I was ordering some mesh cable wrap from SVC today when an idea struck me for my T-Bird. I was planning on turning this system over to my g/f (she's using my Cyrix 350 right now :( ), and I noticed some UV reactive PINK cable wrap. Alas, pink being her absolutely favorite color, I decided to not only give her this computer, but seriously beautify it beforehand :)
So, I dropped ~$30 on a UV light, UV reactive pink cable loom, UV reactive floppy and ATA cables, and a UV reactive red-LED 80mm.
The next step is to find some pink spray-paint and some glitter gloss. I can probably find some pink paint locally, but where can I find some glitter clear coat?
I want to seriously chic-*** this computer. Any other suggestions welcome :D

Cut out a side panel window in the shape of a heart.:)

:) That was actually my original plan, but she isn't too keen on the heart thing... she would rather have a star. If I can figure out how to get the edge guards to cooperate with the sharp corners I'll be doing that I guess. Maybe I'll round them out a little then.

I take that back, we decided a heart would make much more sense for a pink comp plus it will be easier :)

Cut out a heart-shaped blow-hole:D Ummm, replace all of your LED's with pink or purple ones, and stealth the optical dives in pink:D

Hey now, I didn't say anything about hello kitty..
I'm having an impossible time finding pink spray paint though. Looked at home depot, wal-mart, a few crafts stores, etc. to no avail. We need fuscia, like hot pink, not pepto bismol pink or fluorescents... any ideas on where to order cheap spray paint on-line? I need the pink and also a glitter clear coat.
I'm thinking about doing something funky with the window too. I'd like to take two pieces of plexiglass and separate them by about 1mm, seal the edges, and pump sparkly UV-reactive water between them. Where can I find a good, really cheap and small water pump? Also do you think fine glitter will eventually ruin a water pump?

Have you tried auto part stores, I don`t know if there are any cars with pink factory paint jobs but they usually carry touch up paint for a lot of car colors. Worth a try. I did find this online store that has hot pink spray paint, don`t know nothing about them www.cpostores.com/247equip/browse.cfm/2,78.html

i would think if you've got a good hobby shop around there you should be able to get some bright pink paint....it's probably gonna be enamel (which isn't really a bad thing, it's more durable, just takes longer to dry) and be in tiny cans, but they should have it....there's a hobby shop near here that has more Testors enamel sprays than i ever though possible...

I don't blame you in trying to find pink spraypaint. It's HARD, and I need to find some for a friend of mine's next rig :(
Making it cute is very hard. There's an incredibly fine line between cute and silly/tacky, so tread lightly in you're work.

I thought that too.. I used to make a lot of models and there are crazy colors. But I could only find 3oz. cans for $2 something.. Not that much, but I don't know how far 3oz. is going to go. I'm doing a semi-big case, monitor and keyboard (unless I can find a flexible translucent pink kb :)). Oh and I made a fanbus this afternoon which I'll have to paint. I have a feeling it'll start to add up quick

Hehe, I agree, I'm trying to be really careful picking this stuff out. Just being pink increases it's silliness potential by atleast 35%. :(
I found what looks like the right color right here (http://www.steps-to-memories.com/paint-supplies.html) (raspberry). Except it's $7/can with 10-21 day shipping! I think I'll keep looking...
Ooh, and I might color the inside and some of the components with this stuff (http://www.directron.com/clearneonco.html). (pink, obviously ;))
hey tekime,
pinks not exactly the color i'd pick..but i think you've got an awesome idea going there...btw...you can pick up some "flower" fan grills at http://www.recom.nl/recomdesignfanguards_en.htm
btw...they have cannabis grills too...but i don't know if your girl would like that..or if it would fit into the "cute" theme...maybe with a pink led fan...:D

Lol... she might get a kick out of the cannabis grills but I don't know if it fits the theme :D The flower one might be cool though :) I just got a bunch of pink loom cable wrap, UV light, and LED UV fan last night. Still need to find pink paint though
Also got a sweet 120mm YSTech 130CFM... but that's ALL MINE! :)

Well I haven't thought much about names but I finally got the right sized FLEXO and some more heatshrink and got the PSU sleeved. Disassembled comp last night and will start in on cutting very soon. I don't have a ton of free time but I'll work on it as often as I can.
Here's a few pics of the sleeving job and the case in question. Will also be painting monitor, kb, mouse.

hi, if you are going to do the water and glitter between two pieces of acrylic.
for your computers sake and your use
weld-on (http://www.ellsworthadhesives.com/Catalog/Weldon.pdf)to glue the actylic I don't know if you have ever glued acrylic before but if you want a solid bond that's water proof then that's how and only how your going to get it.
but a little trick for the bubbles in the side of your water capsule,
fill the capsule with tonic water, add some glitter, and put a few small raisins at the bottom of window, then seal it completely.
right before your eyes you'll have glitter dancing around the window for ever as long it is completely sealed.
the raisins and the tonic water react with bubbles and the added glitter just adds to the effect.
also for your glitter problem just get clear acrylic paint and use
cieling glitter, sprincle the glitter at case while spraying the clear.
the clear coat will act as aglue to hold glitter on the case them you can put more coats over top for depth if needed.

