At $600, you're really scraping the bottom of the barrel. HERE's (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3163026&cat=4070&type=19&dept=3944&path=0%3A3944%3A3951%3A4070) an ECS notebook with an Athlon XP 1600+ for $598, but you'll need some extra RAM and I have no idea what the build quality is like.

Another option is to keep an eye out for Dell sales and rebates. They run all sorts of offers like $150 rebates all the time. (You can find those deals at a lot of "bargain" web sites like dealcatcher.com.)

Kind of gives you hope, seeing really cheap laptops. You know it won't be long before more distributors lower prices and increase quality.

what you could do to that laptop is get a mobile XP2600+ and just replace the cpu with that.....and then a 128mb stick for $20......that's a $720 laptop.....you proly wont be able to find one that good for that cheap

Look at the link I posted above, for only $650 you would get those specs and still have a warranty since it wouldn't be modified.
