I was piecing together some speaker stands and wanted some painting info. I am black laquering them and was wondering what to use to wet sand them. I used a laquer sealer on the wood first but there is some unevenness and a bit of pebbling so I want to sand that out.

Is 600 too coarse? I already have a bunch of that but I can stop by the hardware store and get some 800. How high should I go?

If I got your first post correct, you are doing wood.

wet sanding wood = bad idea.

You don't need to go crazy, like 1500 or any thing. If you go too high, the bonding surface for paint to wood gets less desireable (easier to chip). There should be a little roughness for paint bonding when it comes to wood. The primer and paint will take care of alot of imperfections in wood painting.

Your 600 to 800 should cover the bases. Try a scrap piece of wood with your sanding and go through the entire paint process to check to see if the results meet your expectations.

Good luck, and as always, post pics!

Thanks for the info. Yes I am painting wood but as I said I sealed it first with a laquer sealer. I am only going to surface sand it between coats. When I finish I will try to post some pictures if they come out nice.
