Add top and side blowholes. I love server case mods! Oh, and paint it. That's an ugly color.
Colossus

But other then that it looks cool eh?
It is freaking huge! Now if he ever gets back to me i can finalize the deal...
so you can only put 1 mobo in there? I don't get the idea about server cases, what are they for??? "duh servers" but can you put a bunch of HDD's in it or soemthing? What's the exact purpose of having one.

Lots of potential with that case. I like the glass door on the front..

01-17-2004, 07:37 PM
how about a pair of top blowholes (maybe 192mm fans if you can) and some handles up top. Big ones.
casters on the botom, that way she rolls nice and smooth. Maybe filters on all the intakes, that way it stays cleaner. Then a righteous paint job (maybe electric yellow and black?) and perhaps a small window of strange shape?

Great ideas! If I get this case (still waiting).. Then I am going to need help modding it.. Since this will be my first real big project.. I fiqured might as well get my feet wet!
I can probably house two complete setups in there! That thing is a monster! :)
I love the window door too.. I thought it was a small 24U server rack at first...

They can fit plenty 5.25 drives and there is plenty space which makes for better airflow.

so you can have a bunch of cd-rom drives LOL.
I always though servers were giant hardrives for space and folding, games etc.

It used to be... But not every case manufacturer has some kind of crappy case they call a "server case" but its not a true server case.. Since most dont come with redundant power supplies and cannot even hold a EATX board...
But almost anything nowadays can be called a "server" without it being 100% true to the term...

that's an awesome looking case with a whole lot of potential! nice! :) like most people have said, blow holes and handles would be nice. how about some custom wire wrapping so you can have some nice and cool looking wires? that would be after you've added an awesome looking window!! ;)

I think that would impede the structural integrity of the case a lot if its as heavy as it looks.
Yeah, there's some modding potential there. Its got real shoddy cooling, so fix that. Maybe do something with the bezel and of course, a unique window on the side -panel.

Actually depending on dimensions.. I was actually thinking about mounting a Prommy in there :)
Its on my list as potential possibilities... :)

how about mounting a notebook cd-rom, a mini-itx mobo (or pico-itx), an hdd, and then another full system in there? Could be interesting, if you made it all sleek like with an integrated KVM or something.

I thought about using it for multi motherboards... But I really got to get it home before I can see what will and will not fit...
I wont have it until a few days...

You could easily fit a mini-itx board. They're smaller than a DVD-rom drive. and the support equipment for it would fit elsewhere.
Just an idea.
oooh, how about using an LCD on the side panel that is the display for mobo#2?

Possible... But the case wont be on the desk.. It would be sitting on the floor.. It is too large to stick on the desk I have now :)
So looking at an LCD that low on the ground can be difficult.. Plus I am new to this and I dont know if I want to try and rip an LCD panel apart :(

Ripping a standard desktop LCD apart is easy. Just start taking out screws.

Make it into a crib for your kid.

All I have to say is fill up every 5 1/2" bay and use it as your gaming machine. You'll never have to switch CD's!

If you're like me, you'll be playing quite a few games at once, and it's a pain to always be switching out various CDs and DVDs. (Encarta, Halo, KOTOR, Morrowind, music CDs and CD-Rs can all go through my 2 opticals in a matter of hours...it's a pain:mad: )

Uh.......big.
Damn! That is Really Big! My project could probably fit inside that one!
Couple of questiions Colossus:
Steel or Aluminum?
Is the rear I/O standard for ATX? MB anchors too? (My main prob)
Is the door gonna stick around, or get some modding love as well?
Coke or Pepsi?
Ok, enough. That looks like a whole lot of fun! The 2 in one idea is very interesting. A gaming/OC'ing rig and a dedicated seperate folding machine in the same case. Very cool.
Well, when you get it and have a chance to do some measuring and brainstorming, let's hear some more of your ideas.
BTW, I believe it is only proper to come up with a project name. I vote for "Project: Colossal"

Just how I like it REAL BIG!

Steel.. So it weighs a TON!
Is the rear I/O standard for ATX? MB anchors too? (My main prob)
Standard ATX board mounts and comes with 2x ATX Powersupplies.. Not sure exactly how the power supplies mix.. Since there is on power cable. You can get a better look when looking at the back of the case
Is the door gonna stick around, or get some modding love as well?
I believe it sticks.. You can see a door lock. But I am not sure. I will have it on Wed/Thur
Coke or Pepsi?
Pepsi all the way!!!!

