I am going to college soon and will need a laptop. I am thinking about getting the 12" ibook. I am concerned about reliability. I like the ibook because its ultra portable. Is this a good choice?

Not a bad choice at all, if you don't want any heavy lifting out of it (i.e. Folding 24/7, intense gaming, etc.). iBooks are built to last longer than regular laptops, save for maybe IBM books.

I see Apple-based 'puters are perfect for regular usage. They're smooth, OS X is a total dream to use, and they're hard to bust.

I agree completely. I have an iBook, and I once dropped it onto concrete from 1.5 meters. No damage at all, except for some scratches outside. OSX is wonderful to use, if you don't want to game. Just make sure you get MS Office, as the mac office thing sucks.

The MAC OS has been good to me so far. I'm getting Tiger very soon so I can't wait. I'm just getting my feet wet and its been a lot of fun. You won't be disappointed but if this is your only laptop/computer I would think about a Powerbook instead. Yes Office is a must.

I bought the ibook a few days ago. I am excited about it getting here. I dont need it for games because i can use my primary pc for that. I decided to save the money on ram and buy it 3rd party. Will a 1 gig stick perform a lot better than a 512 stick?

I duhno. I always hear people going on and on about how great Apple Care plans are and how often they use them. I know a few people who have Macs here at school and they are always like, "I take mine in all the time, and they fix it up real fast. Their service is great." If it's such a great machine, why do you take it in ALL THE TIME? I saw a guy trying to sel an iPod with an AppleCare plan to this guy in CompUSA and he was like, "Mike over there in repairs had his iPod Mini replaced 4 times in 6 months because the battery kepty dying and he had the care plan. It basically paid for itself."

I guess the AppleCare plan is really good?!?! I don't get Apple's logic. Let's make a sub-par product, and just service it a lot? I don't hear it so much with iBooks, never with Powerbooks, but all the time with iPods.

Just a thought I've had on my mind since I heard that guy say that at CompUSA the other day. What kind of a sale tactic is that? "Yeah. This iPod is a piece of crap. It's basically not even going to last you 6 months. Better get the care plan." How about...just get another product that doesn't suck?

In OSX, yes. OSX is the biggest memory hog on the planet.

This post and the previous one make me assume you don't like apple a lot.
I have owned an iBook for 6 months. Judging by what you have said, you haven't.
Anyways, OSX performance isn't bed. Even with 256mb, anything but Photoshop and Dreamweaver at the same time feel as good as with 16gb (not that I've ever experienced 16gb. Point is, there are no slowdowns).

I don't have AppleCare on my iBook, and dont need it. My iBook fell out of my backpack once while I was walking (I had forgotten to close it) onto a hard ground once. No problem.

I cant speak for iPods, but the laptops are pretty sturdy. Saying AppleCare is a dumb idea is like saying an extended warranty on any other laptop is a stupid idea.

I agree though that iRivers > iPods :D

There is a world of difference in OSX with 256MB RAM and 512MB RAM. Get another stick, and you'll see it instantly.

I agree after a memory upgrade OS X feels faster overall with the 256mb it felt a little sluggish at times.

The Ipod was the first Apple product I bought and I think they are quite reliable. I've had a couple of the harddrive based ones and finally ended up with the Shuffle because I didn't use the mp3 player as much but I let my sister use it all the time. If the Ipod can survive the damage my sister has done to it I think its at least a great product as well as reliable.

I think AppleCare is a must if you value your product. If your screen needs to be replaced on a Powerbook thats going to cost around $900 alone. I just bought AppleCare and OS Tiger for $280. I think thats a great deal.

Not sure but I used the educational discount Applecare $239 and Tiger $69 minus a promotional code. You can get promotional codes from Apple when you sign up.

Not very playable? WoW ran great, and you didn't even have to have all the settings all the way at the bottom. What on earth did you have it set to?

I beat doom3 on my 1ghz / 768mb ram ibook...

Well the mac is not so much a machine that a user services, so the care plan does come in quite handy at times. I already sent my powerbook in because part of the casing was getting some wear and they replaced it. My mac mini needs to go back because of some weird issue with the wifi giving the sound card some interference. I personally don't think a mac is any more reliable than your typically well put together x86 box, but the os and the look and feel of the hardware is what does it for me.

That's odd, I had my settings set to their lowest and it still ran like crap on my iBook.

I'm pretty sure all the ibook's come with tiger installed.
These notebooks are awesome btw I'm getting a laptop soon and that's the exact one I'm going for, I've read a lot of good reviews plus the thing just looks fantastic and I can't wait to use osx.
