Alot of you are probably familiar with the 10" version of this sub that has been around for awhile and received alot of praise for it's price/performance ratio. The 12" version just came out a couple weeks ago and let me tell you...it rocks. It's only $14 more than the 10" so my guess is that the 12" will be the new best seller. I ordered it about a week ago and received it only 2 days via ground shipping. Hooked it up to my system (Onkyo receiver, Polk R50 fronts / R15 rears & center) and tried it out. I was suprised how musical it is. I played some pretty heavy break beats and DnB to test the response...It kept up very well with none of the "muddiness" you get with most low end subs as they try to keep up with the beat of the music. Then switched over to the LOTR: FOTR soundtrack for some orchestral action. Stunning...I could feel the bass from the strings and wind instruments in my chest at various points. Movies are a no brainer on this one. If you are strictly a movie watcher...you'll never need another sub than this one. (unless you're ht is stadium sized. :) ) Explosions..gunfire....the footfalls of a Mumakil in ROTK...unbelievable.
Easily outperforms the Ultra's sub (I have one) which for those of you that have one..know what I'm saying. It's big , fairly heavy and very solidly built, this thing reeks of quality construction and looks nice too. Great for music and movies and for $138 the absolute deal of the century. No I don't work for Dayton or PE, I just own one and am blown away by the value this thing represents. Someone please buy one of these things and back me up here :D
Sorry no db measurements or anything, but I don't currently own an spl meter. However..I was able to run the volume up to the point of pain with no audible distortion from the sub.

finally, some feedback on this. I've been avoiding putting money into a sub yet cuz i was about to pull the trigger on the 10" dayton when I heard about the 12". This is the third feedback i've seen now, and haven't heard bad things yet. I think i'll give it a few more weeks, but I'm excited!

First one is of (from left) Dayton 12, Klipsch SWS and the sub from my Onkyo HT-S760. Just to give some sense of it's size. (my son wouldn't stay out of the picture)

Unless you've got $400+ to spend...you're not going to do any better. JMHO. For $300 you could buy two of these...increase your output even more, help alleviate standing waves AND still be ahead on the money factor. :D I believe I'll be ordering a second very soon.

Thats a nice sub. I just bought a Klipsch 5.1 promedia and its just not living up to the hype, I might go this route if I can return this set.
If you still have the box could you possibly tell me the dementions of the actualy box it comes in?
The school post office apparently has rules on sizes...grrr

the box that mine came in was bigger than the box my 19" monitor came in. it. was. freaking. huge. which was good, because the thing weighed 40 pounds, and was very well packed.

Congrats on your purchase! I'm considering the same sub for a HT setup with LCD TV with either an Athena or Paradigm setup. I'm not solid with the speaker setup selection yet. Does anyone have experience with the Velodyne VX-10 and how it compares with the Dayton 12"? Thanks!

No direct experience with the VX-10 per se..but Velodyne makes some nice subs. I noticed the specs on the VX-10 only rate it down to 36hz which might be plenty for you. The Dayton is rated to 25hz on paper and I believe it although I haven't confirmed it with measurement. There is also 50watts RMS difference between the two (Velo @ 100W, Dayton @150) How big is your room?

the dayton is a true 25hz sub. or at least, things seem to rumble well enough on the freq test on the bass mechanik cd.

I'm almost tempted to buy an SPL meter to find out when I get mine...but alas, $ is an issue. I don't have another $40 to spend.

Actually I wanted to use it with an LCD TV for the living room along with HK AVR 225, LG divx player, Dayton 12" and maybe the Athena 6 Micra. Is this a good combo for movies?

The Micra's are very highly regarded for their size. The black/silver ones can be found on Amazon for $300 and include a sub. It's a pretty decent sub to from what I've read...won't rattle the rafters but in a medium sized room should take care of you quite well. That HK / Athena combo should sound pretty nice :D

Hypo_Luxa, would you mind telling me how much shipping on the Dayton was?
And are you still as enthusiastic about it's performance?
Hypo_Luxa
08-15-2005, 05:18 PM
Shipping was approx. $18 or so (UPS Ground) and it only took 2 days to get it. And yes, I still love this sub. Haven't found a chink in it's armor yet. Of course there are many subs out there that will out perform the Dayton in any department, but you're going to pay serious money for them ($400+) The price/performance ratio on the Dayton is just sick. As soon as I get back home for more than a day (work  ) I'll take some measurements with a db meter....but I'm telling you you won't be disappointed. Keep in mind also..I just set this thing up along a wall with minimal calibration. Once I take the time to set it up properly, I'm expecting even better performance. :D

Do you think that the 12" will be too much sub for a small (about 20' by 20') room?
It seems both the 10" and 12" are popular and it might come down to which is better for me rather than which is the better sub.
Hypo_Luxa
08-16-2005, 06:35 PM
'20x20' isn't all that small of a room. :) The 10" would be fine in that space I'm sure...even so I would go to the 12" just because the price difference is so small. It almost doesn't make sense to buy the 10" unless you are really strapped for cash.
Rabidmoose: Mine wasn't packed very well either...but arrived w/o a scratch. The box isn't much bigger than the sub and all it has for packing are those foam corner pieces IIRC. If you do want to replace that sub be sure to contact PE immediately...especially if the carrier ends up being responsible. Most parcel carriers have like 48hr windows to report damaged goods or you are SOL.
Be sure to let us know what you think of it!

Now that you say it, I am quite a bit off. It is closer to 12' at one point and 15' where it is widest.

Yea mine came with the foam corner peices, but they were allbroken and the box was dented... I think im not going to go through th hassle of sending it back.

I am thinking of buying one and hooking to my ultra sub
and placing one of the subs into the closet, where bass on even the ultra sub can go in the low 20s
This is sick. I mean every major manufacturer has a sub to match this at 400 dollars or more.
I guess some have 300 watts, but that only means +3db, and since most of you dont use the maximum volume that doubling in volume makes no difference
Why make a a new thread? so its one month old..
