he got it for 50 bucks and it works. w-98se pentium 1 dont know the cpu speed 64 mb ram ibm thinkpad. my question is do all laptops have this... "Interface: 32-bit CardBus Type II" he wants to buy an external cd drive but the only ones i seen at newegg were external cdrw usb 2.0. the lappy has a usb port but its only 1.1. so i was looking at one of these http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=39-101-111&depa=3 and wasn't sure if it would work. also looking at one of these http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=39-130-001&depa=3 for his internet connection he has a 33.6 modem in the slot now but i cant get it to get a dial tone

Most Pentium I laptops that I'm familiar with had 16-bit PCMCIA slots, but not 32-bit CardBus slots.
If you knew what model ThinkPad it was, it wouldn't be hard to look up what type of PCMCIA slot you have.
There's a good chance that IBM made a compatible CD-ROM drive. If so, you could probably find one on eBay or elsewhere. But you'd need to know what's compatible with your particular ThinkPad model.

The ThinkPad 560X does support 32-bit CardBus. The models I'm familiar with used 200 or 233 MHz processors. If you want to know the specs of your particular ThinkPad, you can get them by looking up the "type" number on the bottom of the laptop. For a ThinkPad 560X, it'll probably start with 2640-.
Here's a site you might find handy at some point:
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=PFAN-3T5RFV
It's the hardware maintenance manual for the ThinkPad 560X. There's all sorts of good info in there.
I might be able to find some info for a 560X CD-ROM, but can't find it right this second.
