This mod just inspired me to que up The Wall:) And I had to quote this from his worklog:
So ya
Thought ya
Might like to go to the show.
To feel the warm thrill of confusion
That space cadet glow.
Tell me is something eluding you, sunshine?
Is this not what you expected to see?
If you wanna find out what's behind these cold eyes
You'll just have to claw your way through this disguise.
"Lights! Turn on the sound effects! Action!"
"Drop it, drop it on 'em! Drop it on them!!!!!"

Serious skillz there.
Geez, he powdercoated the case. A job of that level makes me look at anything I've done (or am doing) and say, "Weak. Just weak."
That, folks, is pure art. [/standing ovation]

Its awesome and there are folks that can take Modding to an Artistic Level. Scoob, is powder coating something anyone can do at home or do you need to take it to a shop? I think that there are different kinds of Modders. Those who MOD at a Professional Level and folks like us who do the best they can with the tools they have. Seriously folks, some of the MODS we have seen here are fantastic, GaryUT's Power Supply, Scoob's Clean Machine, zackbass's W/C Rig, Adishar's Custom Rigs.. We might not have that artistic level of income and know how but we do have some fine Modders.
Next Time maybe I will get help modding my rig.;)

Most of the time it's taken to a shop, but you can get a kit from Eastwoods for a few hundred dollars to do it yourself. The main problem is that the powder needs to be baked on which means you either need a big oven or a big infrared lamp.
If you want to look into it here's a link: http://www.eastwood.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=458
Edit: misspelled powder, added link

Edit - zackbass beat me to it
No, you can't do this at home. The piece is sand blasted, then the coating is applied with a 'gun', and the whole piece is placed into a very hot oven and baked. The resulting finish is extremely hard, corrosion resistant, and depending on the type of powder coat used - Glossy finish. Strictly professional. Not cheap.
I hear what you're saying TAZ. Thanks for the kind words. I know I should be happy to see that our hobby is elevating to this level, but it kind of deflates my drive at the same time; that someone is pouring that kind of time and money into a rig, 2 commodities of which I'm usually short on in either case.
[Keep it in context when reading the following. It is an editorial thought, not a rant.]
Not to take anything away from that mod. It is a jaw dropping masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. It's just that utilizing a team of people and monster budget to build a case can be viewed as cheating by "Modding Purists" (if such an animal exists). I mean, this is supposed to be an individual effort, right? No fair getting help! I had to sand my case AND sleeve the PSU AND dremel out the stamped fan grilles in the case. There wasn't anyone to help me. You're supposed to make everything from scratch and the machine can't leave your house for any reason during the build. Aren't these the unspoken rules/ laws/ postulates of modding? Does anyone else even kind of see it this way? Oh well.
My hat's off to the creator of that case. It is one of the finest overall mods I've ever witnessed. It would appear that I have to step up my game a bit (in my own wierd ways).
To slightly alter a quote from Nicholson:
-"You make want to be a better Modder".

I've gotta say that I'm MUCH more impressed by people that don't use professionals to do the painting, welding, etc..
Hell anyone with a huge budget can make something cool. I want to see you do it all yourself. Case in point, the guy who built that big red rolling computer on the big truck tires. Was it cool? Yes. Did he do it himself? Hell no. I like to use that as an example because he was involved in a contest that was hand tool limited and he won even though he had all his parts professionally machined.
I've got access to a high power laser cutting machine through a friend and a good size mill but I'll never use them. I'd much rather cut things out myself. I'll never have someone paint something for me. If I can't do the job, I'll learn how. If it doesn't work then I won't do it.
I believe CrimsonSky does everything himself - that alone impresses me.
<end rant>

agreed - modding should be what YOU can do to your case, not what money can do for your case. ;)

I would agree that modding is a personal art. It's your idea, it's your case. If you rely on someone else to do the work, you have given up your vision, and it's become a commodity.
That being said, on the current case project I'm doing, I need some professional engraving done on a piece of glass. I cannot afford to do trial and error, since I'm using one way/two way mirror. That stuff is expensive. So I will take it to a local shop to be done, because I'd rather pay a small fee and have it done right the first time.

