Hey guys,

I'm wondering if you can help me out.

I finally have some money saved up, and recently picked up a few games I've been enjoying very much. Right now, I'm pretty content with my gaming situtation (i.e. Don't feel the need for any more games yet).

So I was thinking about maybe upgrading my PC a little with the money I have.

Only problem is, I don't want to have spent most of my money on upgrades, and then realize a few days later (once I have no money left to spare) that 3 new games I had no idea were coming out so soon have been released.

So does anybody maybe have some links showing the release schedule for the 4 big platforms (GC, PS2, Xbox, PC) over the next month or so? I'm not talking about through November or the end of the year or anything, just maybe to the end of October-ish.

Kudos to anyone who can help. :)

WoW is about as generic as a MMORPG gets. The stress test did nothing for me. I don't know the first thing about the new EQ 2....though I think it would be real funny if it actually turned out to be somewhat innovative. Here it is that WoW is doing it's best to be the EQ alternative while the real EQ takes a sharp turn in the road to make the alternatives look tired and dated.

"Flat-out" looks fun to me , if you like violent smash-up car games.
I encourage you to check out the preview videos - http://www.flatoutgame.com/

Also there's F.E.A.R. , which looks very fun (FPS game )
Not sure when thats coming out tho...

I've played WoW and EQ2 both now, and EQ2 is hands down better.

WoW is almost exactly like EQLive with a new wrapper, and you level waaay too quickly.

EQ2 is a much better game, looks better, with a lot more life in it, if I had to guess.

Have to remember, WoW is in beta and the exp will more then likely drop once its released.

They do this to let people reach high level to be able to test the levels.

As for EQ2 I think sony has made a majority of their fan based pissed off at them with SWG and their customer support.

Though I do miss dieing by "A Giant Rat" in WoW like you did in EQ :D

Well IMHO most console games are overrated cartoonish trash for 12 year olds :P Soooo in your attempt at being sarcastic I'd say you were right on ;)
And just for the record: I too think Doom 3 was way overhyped

PC: Myst IV, Half-Life 2

Console: Mortal Kombat Deception & Halo 2

I have a PS2 and am going to wait until Deception hits Greatest Hits status, I think, since I still have Deadly Alliance and dig playing it.

Myst IV is going to be only $39 at intro, I think, so when it hits $29, I'm all over it. Half-Life 2 - I am going to wait for the reviews and the patches and a price drop to maybe $39 or $29.

UT2004 is still keeping me very busy, after all these months. :)

Well, to put things in perspective, anything less would unacceptable.

I mean, you could buy all 3 consoles easily for less than the price of that video card in your sig. Think about that for a second.

So yeah...if you've got the money to invest in PC gaming (which no matter how you slice it is infinetly more expensive than console gaming), it had damn well BETTER be more entertaining.

You wouldn't pay $40,000 for a new BMW, and expect it to be no better than a $15000 Honda, right?
yet the fact that PC and console games (overall) ARE so close in many ways, is what makes console games so damn popular. For the price of a flat, average, barebones PC, one can buy their favorite 2 consoles with a few games each.

Talking strictly about gaming: point made.

But most people use their PC for more than just games.

I liked the whole mouse/keyboard thing and (more importantly) I sucked balls aiming with a controller. Then I slowly eased into it and now I'm much more comfortable on the 'box than I am with mouse and keyboard.

Nobody can dispute that mouse/keyboard is the more precise control scheme, but I personally enjoy the Controller S more.

Bearded Kirklander
10-04-2004, 12:13 AM
But the controller could not possibly be as fast and responsive in aiming as a mouse, could it? I'm used to fast fraggin' in UT2004, for instance. Would not want to slow down and have to have the paced aiming thing. Unless you went auto-aim, how could you get a fast reaction time and keep the pace going?

most of the people who prefer PC games over console games are also usually people who play FPS or realtime strategy games 80% of the time... in those types of games... a mouse/keyboard is infinitely better...

howver... in just about every other genre (racing, fighting, rpg, platform, puzzle) a gamepad is superior... thats why just about every sharky who plays madden on their PC also uses a PS2 dualshock pad and USB adapter.

Mikey himself said that he prefers eye-candy filled FPS games.... well then of course he will prefer PC gaming which is played using mouse/kb and with a $500 video card... however for people like me who prefer games with actual gaming substance (gameplay, storyline, characterization, skills)... a $200 console is more than enough

I haven't played on a console (not counting emulators) since the 80s. My last console gaming was on a friends nintendo (those plain grey boxes way back before half of you guys were born ;) ), and before that was frogger and pac man on the atari 2600.

Pac Man has to be the oldest still surviving game.
Ahhh the good old days when games were simple ;)

BTW IMHO you forgot one of the main attraction of consoles today:
you don't need a college degree to get games working ;)

True.

But if you look at it from another angle again, while you can do other things with a PC, what makes computers cost so much IS the gaming stuff: Video card, Sound card, memory, super fast CPU, etc. If you just want to do the stuff you mentioned with a PC, it won't be too expensive really. But when you throw in the stuff to make it a half decent system for games, it really adds up.

I wonder how long it will take these console makers to realize that the money is in software and not hardware.
M$ took the first step by selling their XBOX under production cost.

But just look at satellite TV.

Did you think before you posted that??? Why do you think some consoles have gone down, or can't touch Nintendo or Playstation status?? It is because of the games, and people who try to compete know that, if they can't attract good developers then they won't sell consoles. Also, talking about M$... how do you think M$ put the "$" in their name? It is because Bill Gates figured out computers are useless without software. So yeah, I think everyone has figured out that software is the key in the computer/console industry. /end rant

Well PS2 weren't exactly cheap when they came out ya know :P
Off course they are cheaper now, they are old.
Not even 149$ for an XBOX beats the price you get on a professional satellite dish installation in up to 4 rooms with free programming.

I suppose your TV programming you will need month after month, no guarantee you will buy new games monthly...
It's just where I stand now I do all my gaming on the PC and I'm not gonna spend 149$ on an XBOX just so i can play 2 games.
But if you could get a console and a couple games for under 100$ ppl like me might get hooked and the system and buy more games in the future.

Costco has some great bundles for consoles. You can get an extra controller, the DVD Remote and a game or two, maybe some memory cards thrown in, usually for a lot less than if you bought them separately. I think the $99 price point of the cube is awesome, and the $149 for the Xbox and PS 2 is pretty great, considering that they come with the ability to play DVD movies. Certainly a lot better than the $300 price they originally came out as.

You have to keep in mind the general population is nothing like the people on this board.

For most people out there a computer will cost $500-$1000+, and parents these days know the kids are just going to use it to play games. So it's not such a tough choice to go with an XBox,PS2,GC cause they save money and a console is less problematic than a computer which needs maitenance every now and again.
