Which do you think is best out of these 2 HDD's?

I currently have 1x20gb WD Protege and 1x20gb Fireball on the same channel, and to speed things up a bit plan to buy either :-

"Western Digital Cavier SE 80Gb 7200rpm 8mb Cache Hard Drive OEM @ £65.36"

OR

"Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80Gb 7200rpm 8mb Cache ATA133 Hard Drive OEM @ £64.92"

I'm not sure which one, both are almost exact same price apart from a few pence and they both seem to be of similar spec. Do you think it's worth me upgrading for the performance increase I would gain? (spec in sig, as usual)

Try te Seagate 7200.7, is preforms just the same as the WD and Maxtors out there, and Seagates have a better rep for reliability.

the 7200.7 doesnt perform quite as well... personally i wondnt go with any of them. the ibm/hitachi 180gxp w/8meg cache is one of the quetist, best performing hard drives i have ever used. but just get the cheapest one.

in most benches the difference is negligible, and in some the 7200.7 is a lot faster.


and how dare you recommend a pos ibm, those are the wprst disks on the market imo. The ibms are a little faster than the rest (180gxp)_ from what I remember, but I would never take another chance w/ those poses. Also, I don't know how bad the 180 is but the 120gxp is freaking LOUD. The IBMs are the last disks in the WORLD I would recommend.

Get Western Digital or Seagate. Maxtor I can't comment on, but I have heard some crappy stuff about their newer drives (all I know is the d740x drives were awesome).

Both companies are troopers. The answer is difficult.

Like someone else mentioned the Maxtor D740X was a great HD. I would recommend checking which one can hold more data per platter and that is probably the more faster one. If they're both the same then you're in a pickle.

I would recommend the Maxtor HD for your rig because your mobo can take advantage of the ATA133.
I understand that the boost from ATA100 to 133 is very like, like 3-6% but hey it's something.

Both comanies have under 1% deffective rate on their HDs according to them. So reliability on the HD not breaking down on you is pretty much the same.
Both are OEM, so the warranty is the same for both....

Maxtor vote here because:

I've personally had more WD hds break down on me than maxtor, but like I said earlier, the HD breaking down is relatively the same for both companies. You will find other people with more maxtor HDs breaking down than HD.

A tie, but because of the above reason I lean towards the Maxtor HD.

The extra £20 for the 120GB drive isn't worth my while realy, I would never use it, therefore an 80GB is plenty for my usage. I have seen a similar 40GB version of the Western Digital, which is cheaper, but of course it is a lot more money per GB. I will just have to see how much money I have at the point of purchase.

Well whatever you choose ... but one rule of computers is you can never have too much storage space. I never thought I could fill an 80gig hard drive, time proved me wrong ... now my 120gig sits with 2/3 full and I'm debating moving up to 200gig for my new system.

I have 2 Maxtor 740's.. they have been operating 16m hours a day for 1 year and are still very quiet and working fine.. And when I did drop and break one of my new 740's, I RMA'd it as any honest decent person would and claimed that it was their workmanship at fault.... they replaced it no questions asked...

So I like Maxtor.

I didn't realise they had reliability issues with other drives?