Thats my point exactly.. There are 2 types of Modders, just like there are two types of most everything.. Professionals and Amateurs.
We might not have the budget/sponsors but we have the spirit.
I might not be a professional but when I paint my Condo I do a pretty good damn job.. I built a nice Coffin for my dog, was damn proud that I did it by hand. ANyway, yes that was one Sweet Case, and Yes, I think its cool modding has come along so far and that most of us was there when it first started.
Thats something no-one can take from us!! :) :)

Not everyone may have the tools at hand they need to do a job they are capable of doing themselves. If you need to take a part somewhere else to do something to it, as long as you do the work yourself, and not have some one else do it for you, I still consider that self made.
Case in point, if I had to weld something on a case I was modding, and had to take the case to my dads house to use his welder, but did the welding myself, it's still a pure mod.

So while we're compiling the compendium on catagorization of modding, is it still okay if I use a CNC machine (of any type)? What if I write all the g-code? :p

You have to build the CNC machine first ;)

I agree that modding is a 'personal' thing, kinda like building a computer yourself. It gives you a sense of satisfaction like 'Look at what I did! I rule!"
But in some senses I can see where having someone else help out would be acceptable, kinda like what Un4given said about using tools or a proper environment.
I can also see getting 'help' from someone who has the knowledge in an area that I may not. Using Un4given's example again, if I wanted to weld something, I personally would need someone to help me out; show me the ropes and help me if I'm in a jam because I've never welded before.
Although I don't think I'd ever have anyone do a mod 'for me'; maybe 'show me' and I'll mod it myself, ya know? ;)
Regardless, that case is still friggin' amazing. The best part is that the hammer on the top is a handle! :p

Writing your own motion control software is legit as long as the servos come out of busted cdroms and your plotter/compiler is an overclocked PIII or above with ccfls and the CNC chuck housing has a plexi window for gear viewing.
BTW zack, your welding helmet needs a paint job too. I've personally been turning my head to this violation, but people around here are starting to talk....:p

Well, I'm not much of an artistic painter. Not to mention my welding helmet get a lot of abuse between liking to have my nose 6 inches from the torch, welding out of position, and just throwing it around. The helmet you've seen isn't the one I'm using right now. I got a new auto-darkening one a few months ago with *4 sensors* and an extra tall window. I can't even block the sensors if I try now. And, what would I paint on my helmet anyway?

I agree with James, sometimes you have to let someone else do something for you. I have done alot of things in my life, but I have never tried to etch glass so it would be out of my range. Besides the fact I don't have the tools to do it. I do as much as I can-have tools for. I would never slack any one for having a couple things on a mod being outsourced. It is all in the idea and getting it done. The idea is doing as much as you can yourself.

ironicly enough I am listening to PFloyd right now, kind of funny that I come across this post.
I saw the case in a magazine like a year ago, and was dumbstruck then, but it was only two-three pics, didn't know it was at HardOCP.
Thanks for the link,
Oh for all you FLOYD FANS,
93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia, on Sid Barrets birthday played "WISH YOU WERE HERE" the VINYL!
Every week day at 2PM, Pierre (DJ) plays a record, !not cd! of a random artist, but on this day he did a dedication for Sid, and Pink Floyd.
IT WAS BLOODY AWSOME! in a day of CD's and digital audio etc, it was sweet to hear an old crackly, popping vinyl album.
THAT TIS BE MUSIC TO ME EARS.
PINK FLOYD!!!!

I know, that is what I was saying, just that Radio Stations today play music off of harddrives, and other file formats, so hearing that was sweet, turntables are hard to find, though my roomie has one, even then finding a needle is littlerly like a needle in a haystack these days (pun intended)

wow, quite the thread revival. I cant believe i've missed it over the years. I've been seriously considering doing a Floyd mod myself, but I have no talent, just some scattered visions. This is definitely a professionally done mod. Great stuff, but I'm with GLScooby and Taz, modding has certainly lost it's "personal" touch. My congrat's to the design though, I like it.
