Take a look and cast your vote:

1. Dell's monstrous 8600:

1.7GHz P-M
15.4" WUXGA LCD
1GB of PC2700 RAM
9600 Pro 128MB
DVD+RW/CD-RW
60GB 7,200 RPM HDD
XP Pro
1.52"s thick

Price:$2800(before mail in rebate).

2. Voodoo's uber lappy the M:460:

1.7GHz P-M
15" SXGA+ LCD
1GB of PC2700 RAM
9600 pro 128MB
DVD+RW/CD-RW
60GB 7,200 RPM HDD
the "Voodoo Tattoo"
XP Pro
1.1"s thick

Price: $4000

Ok vote as follows. Once for price. Once for best screen. Once for best looks.

You can only vote once...

Cheapen up that 8600, you can go with a lesser CPU, LCD, 512mb ram, and do you really need that DVDRW?

You, yourself say your low on cash, you can't go for the best if you dont have the money. I really think vodoo is kinda out of the question for ya, but i do understand that you want to really be sure of this pricy deceision.

I gotta say the Dell all the way. I even voted for looks because I love the look, although if I could get the same machine at the price of a Dell in a Voodoo case @ .4" thinner I'd probly go for that.

I agree with melee about cutting back. You should be able to get the Dell @ $2000 with a 1.5GHZ, 768MB, WSXGA+, and the DVDRW and 7200RPM, that's what I'm doing (maybe minus the 7200RPM). If your heart is set on 1GB, just order 256MB from Dell, take it out and order 1GB from Newegg for $200, and save youself $350.

I'm suprised anyone would consider paying over $1k more for .4" less thickness and a tatoo, you're also missing out on widescreen and UXGA. And you'll hardly notice a difference between getting a $2k Dell, so it'd be pretty much paying twice as much?

his wasn't so much for opinions on me buying, I just wanted to see which you guys thought was better.

Btw, you just cheack the boxes to vote in which ever oens you want;) You can vote all if you want, but please don't:)

But, yeah I do wnat to be sure. Besides that I thought it was interesting that Dell is about $1300 less(with rebate) than voodoo and the voodoo has a worse screen but it's thinner and has a better pain job. Does this warrent an extra $1300? I think it might because if I am gona spend $3k on a lappy I want to show the thing off a little;) But who knows? Maybe I'll stick with a low level lappy until laptops with the San Diego chips are released:) Man that'd be my dream computer right there! Imagine it:

2.8GHz San Diego FX socket 939 .09 micron process cpu(wow that's a mouthful)
1GB of DDR-II PC3200(maybe 3500 or higher) RAM
Mobility Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB
8x DVD-RW/bluelaser writer:) and CD-RW slot load too;)
10,000 RPM 36.7GB WD Raptor(or something better/bigger/both)
mini-PCI-X SB Audigy Gamer
mini-PCI-X wireless a,b,g,i,x card
internal bluetooth
15" UXGA+ LCD(or better)
XP 64 and all cooled perfectly and with 3-4+ hours of battery life
did I mention it's only 1"(maybe a little more) thick and looks super aweomse with a voodoo tattoo and sweet paint job? Well it does!

Las tpost posted before barton boi posted, reply to his.

Yeah I know isn't that crazy? But I might pay it. Also, I know a lot of respectable people who think dell's are total crap. In fact I was talking ot one last night and his view was that dell sells a crappy product for cheap and voodoo sells an overpriced, but half decent product. Seem like voodoo is the correct route, now the one thing is that I can't get a nicer screen form voodo, which sux, I should be able to get a UXGA, but maybe this will change?

I hate Dell's PCs with all the proprietary BS, but I'm starting to love their Laptops. Do what I'm doing and save yourself 2 grand. You can even get a graphite swirl backplate for $40. It might not be yellow with a tatoo, but it's $1960 cheaper. :p

You can get a swirl backplate? Sweet! I can slap some skatboard stickers on there and be good to go! When do you think that SD-FX dream lappy will be a reality? I hope by like June of this year or so:)

barton boi

Hell, get every backplate, 1 for every day of the week and still save yourself $1760. ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHA!

For us smo's it sure sounds good, but then again, if it's total crap we'd wish we spent the extra $1960;) And I know people who've had 8500's fry on them:(

I wish, then again if it was a reality by June it'd cost around $8000 or something.

I hate to burst your bubble but that laptop will never exist ever. Why? Because AMD won't make a mobile version of the FX its their high-end desktop chip. Thats like saying i can't wait for the mobile EE chip ain't gonna happen. The fastest A64 chip that will make it into laptops will be something based on the current A64w/ 1mb L2 cache. That said a Ati and nvidia never make mobile versions of high-end graphics chips either.(ie no mobile 8500,9700,9800). They do it with mid end cards like 7500,9000,9600. So maybe by june or whatever date you chose there might be some new mobile graphics card from ati or nvidia based on their new mid-end chips. :( Sorry dude thats just the way it is.

How do you know all this? Do you work for ATi and AMD? Never say never my friend! It could happen:) But mobile A64's will be out in 1 maybe two months tops o by June there won't be anything new? I think there'd be some kind of socket 939 chips in a laptop eventually.

TheSquire
12-13-2003, 01:05 PM
its mostly just common sense. i doubt socket 939 will ever have a mobile version of any sort. i could be wrong but i would doubt it. the mobile athlon 64 3000+ already exists ;) . I think they are just gonna go with 754 for mobile. AFAIK AMD doesn't have huge mobile plans in the near future. People want a laptop thats mobile and has some battery life. Thats why they choose a P-M over say a P4C. And i guarentee you there will never be a mobile version of the 9800 series the r300 core is way to power hungry and produces far to much heat thats why the r350/60(ie 9600) makes such a good mobile card. I don't pretend to know everything and i could be wrong but there out to make money not the most "uberest" laptop.

ATilaptops
12-13-2003, 04:37 PM
True, but the "uberest" laptop tends to bring in money. The voodoo M:460's, the "uberest" laptos out right now are sold out until 2004 I believe, if they make $1000 each one then they just made a few million I think;) You're probably correct about the new laptop cards, but what are they going to do then? Just leave it where it is? I think socket 939 might make it. It does look like socket 754 is the choice for now though. However your quote about the A64 mobile being out is untrue, or misinformation. In fact the ones out currently, such as in voodoo's M:855, are "Desktop Replacement" A64's. It's odd but that's what anandtech said in their review. They call them DTR A64's and it's confusing but appearantly there are true A64-M's coming soon that will have the power of the A64 (slightly less probably) and be able to go into thin and light laptops like the P-M's. So I guess that's the future for now, who knows what'll be out next year? Maybe a mobile r4** card and socket 939 or possibly a fast socket 754, either way, unless Intel gives me some sweet stuff, I'll be going AMD and ATi for laptops as well as desktops:)
