics of keyboard frame
the frame is made from 1"x1" acrylic, which sits along the outer edge of keyboards tray.
here's pic of frame. the ends were glued together on a 45* angle.
keyboard or whats left of it sits in cavity of frame and brushed aluminuim is on top acting as a lid.
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/2frame.JPG
I've drilled holes at either end to install highpower blue leds which will light up the entire frame

yes this project was months in the making just for the design, I've hopefuly thought of everything, right down to getting a few of the same keyboards just in case. but to answer your question yes it is easily dismantled if need be...
here shows a pic of each hole in the keyboard tray bezal, filed and sanded.
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/7%20bezel.JPG
also keyboard tray bezal finished and ready for esembling.
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/8bezr.JPG
more pics of tray esembled.
I've chosen to use satin finish aluminum for the edges it has a groove so the acrylic had to have a notch to match
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/5trim.JPG
I put a slice along the edge of the 1" acrylic 7/16" deep to fit the aluminum edging. it slides on with little effort. (press fit)
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/6trim.JPG
this is what it looks like, tray is emty and ready to be wired up with keys,
leds,and sliders
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/10tray.JPG
why no number pad? because all the time I've been using a comp I haven't yet used them. I guess I'm used to the one's above letters.
also here's a quick pic of what bottom will look like

here is pic of molded clear silicon, 1/8"x6"x13" this is how I made the keys to soft touch! yeah, just like elevator buttons
this goes right on top of electronic keyboard pad, instead of any keys or all the little rubber caps, this not only made the keyboard soft touch but it also let me light up all the keys..by placing 4 blue led's around the outsides.
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/9%20soft.JPG

Phase II mods underway!
here are pics of front edge of desktop were cd-rw and dvd drives will be located, this piece will sit right in front of keyboard.
here's pics of front bezel...
starting with layout,
holes were drilled and again dremel and files were needed.
it looks like this, not quit finished but you get the picture!
this will show you the overall look of front, with drives stealthed,
this also will have power and reboot buttons along with 4- on/off switches for fans. (they all glow in the dark)
the area that is not aluminum is mirrored acrylic and will be back lit with blue led's,
I will be installing them at a later time!
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/front%20bezelwork.JPG
this piece is 80" long and will go along front edge of desk top (one piece)
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/front%20bezel.JPG
here is also close up of switches,
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/close%20up.JPG
I will be starting desktop layout and cutting out window next,
once all pieces are ready then I will be assembling it all together

BTW, what sort of tools are you using?
knuckles644
07-12-2003, 02:30 AM
From the look of the cuts and the starting holes, I think he's using a jig saw on the window. For the smaller stuff a dremel...
How much is this costing you? Raw materials about $150-200?

Hey, it's a win-win situation. He steals your money from your bank, he gets away with it, the money in the bank is insured by the federal government and you get 100% of your money back! What a dastardly plan. :p

ok... these are just construction pics
first off I wanted to lose the monitor base...so it can be placed somewhere else,
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/monitor%20base.JPG
I extended the small power cord with a 6ft. extention cable.
this is what it looks like without base.
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/monitor1.JPG
I've chosen to use 2" aluminum pipe (which still needs to be polished) to house all wires and cables that come from monitor making sure that they all fit. I also just drilled two small holes to match the holes on back of monitor to fasten pipe giving me the same adjustment as before.
I then layed out and cut hole for pipe that will go through desk top, at ther ear of splat window.
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/construction2.JPG
still lots of work to do on monitor and desk.
will post soon
this gives you an idea of what it will all look like.

the molding is made from blue clothes line wire.
once cut down the side I pulled out wire leaving a nice C shaped molding that can be simply pushed onto edge of cut out.
as for how far away is monitor!
if you sit directly in front of keyboard, the monitor is approx. 22" away. sounds like it's far but it's not.
size specs?
do you mean overall size or do you mean what kind of cpu and such?
if you mean size it shows all that in the first few drawings.
and if you mean cpu and such, well that will be reviled when I'm complete!

got pic problem solved ........
here is a pic of monitor bezel notice the hole in the top center
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/new%20bezel.JPG
I have cut a piece of acrylic and tinted it to match the front of monitor.
for a few reasons,
1-to cut down on reflection at night.
2-so when the monitor is shut off it appears to be silver.
3-and most important, to keep little fingers off the soft surface of monitor
(kids are always pointing at something on the monitor)
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/tinted%20acrylic.JPG
this what it looks like with tinted acrylic in place
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/monitor%20bezel.JPG

