Best way t o partition

When you guys partition your drives, do you make one strictly for the OS, and then the other for your proggies, drivers, MP3's, etc...

I'm a little confused since I'm sick of backing stuff up, I want to be able to reformat only one partition and keep my other files on the other.

I don't see why you would bother making multiple partitions unless you have to format alot and want to keep data on the partition and the OS on the other...

Naw man you always want at least 2 different partitions. It all depends on the size of your HDD though. I just reformatted last night since my computer was all jacked up, and I made my 1 main partition with Windows on it 10GB. I just made another partition the rest of the HDD which was 40GB. So I have like a 10GB Windows drive, a 27GB Data/Games drive, and another seperate physical HDD which is strictly music and other goods. :cool: The more the better, because reformatting and even partitioning huge drives is a pain. It just saves time and effort partitioning stuff up. :)

it also has to do with what filesystems you want to use for what.

I always have a small partition, like 4-5Gb for my OS and then a larger partition for everything else. It makes formatting easier if windows gets hosed or something. Multiple partitions make your HDD easier to manage.

Come on ya'all, you know that setting up a separate partition for the OS so it can be reinstalled is a myth. Nearly all progs, etc require Registry entries which get wiped out with the reinstall.

That's why you backup the registry once you've got the comp setup the way you want it. ;)

Also, if you use ghost, you need 2 partitions.

the registry gets wiped out, but with the programs on another partition it makes it easier to reinstall them. you can just go down the folders one by one (or as needed) and reinstall each prog with all the settings usually restored, like motherboard monitor, etc. which are a PITA to have to reset.

My Windows partition has all my programs on it. I have an EXE database and ZIP database on my DATA drive where all my programs are ready to go. All the stuff goes in there; Sandra, Nero, AIM, Powerstrip, etc. Every utility, program whatever goes in there. Then, when I do a fresh install it all goes in brand new, a fresh start. Like I said I reformatted the other day and it took less than 2 hours to get everything back to normal, which in the summertime is nothing. :cool: I am getting better at reformatting and stuff, and it is sort of like a game to me now to see how fast I can get everything back up and running. I am always trying to see which how little time it takes. :cool: So, in short it is not a myth. ;)

OMG, I hate partitioning and formatting. I'm like a noob when it comes to this stuff. Too bad I have to reformat this week.:(
