How well can a laptop play Doom3? Just curious.

Depends on what kind of laptop. It should play fine with a 9700, 1GB of RAM and a 1.6GHz Dothan. I mean no high details or anything but it outgha play acceptably.

Laptops are getting pretty powerful. The new dothan chips have a cache size of 2048 and the 9800 mobility should be widespread soon. With a 2.0GHz dothan, 9800M, and 1GB of RAM you should be getting really good performance (equal or better to mid-range desktop performance), all in a less than "desktop replacement" sized package with good battery life (the new dothans are beasts and give you good battery life).

I don't think there will be 9800M's. The new x600, which I may be getting soon is the next mobile gfx card. It is PCI-E and will have up to 128MB, although it's possible up to 256MB, and will give performance on par or better than a desktop 9800 Pro. With that, 1GB of RAM and a 1.7GHz Dothan I will be playing DOOM 3 quite nicely. And the best part is that in a year I can swap out my x600 for a mobile x800 and my 1.7GHz for a 2.13GHz and have enough power to play the latest games without buying a whole new laptop:D

Well...the 9800M was just announced by ATi, so...I'm sure it'll be more widespread :)

Regardless, I'll install Doom 3 on this laptop and let you know how it goes.

I guess I missed it on their site, odd...

Funny how they rank the x600 higher but I read it has a 128-bit interface but with 16 pipelines whereas the 9800 has 256-bit interface (quad too) but only 8 pipelines. Something seems odd here.

Well, I seem to be able to run Doom 3 fine on my Acer Aspire 1620 (for my rig, check the lower half of my sig) in 1024x768 - medium or high detail setting...
With "fine" I mean smoothly, only a tiny bit of swapping when opening doors and such. Extracting the .pk4 files with winrar seems to help.

That's cool then. So my 64MB 9700, 1GB of RAM and 1.7GHz Dothan (with 2MB of cache which I hear D3 loves) out to run the game fine. Coolness, but I'm still gonna try and get one with an x600:D

What kind of gfx you got on there?

My friend has been playing Doom 3 on a 1.8ghz Desktop with a R8500, low settings, 800x600. I would assume if you just had a 1.4ghz Pentium M with a decent 64mb video card, you could do it.

It occurs to me that D3 isn't that hard to run, unless you want max everyhing:p

FYI my Dell D600 doesn't run Doom3 at all. It's well below specs (1.6GHz, 512MB, Mobility Radeon 9000), but I tried it anyway. Constant stuttering at 640x480 low detail. I have to say though, 640x480 never looked so good. (As long as you stand still.)

Well I have a Pentium M 1.3GHZ, 64DDR 9000 and 512DDR, and it runs decent:D 640-480, but all the goodies on mid details

If I had a 64mb video card I would attempt it, but I only have 32mb.

It crashes without CAT drivers but it plays smooth at 10x7 med details on my 64MB 9700, 1.7GHz Dothan and 1GB of RAM.
