Why is this in Upcoming Games?

My favorite RTS is probably Myth.

As far as most fun, RA2 all the way. But the all around best IMO is still Star Craft and Brood War.

No way, Dune was the best RTS. The one that started them all.

Red Alert. The original. Best RTS ever. I remember playing 4-6hr long games over the modem. It was awesome. StarCraft was awesome too.

Never played Dune :(

I remember when we first got the internet at my house. We had a 100 hour limit (56k) and I used it up in a little over 2 weeks with Star Craft. I had way too much free time in high school. Now I barely have any.

LOL good question.

I personally think Age of the Empires 1/2, Starcraft, Red Alert 1/2 (all other C&C games) are my favorites. The originals. I am not too big of a fan for those made after 2001 they seem to be ALL going 3D now :\.

Not to argue with you, in fact I agree with you. But i'd like to see you try to convince Blizzard VP Max Schafer of that. I argued with him for 2 days on Usenet about that very thing. His arguement was based on the fact that it won several awards in that genre. That problem with Diablo was that when it came out, nobody knew what catagory to put it in.

Generals doesn't get any thumbs up from me

Cause its graphics, (Which are equal to Warcraft 3)

Have significantly higher requirements.

yes I know its DirectX 9 but even at the lowest settings on a DirectX 8 card it still can't run properly. It only likes newer cards.

It also isn't as well planned as RA2.

Long live Red Alert, long live Westwood.

generals is by EA. My guess is they joined up.

Starcraft Broodwars gets my vote as well.

Though Homeworld would be 2nd.

Warcraft 3 would be and is an awesome game when it is BALANCED, which it is FAR from right now. If you want to be a good player, you either have to be the Night Elf's and abuse the Beastmaster and the Nagga, or abuse human AOE spells while spamming slow. If you do not do this you will not win high level games. Back in ROC days I really loved the game and was quite good but today it is in shambles and I along with many other people refuse to play online until patch 1.13 comes out.

My Warcraft profile back in ROC days when it was actaully a fair game...

I could care less about the lack of balance really because there is always a way to get around it. I.E. Fearie dragons and other units for antimagic. The thing I hate when noob allies hate to listen or people just do dumb things. That I can't stand. I haven't played in about a month though because my computer is broke.:(

Heh, by definition there is no way to 'get around' an imbalance. If there was a way to counter it, it would not be an imbalance. The Beastmaster is so overly powerful it is almost a joke, as if Blizzard is laughing in our face when everyone begs for the patch. Take a look at the top of the ladders and you will see very few Orcs simply because they do not have a viable counter to the NE's Beastmaster and Nagga abuse, or Human AOE spamming. Obviously an NE can stop Human AOE slow spamming with Ferry Dragons, but what can Orcs do about it? NOTHING, you simply have to use these abusive tactics to be competitive.

Not true. Orcs have the spirit wolf caster which can buff magic spells. People just don't use them. I really didn't have a problem with beastmaster and naga abuse. But I did only play team games. Were you playing 1v1?

I can't believe I had to wait until page two to see someone finally mention Total Anhilation. It was and is the best RTS. If only someone could hack the game to add groups. I do miss that. Other than that, no other game comes close.

Thank you for mentioning TA! I still play it even to this day. I even have 2 win2k partitions on 2 of my PC's that I only use to play TA (I just can't get TA to work well in multiplayer on XP)!

Rise of Rome (original AoE expansion) comes to mind as well as one of the best of all times. Red Alert 2 is high on the list, but behind RoR.

My favorite RTS game of all time is Total Annihilation hands down. In my opinion there has been no other game that has come out that matches the scope and features of this gem of a game. I still find myself installing it once in a while to play a few rounds. The unit system was one of the best if not the best I have ever seen. Fully customizeable everything. Spawned all sorts of complete mod conversions. There were thousands of custom maps and units, and tons of people played on boneyards while it was popular. I loved this game and was greatly saddened when Cavedog went down. TA kingdoms was cool also...but not as good as the original.

If I were to choose a runner up...would have to be Starcraft.

I love RTS's

I pretty much have only played multi for the last 5 years, ignoring the single player altogether.

My favorites are;

Empire Earth - By far the most depth.
Rise of Nations - Love the territory aspect
AOEII / Rise of Kings - The two above would not exist without borrowing heavily from it.
Starcraft - Certainly the most unique of all RTS games, I did play it single player.

I think RA2 is best for modern warfare freaks. Generals is so LAME, as in I find it overbalanced. RA2 is overbalanced too, but they pulled it off sucessfully. :D All general freaks, I have nothing against Generals, it is a great game. But was not pulled off as well as the rest of the C&C series.

For Ancient guys, it should be Age of Mythology. It feels like Heroes and AOE combined. RAD !!! :D

For those interested in magic, there is only Warcraft 3 and frozen throne. Basically because I haven't seen any other RTS involving magic. Well except AOM.

For SCI-FI guys, its either Starcraft or Homeworld.
But both are rather old, and Starcraft needs Revival soon.

In my opinion, all the RTS mentioned here are pretty good. However they all have their flaws.

;)
