Just like the topic says, will you have to pay a monthly fee to play WoW, like in other MMORPGs?

To answer this question (again) and your next inevitable question...

Will there be monthly fee to play [World of Warcraft]?
Yes; however, we are still investigating our business model and have not yet determined what the fee will be.

Taken from the official WOW FAQ.

Is the Pope Catholic?

The only question is how much they'll milk the Warcraft fanbase. Odds are that it will be $15 but I wouldn't be suprised by either $13/$16/$17

Do these types of games cost more to devolop and run for game companys and actually justify the monthly fee or do game devolopers just want to charge more since people will pay for it?

Most of the money goes into server fees, continual development of the gameworld, glitch fixes, and paying GMs to babysit.

Exactly, constant maintanence of servers and making sure they're always up alone is a huge cost and that's why they are going to be charging a monthly fee.

On a lighter note: I've seen the game first hand and I think it will be well worth the money spent on it ;) .

Im just curious but what goes into maintaining servers? I dont know much about game servers, let alone the big ones. I know if they fix patches and stuff, they have to update it but what about simple server maintanence?

you have to have supply them with power plus the money it takes for how much bandwith they need for them. I thinking they need some T3 and T3s dont come chip. Plus you have to play people to admin the server and watch for cheaters and what not.

Personly I dont like server Fees. There is a reason I am waiting for Guild wars to come out. No server people who made the company are some of the big shots from blizzard that left.

I bet they wish they could use a T3 line.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but it would not be uncommon for a heavily used game server (like one for WoW) to be on a T3.

I bet they use more than a T3. Probably OCx level or GigE.

Hence the "I bet they wish they could use T3."

I don't mind the monthly fee so much but why pay full price for the game? I know most MMORPG's end up releasing the game for download after a year and just charge the monthly, much like SWG just did. The game should only be at max $30, but knowing Blizzard it will be over $50.

The reason they do that is because they have to cover the cost of making the game in the first place. It's just like making any other game really, only you make it for online use only. So you pay full price about $50 and then you get 1 month of free access to the content. If you don't like it then stop playing and don't pay, but if you do like it then continue paying for the content and constant update. The interesting thing for me is: I buy games and either beat them of get bored with them within a week or 2 and hardly ever play them again. So 1 month of access is more than enough for me to know if I like the game or not.

That still doesn't justify a $50+ price tag. The game is expensive enough without charging $10+ to play every month. You don't need to charge $50 plus monthly fees to make a profit, don't be fooled. Plenty of games debut at around $20 - 30$ and manage to get a decent profit. Most of these MMORPGs end up as free downloads anyway. Like you I only play for a month or so but we are probably not the norm and not the target audience. Because of the popularity of the franchise I think WOW will do well no matter what they charge.
