I'll be waiting until it comes out in stores. Quite a good system though, ordering it through Steam. Nice.. ewitte 08-27-2004, 12:13 PM Originally posted by Alpine Im preloading mine right now. click here (http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news) Have you started playing it yet? I just found the other link ;) Eric ImaNihilist 08-27-2004, 12:18 PM I guess it's safe to say that HL2 has gone gold.... or goldish. Maybe more silver. Yeah. HL2 has gone silver. w00t. 2630Goon 08-27-2004, 12:49 PM ITS GONE SILVER OMG YYYEEEHHAAAAWWWW!!!!!! LordVampyre 08-27-2004, 01:08 PM wonder how long till all the complaining starts? 2630Goon 08-27-2004, 01:15 PM Originally posted by LordVampyre wonder how long till all the complaining starts? what complaining?that they cant play the game yet? soupnazi 08-27-2004, 01:19 PM Hmmm....I wonder if Melee's trick will work here.;) score14thebigman 08-27-2004, 01:25 PM I don't think it even still works with CS:S. I tried it a few days after and it kept saying my credit card has been declined. And I tried it a few times and closed steam right when it said to. KaoTiK 08-27-2004, 02:03 PM I don't really see the point in pre-loading the game... 2630Goon 08-27-2004, 02:06 PM I guess its cheaper to do it that way KaoTiK 08-27-2004, 02:09 PM Originally posted by 2630Goon I guess its cheaper to do it that way Well pre-loading it doesnt change how much you have to pay for it to get the key to unlock the files. As far as I can tell the only benefit is the few hours wasted downloading the game are used up while the game isn't even released... ewitte 08-27-2004, 02:14 PM Originally posted by KaoTiK Well pre-loading it doesnt change how much you have to pay for it to get the key to unlock the files. Which means they make more $ :) Eric ImaNihilist 08-27-2004, 02:29 PM Originally posted by KaoTiK Well pre-loading it doesnt change how much you have to pay for it to get the key to unlock the files. No. But they are still going to charge you $50. Best Buy will also charge you $50, but Valve won't see all 50 of those dollars if you get it at Best Buy. If you get it off Steam, they get all 50. Terry 08-27-2004, 02:36 PM Originally posted by ImaNihilist If you get it off Steam, they get all 50. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo, smart! Soup, what's the trick you are talking about? KaoTiK 08-27-2004, 02:38 PM I think we are misunderstanding eachother, lol. I don't understand why they would give people the ability to download the game before they're even allowed to buy or play it. I understand that Valve gets more money when people buy it off steam, but pre-loading the game changes nothing. 7192004 08-27-2004, 02:40 PM Originally posted by 2630Goon ITS GONE SILVER OMG YYYEEEHHAAAAWWWW!!!!!! :D ImaNihilist 08-27-2004, 02:45 PM Pre-loading creates hype. The hope is that hype translates into sales. Terry 08-27-2004, 02:52 PM Actually, I know people who don't like CDs and would rather keep games on their computer. They can't have everyone downloading from their servers the day of release, so they can just make it available for pre-loadign for a month in advance of the release date. Smart move I think. Do you get a CD though when you buy through them? I'd be worried about losing my account/cd-key or something. ewitte 08-27-2004, 03:06 PM Originally posted by Terry Actually, I know people who don't like CDs and would rather keep games on their computer. Thats all good until the hard drive craters one day :) Eric score14thebigman 08-27-2004, 03:18 PM Originally posted by Paladyr Do you get a CD though when you buy through them? You can ask for a CD I think and the cd-key is stored on the account so I think that means you can go to anyone else's house that has steam/hl2 and load your account and play. Actually the reason they preload is so that on the day when they release HL2 their servers don't have to distribute as many files to the people who buy it over steam. Ever notice how steam and the major download sites are hosed when a new version of counter strike comes out? THis way almost all of the files are already on the clients' machines when the game is officially released. Never thought of it that way, makes perfect sense. :) Alpine 08-27-2004, 07:04 PM Originally posted by ewitte Have you started playing it yet? KaoTiK 08-27-2004, 10:21 PM Originally posted by Alpine Nope, Can't play it yet. Im trying to find where it stored on my harddrive, but I can't find it. It's stored in X:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps. But the files are encrypted and no matter what you do you can't make them visible. They don't even show up when you look at the directory in Dos, heh. I'm getting the "servers are too busy message." Why don't they have a que system? dynamiks 08-30-2004, 06:12 PM I think I'll wait till it hits the stores... I rather have the CD's, box, instructions and all than paying the same price for a download. And I wish the game would hurry and come out already I'm so anxious, I've been waiting 6 years!! :D Doomah 08-30-2004, 07:03 PM I'm actually thinking about buying it over Steam. Having HL/HL2/CS:S all "online" makes it so much easier. If you reformat, all you have to do is install Steam, let the game download, and voila. No more flopping CD's around, searching around for updates/patches, applying them, etc. Ultimately though, it depends on where it's cheaper, retail or Steam. If it's cheaper in retail, then I'll just buy it and use the cd key, the discs will collect dust. I thought they said it would be cheaper through Steam though. Makes sense, because there's no manual/box/disc/package. Of course if I didn't have broadband, then Steam would be the enemy. ;) Harbinger 08-30-2004, 08:45 PM Originally posted by Paladyr i love how when i explain something, and then someone after me repeats what i said, they get the credit lol. The 30 mintues now will probably translate to 10 hours not wasted loading when the game is released. Just one more thing to get out of the way, it's not like I'm using that 1Gb anyway. Ummm Maybe try a credit card you didn't steal? :D Just kidding.. Timman_24 08-31-2004, 09:33 PM I just preloaded mine. I like the idea of downloading instead of having to run to the store. My nearest EB is 30 mins away, and I dont want to buy from walmart... Also I just got counter strike: Source beta. Its pretty cool... ninjazed 09-18-2004, 10:01 AM Steam....hmmmmm sounds like alot of agg, to save some time? if you could start playing the game, even a few levels, before the commoners got their slimy mits on 'em, that would be different, that would be worth the agg of steam SharkyExtreme.com