I was thinking of a name for her... I am very excited about it. Since I am a virgin modder it will be difficult for me to try things out. But I am willing to try things out..
GLScooby, I respect your opinion. I have seen the great work that you have done.. Along with all the other modders like TAZ and Santa.. And all the others I know I am not naming since I am drawing a blank...
I have always wanted to mod a case. But when I look at my basic Enermax and Antec cases I dont see what I see in her... Does that make sense? I guess my basic cases dont turn me on like that new case does!
The two pc's in one is a nice idea.. I was thinking of something like that when BTX comes around.. Since then you can actually just mount it on the other side of the mobo tray and attach two cases to one...
I will surely have pictures for all the fans. But work would probably be slow. I do work.. But I need help in planning out my strategy..

Im still waiting for the interior pictures :(
But the dimensions of it is 25(H) x 11(W) x 19(D)
Also I found out that the clear door is not plexi!!!!!!
Its a very fine Metal Mesh cover!
I might keep it or switch to a smoked plexi.. Not sure!

keep the window it sounds like it is way more durable than plexi
plexi is easily scratched, and we don't want a scratched door now do we?

True.. But I am usually pretty careful.. I am just worried about rust.. Its not aluminum.. It is quite heavy steel :D
Since I am going to be sanding it down to allow the new coat of paint to adhere better.. Do you guys use any kind of sealant?

There are iron alloys in steel I think, can't remember my chemistry at the moment. But yes, steel and iron can and do rust (given the right things and time).

The only thing scarier than an 800W psu itself, is the person considering using more than half of it on the case!
Seriously, considering the dimensions you told us, and looking at how NOT DWARFED it is in the case, I'm thinking that is one huge frikkin' psu.

Actually, it's the opposite. Ash gets on people who think they need giant psu's. Like they'll get a 500MHz better O/C, 150 more 3DMarks, and the 12 dollar memory they found on eBay will run at 2-2-2-3 timings because they got a big psu.
(Besides, we all know it's the XIDE Pads (http://www.sharkyforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=188396&perpage=15&pagenumber=1) that get you that stuff)
(I wonder if he noticed I went out and got the 550 Antec......)[

Why did that case have such a big PS anyway?? Do all servers usually come with Big ones are 2 smaller ones? Another Question to Consider.. How Hot does an 800W PS get and How Loud are they? It does seem to take up alot of the top part. Will the Size of the PS mess up your Modding Plans??

What that looks like is the PSU cage. It's a cage that you plug 2 hot swap power supplies into and then it connects their outputs into a single set of connectors (it has a backplane that accepts the various voltages output by the supplies and then runs the connectors off that)
That way if one dies, you just pull it out, put a new one in, and you don't even have any downtime at all.

True, But I dont believe it is hotswappable :(
I have to take a look.. But it does come with Dual 400w Antec PSU :)
Why I think it is not hotswapable.. Is if you look at the back of the case picture.. There is only one input for voltage.. Which is NOT on the power supply but on the case mounting below the powersupply...
I am very interested to see how that is... I wont have it until later today or tomorrow to know for sure...
If I dont like the over 1HP powersupply.. I can always pawn it off :D

How's that make it any different? It just means that they would get both AC in and DC out hooked through the backplane. Which is actually the better way to do it.
They may not be hotswappable, but I'm betting they are.

Maybe/Maybe not.. I have never seen a dual power supply built like that... Most of the hot swaps I have worked with had individual lines to each power supply...
The think about using a backplane in your example, is if the backplane fails and down goes the machine... Atleast in the usual setups I have worked with if the power supply fails.. It does not go down :)

In any redundant system, if the backplane goes down, so does the system. The backplane is what connects the dual outputs of the individual PSUs to the single mobo connector, so if it dies, then the mobo won't be getting power anymore, and it won't matter if the supplies can still make it.
We'll see.
And I hope that you get the case and it isn't some strange scam or something.

Interesting idea.. I have a 500VA APC UPS in the closet.. I can mount that inside the case and provide internal battery backup.. But even a small 500VA will add a nice chunk of weight to the project.

I had some weird idea about the lower bay.. The one with 2x fans... I was thinking about modding that into a slide out draw of some kind to store hardware in.. With padded walls, etc...

That would be to dangerous and I would have to take it down to the bare metal... Since the paint would probably insulate the case a little...
So how do you figure out what colors to use? I am looking at it and I am not sure...
I was thinking about using those chrome paint cans to paint the inside.. I like the mirror effect... But what about the outside?
When you are painting a case, how do you know that color x,y and z are the colors you want?
I rather not repaint the case 20 times before finding the right colors :)

I'm doing test runs on a crapola case that was destined for the garbage. You of all people should have an extra junker case lying around to check out some color schemes if you need that kind of visual example. I do, so that is why I'm doing it that way.

Looks like a beaut. Couple comments... 1) I was RIGHT about the hot swap. But they look very nice. 2) Looks like a pair of 80's up front with restrictive grills, time to cut those out and make nice free breathing 120's holes. 3) Is that space for 3 HDD's side by side? and 4 vertically per stack? Looks like a good prospect for network storage. Maybe get a nice SCSI raid5 card and a gigabit ethernet controller for the box? (or even a 4 or 8 channel IDE controller)
Looks like you'll be having a lot of fun.