I'll check out the WELD-ON, I've been wondering what the best stuff would be for gluing plexi (never done it before). That raisins idea sounds cool! I don't know if I want raisins rotting away int he case though, will it really bubble forever? Very cool :)
Oh, and I finally did break down and bought some very fine glitter and clear gloss. I might try to sand in between coats, as my only problem with this method is having a bumpy finish - I want it nice and smooth.
Oh, and I picked up a bunch of pink paint too. Finally gave up and just bought a bunch of cans of the 3oz. stuff :(

ok if you decide to go with the water pocket window, what ever you do DON'T use silicon, go with the weld-on and make sure that when you buy the acrylic/plexi you buy the same for the glue.
it's a little confusing, but one weld-on glue will work for acrylic and another will work for plexi.
MAKE sure you get the right combo,
and yes the raisin thing, they won't rot if it's completely sealed.
they may not bubble forever but for a very long time,

Thanks TAZTG! It could have been a tad better, some of the heatshrink I used was too short. I can only find the right size in a combo pack, and there is only one tube I need in the pack. So it's like $3 for 6" of heatshrink :( If you can find the heatshrink it's really not that hard at all. I was expecting a big mess but it went pretty smooth.
Thanks also for the additional info web56n, I'll be sure to get the right combo.
Know anywhere good to order weld-on for cheap? I'll have to check what kind of plexi I have.
web56n
08-07-2003, 04:27 PM
most local glass shops should know if they don't have it.
the best bet is to buy the weld-on glue and plexi from the same place, so when you do this and the glue cracks the plexi cause they gave you the wrong kind you can freak out on them for destroying your rig.
hopefuly that never happens, but if you get the glue from one place and the plexi from another and you don't have the right combo, yikes
don't mean to discourage you on this but it is very important.

I'm interested to see what it looks like in pink:p
Are you gonna add any LED's or lights of some sort?
Tekime
08-27-2003, 01:19 PM
Thanks guys :) I'll keep 'em coming, I should have some more painting done this weekend and I'll take more pics.
For lights I have two UV black lights and a red quad-LED 80mm. I might get another LED fan for the top, still thinking about that one. I also may add a few LED's around the edge of the window, this is assuming I can work out the 'UV glitter water pump' thingie. :)

The heart is basically the same thing, I didn't do anythign special just eyed it out and cut away! Perhaps I should add an addendum on how to keep your cats out of the way while working...
two words... duct tape! (j/k)

09-12-2003, 07:20 PM
Well I've been chopping, hacking, drilling, painting, and chasing away cats as much as time allows. Man, painting this thing is a bugger, I have now painted the front bezel a total of 5 times. I think I just need a lot of primer, the plastic seems to make it crack instantly, and I get hundereds of little scales... grr
Anyway, first off I finished the other cat mod:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_09.jpg
:p
I have a bunch of pics, so be prepared!
Removed the rear grill:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_grill_01.jpg
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_grill_02.jpg
Since the door will be hinged, had to figure out exactly where to put it all. Drilled out holes and test the hinges:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_10.jpg
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_11.jpg
I had to cut away a lot metal to et them to fit well:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_12.jpg
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_13.jpg

This is a crummy pic but the mounting for hinges is done:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_15.jpg
Time for the latch mount:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_16.jpg
And some more random metal:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_17.jpg
Added a 92mm blowhole on the top:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_18.jpg
And some more random metal getting in the way:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_19.jpg
And after inhaling enough steel dust to build another case with, I can start sanding:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_20.jpg
Tekime
09-12-2003, 07:21 PM
You're not supposed to go to the metal, but the case isn't very flat after 1.5 years of use:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_21.jpg
And primer it:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_22.jpg
Aaand sand and primer the hinges:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_23.jpg
As well as the ugly latch:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_24.jpg
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_heart_25.jpg
---
Now the case is entirely sanded/primed, and I'll throw on a color coat once I'm totally comfortable it will look nice. The paint isn't cheap. (I'm also painting my case metallic mirror blue, trying to get my hands wet with the mirror finish thing).
For the record this is the front bezel that's giving me such an awful time:
http://www.fury-tech.com/images/pub/pink/pink_bezel_01.jpg
Let's hope six is the lucky number...
Oh, I painted the latch black with a few coats, same with the hinges but they need one more coat. Hope they don't look too bad, that latch was the only thing I could find around here. Well that's all! Hopefully I can get some more painting done this weekend :):)
TAZTG
09-12-2003, 11:54 PM
Tekime, its starting to take shape. Let me ask you a question about the front. Did you sand it first before you sprayed the primer on? I put 2 coats of primer on and then 3 coats of paint. I sanded between each coat. You did spray a nice light coat and let dry overnite?? I learned that the hardway on my Black & Gold Case. Looks like your enjoying your self and you puttycat is cute..:p
Tekime
09-13-2003, 02:39 PM
Well the first time I painted it I sanded with 400 grit and cleaned it with alcohol. But I didn't use primer... I didn't have any and I wanted to test the pink.
I think that was a bad idea, heh :) I'm going to sand the whole thing down and primer it with atleast two full coats, drying for atleast a day in between. The primer is supposed to dry in an hour, but I found it really isn't ready for sanding for a lot longer.
Anyway, the case is still looking pretty ghetto I know, but I have high hopes. Once I have the paint job done and I can get into the real details, I think it will start looking much better. (I hope anyway :o ).
