I know it's not the most high profile series ever :P. But it's always been a personal favorite of mine and many others. EBworld has the release date for the PC version set at 11/04/03 (best case scenario lol). Gamestop has it listed for march and the official websites have it as TBA (most likely).
The fact that it's being developed by ION Storm has me cautiously optimistic. Just wondering if anyone else was anticipating this game as much as I am ???

I am definitely looking forward to it as I loved the first two games. Was just playing Thief 1 a few moments ago (Lost City) in fact. If you want to check out Thief forums go to TTLG forums (www.ttlg.com/forums) they have a lot of discussion there.

not really, theif 2 was alright but got VERY BORING very fast, the guy swung the sword like a robot, whats with that? so slow to hit someone its dumb but then again this was way back when and im sure those swords were what 20 pounds maybe more? but he only used 1 hand to swing it, maybe if he used 2 it would be quicker....all i remember is being hacked up before i could swing once with the sword, probably wont even install it if i get it free.

The point of the game was to try to get through without even being spotted by the guards. Its really not an action game, you will die easily if you are fighting any more than one guard at a time.

Thief III should be just as good if not better than the first 2 in the hands of Spector-led ION Austin. I think his touch was missing from II. He brought in several ex-Looking Glass guys to do III with him.

arrgghh!!! *pops blood vessel in forehead* they cheat! arghhhh
j/k.... it takes a lot for a game to get me to like it, the only game so far i would say is really good is madden 2004, ive got installed right now -
GTA vice city
max payne 2
NHL 2004 (havent played yet)
madden 2004
nascar thunder 2004
ms flight sim 2004 (crazy confusing)
deerhunter 2004 (so sucks)
beyond the call of duty - internal promo
law & order 2: double or nothing (havent played yet)
judge dredd: dredd v.s death
commandos 3
commandos - boyond the call of duty
robin hood - defender of the crown (weird)
western outlaw
hidden & dangerous 2
tropico 2 - pirate cove
and i only play madden 2004 and max payne 2, the others are when i get uber bored...99% of games arent worth playing, they are alright for like 5 mins then its time to get rid of them. as for thief, i liked the game but it was hard to sneak around, even in the shadows they could see you... it was too hard to kill off one guard then hide his body before another came by.... the game requires massive amounts of patience, i have none, i cant sit and plot and count how many paces this guy takes, then this guy shows up when the wind blows in a no-easterly flow , this other guy checks this corner once every other 3rd time he walks by....i cant hang.

Haha. It sounds like your burnt out on games in general, I've been there before. (Before you criticize me for the fact it's a story based around console gamings, it pertains to pc games too :P)
It was 1997, I owned a n64 and nintendo kept putting out crap platformers that mirrored, yet sucked compared to mario64. Anyway about halfway through Banjo Kazooie I just completely dropped gaming for about a year. With nothing I really wanted on the horizon I just decided to persue other hobbies (paintball) and it more or less took the 1-2 punch of Half-Life and the launch of the Dreamcast (R.I.P :( ) to get me back into gaming, and within a few months I was back into my old ways :D.
Anyway, the overall point in this ramble is that it sounds like you've reached the point where your buying games just to "keep up" with the people that still enjoy it even though you've shut off most of the titles you've bought within the first 20min of play and never looked back. It could be what should be a 10.0 gaming experience but your just not responding to it with the old positive gaming buzz your used to getting :P, like an addict it took more and more to get that same buzz until the drug stopped working :P. My advice would be to step away from the pc for a few months and rejoin the living when HL2 drops :D

Not really. Maybe I should try playing Thief 2 again. It came with my video card a long time ago, and I installed it, and got very bored within the first 15 minutes. Maybe it was the fact that it didn't come with a manual and I had no idea what I was doing :). Also, I agree with everything Vairox said.
But I don't count, because I don't know what I'm talking about.

Mafia was good, but Thief is better!
Thief I & II are my top two favorite games! I'm bored easily by games, but these two games are sweet and I can't wait for the third installment.

Whelp unfortunately the release date is now 6/1/2004 and thats still not completely set...but there are definitely going to be some changes in this game from the old ones. Garret can now climb walls, guards will remember where they last heard a disturbance, they will also react to your shadow and some guards walk around with torches so this is going to be a tough game. Also guards wont walk a predefined path anymore, they will follow your sounds too...I definitely look forward to this one...

I am sorry, but this really seems like these teams have bad program managers. They are given a deadline and when people are ready for them, they announce an extention date. I wish we could do that for our uni coursework then. I bet that would kill our lecturer's brain cells. Anyway, this is spiriling out of control. Every "big" game will always be extended for 2-3times. I understand this is a marketing strategy, but it is very unfair for the consumers...just a thought

It's what Sales/Marketing folks do...promise what is impossible for the developers to deliver considering the circumstances.

I've been looking forward to Thief III for a long time. If I don't get my fix soon, I'm going to have to look for some new fan missions.

The Thief series earned a respectable place in the history of PC gaming. It pioneered the "first-person sneaker" style of game play, the environments were gorgeous, and the objectives were challenging. The multitude of fan missions--some of which are a blast--attest to how popular the game was.

The Thief games required an approach different from most other games. Garrett was designed to be a thief, not a fighter (the manual tells you this). Success in Thief comes from tactics like finding a good observation point that keeps you conceiled and checking out the situation so you can plan your next move. The primary weapons are the blackjack and bow. If you have to draw your sword, it's probably because you messed up and have to fight your way out of a bad situation. It's fun to take out enemies (I often did, if only to ease my escape), but the more difficult levels forbid you to kill anybody. And you'll be more than happy to slip by some of the scary-as-poop supernatural enemies without confrontation.
I noticed this thread because I was about to start one of my own about the game's progress--or lack thereof. I just checked the Thief III Web site, and it still says "Coming Soon." I guess I misunderstand the meaning of soon.