Yeah yeah :D
I am not used to seeing hotswaps with a single voltage input line...
Its an older Antec psu...
That cage can hold 9 HD's ... 3 drives per segment...
Plus... I found an aditional 3 drive segment on the other side panel side... against the 5.25" Drive bays!
So a total of 12 internal 3.5, 8 External 5.25"
Those fans on the front are 92mm Sunon with a filter infront...

Yes it has a slide out mobo tray.. Sorry didnt include it in my pics :(
Its nice too.. Its a complete tray.. From the back plate to the front plate..
I also bought 8 paint cans since I dont know what colors I like :(
Metallic Blue
Forrest Green
Black
Chrome
Anodized Red
Base coat for Anodized paint
Burgundy
Chameleon paint
So now I need to give it a shot on a trial case..
Also this case is brown.. IF I dont have it sand blasted, how would I make it easier for the paint to take effect.. Since the brown color is really dark...

Have your friend with the sandblaster take a look at the case and get his opinion on if it would do any damage to it, if he sandblasted it. IMO, I think it would be better to get some good old hands on action with some sandpaper.

I guess the best advice I can give is to take your time, don`tr get in a hurry, I got in a hurry one time painting my car and I messed up and had to start all over again. hehe thanks :) I'll ask her to rub down my back
The case has some small cover plates for the 5.25" bays.. and they are removable.. So I am going to remove about 4 of them and give it a test paint.. I want to see if what color I would like more and how well the color holds against the dark color the case is already...
That is what I am doing tomorrow..
I was looking at modding the front panel from 92mm fans to a set of 120mm fans.. But the width of two of those fans is wider then the case itself... But I'll have to check again...
the exhaust is a single 92mm fan.. I want to cut away the back plate and there is a perfect place for a second fan...
maybe I can mod that front intake bin (below the drive racks) for four 92mm fans :)

On the color... are you looking for flashy or just nicer than standard? Since it is such a huge case, I would suggest that a darker color would make it not seem like it is taking up the entire room (unless you want that effect!)

Modding and quiet potential ...that's a nice combo'
All those paint samples looked pretty good. The top one appeared to have the most consistent finish, but I prefered the other two colours :)
You could use a lot of auto-type parts in a project like this, given the dimensions.
For example, you could not only watercool, but could replace practically the whole rearside door with a humungous low profile radiator to have almost passive cooling potential ...then use a huge, low profile, low rev fan to move just enough air to do the job :D
I'd probably never look at a fan anywhere else on that monster that was less than 120mm it's so big ..and hence the bonus of using bigger, slower fans.
When you get it, take a laptop, a paper, and a nice comfy chair and sit inside it during a quiet time, I'm sure the relaxation and the intimate surroundings will prompt further ideas :D
Good luck ...great potential ...and the house extension to home it would make a nice follow-up feature ...LOL, couldn't resist.

Just thought ...you speak about a 'parts bin / toolbox' type scenario ...you could have enough sppace there too, to put a decent sized networking switch or router in there too up the top ...there's seemingly no end to what could be done lol!
I like those anodised finishes though ...some almost have a near poweder-coated type of texture to them ...if you look at some of the nice West Coast Custom Harleys of years past when powder coating became fashionable, they had some great gunmetal and solid colour effects ...but which not only shined with almost mirror finish ...they appeared nicely textured too.
Have to say, I'm too boring, all my PC's are silver or black ...well, except for the one painted in WRC Subaru Impreza Blue and Gold!
But I don't have that any more.

I was looking for a stencil of some X-Men characters to paint on or some dragons...

Door...
http://home.comcast.net/~blah/case/images/door.jpg
That is the front door that will keep my little girl out :D
The piece of the right (silver wave thing) is a add on piece that I removed and I dont want it to be red like the rest of the case...
What color do you think would look good there? on that piece?

Painting while the superbowl is on!!!!
The only time to case mod!
I dont need to watch that ummm... trash :D
Mod is much more fun! I got most of the case painted outside of the main frame...
EDIT:
I feel I killed quite a few brain cells! I even had the garage doors open!!!
How can any person sniff this crap! (I watch Cops :D)

I was amazing how I got a pm about this case... I have really been a bad person and have not touched it at all :(
I sometimes fly through projects, but this one i do want to finish, since it is taking a large portion of my garage.
Maybe I will have some updated picture in a few days. The whole case atm is tapes and primed, I need to prime it a few more times and let it dry a few days inbetween.
So mods, forgive the rise of a old/dead thread :D

How much I would love to see the finished project.. But it is by far, from finished. The case is only primed and ready (maybe another primer coat or two) for the many layers of paint.
I will have to try to find time, I need to wipe it down now with a wet cloth since it has collected quite a bit of dust...
