I have a compaq x1030us laptop that recently has stopped turning on the lcd. I called tech support and their solution of holding down the power button did not work. I also tried cycling through the display outputs and that didnt work. I was also told that it was a hd problem, so i went and replaced it. But it still wont work. I need to fix this ASAP for my sister who needs it for finals week. Help!

I hope I'm wrong for your sake, but it sounds like a dead LCD. (Since I used to do warranty repair work on a number of laptops, I've seen my fair share of 'em.) Can you connect a monitor to the system's VGA output and see if that works?
Also, with the system powered up, you might want to take a look at the LCD at different angles under bright light -- like sunlight maybe. One of the most common causes for seemingly blank LCD's is a dead backlight. If that's the case, you should see a faint picture. But since there's no backlight to shine through it, the screen would generally appear black unless you look very closely.

A dead HD? Never...
Tyr what has been recommened, it's good advice.
Hook up a monitor. If that works than it's the LCD screen or the circuitry that connects the LCD to the rest of the rig.

1) Does your laptop continue to load windows and operate properly, besides the blank LCD?
2) Also, look for a button that allows you to select between LCD / VGA output. It's usually a Fn key combination. It's possible your LCD is blank because your laptop is outputting the video signal to the VGA port.

I attached it to a monitor but it didnt work. the combo for it is fn + f4, but it doesnt work. ill try the light thing but i dont think so. either way, is this repairable? and how much would it cost?

I have had a similar problem for a few weeks now. My screen is just entirely white. I have taken it apart as much as I feel comfortable, but still no luck. I am afraid I am going to break the plastic around the LCD. I have wiggled the connections, even taken some of them off and reattached them. So, I just hooked up a monitor and now I have two desktops.

Since your VGA output works, you can be pretty sure that your problem's with the LCD or inverter. Since Gary can't even get a picture from his VGA output, I'd think his problem is probably with either the system board or video card.

If it's under warranty, you send it in.
If it's not under warranty, you can try to repair it yourself if you can find the parts or a "donor machine" on eBay. Or you can pay HP/Compaq or an authorized repair center to fix it. If you pay someone else to repair it and parts are required, it's not going to be cheap and it might make sense to go shopping for a replacement.