Operation: Integration Alumicoat, has to have a modded chair so here's a few pics
the chair from a 1990' pontiac, has arm rests on both sides.
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/the%20chair1.JPG
as you can see the right side arm rest has a stealthed fold out beverage holder along with a compartment for cd's.
both sides fold up out of the way for easy access, it also has been wired for 5.1 dolby digital! you can also see there is a lever to recline the chair if it's just relaxing time yeah it fully reclines too!
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/the%20chair.JPG
the speakers are mounted from under the head rest so if head rest goes up so do the speakers, they are also fully adjustable to any position.
here you can see a handy little compartment on the back for important what ever's.....

will be posting the finishing touches of Operation: Integration Alumicoat very soon........

Few more questions to a KickA$$ Project.
How did you run the Wires for the speakers to the chair?
Is the webcam Adjustable or would you need to turn the monitor?
When your done with this project, what will you MOD next??

first off the speakers wires run through inside chair and exit at bottom, they are then hooked up to a remote center for speakers via
RCA jacks. the remote center is then connected to computer using a digital optical cable.
the webcam is remotely controlled by using a 4-way power mirror essembly from a car, I have yet mounted the switch.

I looked high and low for a silver/ gray leather seat but I desided on a silver/gray cloth one instead, just because the one's I did find were all 60/40 split seats and that wouldn't have looked good at all.

That is very very nice. Are you getting deals or sponsorships from hardware companies specifically for this computer?
Can you show us the cd drives up close? Those look pretty good too. Also, I'm worried about the speakers on that chair. I guess you could turn the volume down on them but otherwise your ears will nearly be touching the speakers. I know those ones can be really loud too. Still a very sick setup.

I don't have pics of that at this time,
but I will explain how I did it and how it works.
the power mirrors from a cadillac was used.
there are four cables coming from a four disc motor each cable was attached to back of webcam, sort of like north south west east.
the switch powers the cable movement, each time a direction was pushed it would rotate a disc on the motor and that would move cable which would move webcam.
sorry hard to follow without pics.
it is all connected to a spare power supply.
the motor draws less than 3 amps unless left on for a long period of time or button held down for a long time.
I installed a inline fusable link using a 3 apm fuse to aviod any blow ups.
the only problem I found was that from where the webcam is located there is very little movement needed to change screen shot of webcam, so switch is very touchy.

Plus his advice is usually inaccurate and false...
But whatever :D
I like a lot of things :)
But since I am a Cancer I am VERY picky! :D
Yea, Leo LaPorte is not the person I would have chosen to host that show... it seems like he has read alot on the subject, but when it comes to really understanding the subject you have to get a hands on approach.

I dont mean to go offtopic :(
But he did have one of the new Alienware laptops that support an interchangable ATI 9600 or nVida 5600 video card... I think the idea is awesome.. But it weighs a ton... Over 10lbs!!!!
However I watched him show the laptop then closes the lid and flips it over and remove all the screws... I think one of the stage hands told him that he should power it off before he yanks out that card and fry the puppy....
So I would be careful around him...
I really liked CNET on TV... Oh well...
But keep us posted when you will air :)

Nice, but I think that reboot button is a bad idea. I know if my roommates saw that my computer wouldn't be on for more than 10 minutes :o

I don't think you realize all the effort and planning that went into that mod. I think few people could have done it so well, I know I couldn't.
Also, this thread has been finished for over six months, just leave it be unless you have something important to say.

Excuse me but web56n put in alot of work on this project and to bring it up after all this time to give your rating wasn't required.
I don't mind you giving your opinion on someones MOD but you shouldn't comment on what others think of the same MOD. "you ppl are exaggerate too much"
Some friendly advice, if you don't have nothing constructive or positive to add then don't add nothing at all. Putting down other folks hard work isn't to cool.
Here was another example of your lameness which I let go because you came back to say "wot i mean is.. its luks good.."

I don't get the big deal about those pyramid things. I mean, they couldn't be that hard to build since they're just a bunch of rocks, right?

Damn, too bad I missed out on this while it was in progress. :( That has to be the most large-scale computer mod I've ever seen, and done with such perfection... Wow.
while this is back up, I'll congradulate again. This mod is 100% amazing. The only thing I woulnd't like to have is the keyboard, the keys seem kinda hard to hit, especially for a fast typer like me.

yeah. this was, imho, one of the best and most comprehensive computer mods i've ever seen. WAY cooler than that silly doom3 mod.
