I know IBM HDDs are well known for their high failure rates, but as I was looking through newegg, I came across this 120GB HDD (click here to see (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=IC35L120AVV207%2D1) ). As you can see from the customer reviews, this drive seems to perform pretty well. Since I'm looking to get a new HDD, I've taken this one into concideration and I was wondering if there are any people out there who recently purchased an IBM/Hitachi HDD. If so, how are they holding up? Thanks.

I actually have a 60GB 60GXP IBM hard drive that's over a year old and still running strong.

um yeah, isn't that like your thrid one after sending it back for rma 2 times because of the last 2 dieing?
stay the hell away from ibm, I don't care how well they perform. Because eventually, a more reliable drive (which was slower in a few benchmarks) will outperform that pos because that pos will DIE!!!!!!!!!!!

i own this exact drive, and i must say i am super happy with it so far. not only does it perform extremely well, but its whisper quiet. the 60gxp/75gxp days are long gone here folks. even storagereviews user reliability ratings of the 120gxp exceed that of western digital drives. for years and years IBM hard drives were the best money you could buy. they stumbled with the 60/75gxp lines and they have come back full force.
to answer your question, this drive is fantastic. better than the WD special editions, and i promise you will not have any reliability issues with it.

I have installed over 300 IBM drives (60GXP and 75GXP) and I had 1 drive that failed.. It was my drive that sat on the shelf for a few months *lol*
I dont agree that they are a high failure rate... I also own personally about 15 120GXP and they are faster then any other drive I own... Well maybe not as fast as the 200GB WD SE drives... But much faster then my 120GB WD SE drives...
But not everyone have the same experience as I do with the 60/75GXP

I have a 75GXP in another comp and it's been running strong ever since I got it when they first came out. 24/7 operation too.:)
I guess I got lucky.:)

ive owned 3, 2 75s and 1 60. one of the 75s failed after almost 3 years, but that was to be expected. ibm fixed it and its been running strong since.

the 120s are that bad, but they are too loud. I run a pair of 120, a WD special, a 15K chetah, and many many Barracuda drives. The IBMs are by far the loudest ones (louder that the 15K drive too  and that is sad.

my 180gxp is the quietest ide drive i have ever heard.

Heh......I had a 45GB 75GXP last for a year and like 4 months. After that one died, I got a 60GB 60GXP that only lasted 3 1/2 months! Stupidass thing. I kinda want this 60GB to die now so I can get a new one before my 3 year warranty with gateway is up.

that is just freaking sad! I expect even an ide drive to make it to it's 3rd birthday! 5th would be super nice.

I dont know what kind of crack you are smoking pudad... But my 120GXP are quieter then any other drive I own!!!
You probably just got a bum drive...
And the 120GXP have a better rating then the WD SE!!!

hmm that is strange, because a lot of people say that, but I have 2 of these drives and they are both loud as hell. my theory on why the 120gxp is rated highly is because no as many people buy ibm because of their last batch of horrible drives, but I am probably wrong on that one. But yeah, 2 drives, they are not quiet. Doubt I'd get 2 bum drives, maybe one, but 2, yeah f%^k ibm. but you may be right about them both being "bum" drives, I think I'm going to rma them and ask for some freaking seagates, this is not tlerable.
model: IC35L040AVVA07-0
maybe mine are a different version or something.
and they are louder than the 6 case fans I have in the box w/ these 2 drive. really high pitch too.
edit: I noticed you tried to pm me some time ago, what was that all about, (I rarely check the email that this forum sends to)?

You think I remember that long ago???? :D
However it might just be bum drives... Is the sound from the spindle or the heads?
I can tell you from first hand experience that the 15 or so IBM drives I own at home are all quiet...
I remember one of my older 60GXP having a odd beep once every few days to my knowledge... But the drive never failed... And it has been doing that for about 2 years now...
I don’t know what to tell you.. But my 200GB and 120GB WD SE drives are louder when spinning up from a cold boot. And when defrag the drive, the WD SE seems to be louder... But I need to disable my case fans to hear it constantly.. Otherwise its a lower underlying sound.

hmm, yeah this 80GB WD special is a lot wuieter, I think it is the spindle noise, happenes when it is spinning up and it is the idle noise. btw, this looks like a productive conversation, you are off the ignore list buddy ;)

Ohhh I am off the ignores?
But you are still on mine... Lets see if it can stay civil!!!
Now what really sucks is that I think one of my 200GB WD SE is failing already.. Its not even what 2 months old? Maybe 3?
My choices for HDD is limited :( I dont like Maxtor... Crappy 1 year warranty... I dont like Seagate...
I wanted some 180GXP but I dont like Hitachi.. I guess I always hated my Thinkpad 600e HDD... (which was a hitachi!)
So now I am SOL... I guess I can move back to Seagate Cheetahs.. AS long as I dont get a crappy box load of them again!!!!

Oh well, don't ever say I didn't try, I am willing to put past diferences behind. Because that is just stupid, and you seem to be reading my posts anyways, so wtff?
Yeah, get cheetahs, they are the best you can get.

Sometimes the curiosity gets the best of me...
But, I did go with cheetahs before.. I had so many that failed within a few months that it just sucked! I sold the rest of them off and never used them again in any server built since then...
It just pissed me off.. I have had decent luck with Cheetahs before.. I had some fail before.. Like all drives... And well before 5 years of use :D
I replaced so many Seagate Barracuda and Cheetahs in my NSE role in the private sector that its not even funny!

how long did it take for them to die? I have had my B4 for a year, it is fine, we will see. But Seagate seem to have the best reputation for staying alive so I went with that.

Dont get to full of youself :D :D
However the Seagate drives I bought last year were died within 3 months of use... Some died 2 weeks later... I was very disappointed!
Most of the Barracuda drives I had replaced in the past were older drives.. Probably around 3 years old or so...
I guess I am glad that I own a DLT tape drive and I keep my backup current... I would hate to lose my financial data or any other important data..

yeah, that would be really bad. my dad has a tape drives hooked up @ his work for that stuff. I just manually mirror my stuff over my 3 disks (15K.3, Barracuda 4 and Barracuda 7200.7, also the WDSE in the old P2 box). The media and stuff (mp3s, divx) only gets mirrored onces, but code, school work, and tutorials [example: this awesome pdf about big O I found] get mirros on everything.

simplistic definition: way of showing the efficiency of an algorythm.
example:
O(1): programmer's wet dream, any operation take the same ammount of time.
a sequantial search is O(n) (seraches every element in an array or list until it find the desired element).
a binary search is O(log(n)) goes through an array through a sorted array and eliminates half of the array of undesiables
merge sort is O(nlog(n)) (a pretty efficient sorting algorhythm)

no more Big Blue for me
I've sent back no less than FOUR IBM drives due to failure... 2 were mine and 2 were from a friend of mine's whose computer I built.
And now 2 of the replacement drives have gone bad as well.
I'm on Western Digital now and NO problems whatsoever... no more IBM for me.

Heh, then your first wd dies and you go Seagate (j/k, no problems here w/ wd, but I only own one 80gb se).

I have also never had any issues with IBM, owned a 60GXP never any problems. Now I have a 180GXP still no problems, very fast and quiet. On the other hand, I have had 3 Maxtor Drives fail on me and will never buy Maxtor ever again.

recent article in Maximum PC about IBM getting sued up the wazzoo because they knowingly shipped out drives that had as high as a 17 percent failure rate!!
wonder if it's Hitachi's headache now...
