Hey guys
I am graduating in 2006 and headed off to college and I was wondering if I should get a laptop around christmas time or wait sometime till June-august to get one
I really wanted to get a Dual core Pentium M... but I don't if they'll come by August... do you know when those come out? And how much do u think they'll be? I really don't want to go over $1200 for a laptop

Don't expect to be able to touch a brand new Dual-Core P-M in a quality notebook for $1,200.
At $1,200 I'd look at the HP nx6100 series. You should be able to get one of those with a solid P-M 740 and 1GB RAM.

Dual cores will start out in laptops that compete with the Dell Inspiron and XPS series and its ilk (i.e. desktop replacements). We'll see if they can be used on thin and lights and such.
I'm taking a wait and see attitude there, to be honest, after the i915m heat production. And considering that's just the chipset...
Yeah, the current state of the Centrino platform is pretty awful, but the Turion isnt any better. The battery lives have halved vs the first generation, and the 915 gets ridiculously hot.

dang Centrino's battery is bad now? They were getting such rave reviews. I guess it seems smart to take the wait-and-see approach, which means I'll proly get a laptop in late July / early August.

I wouldn't get any laptop other than an Apple myself. The 14" iBook is exactly $1199 using the educational discount (you ARE using the educational discount, right?). If you're determined to use Windows, I agree with Ashpool about IBM. They're ugly, but they tend to work well for a fairly long time.
Either way, wait as long as you can stand to.

Ugly? I'd rather take a 15" black box with no frills than a plastic-y piece of crap that's loaded with completely unnecessary connectors and whatnot.
I don't mean Apple, I mean every other damn laptop manufacturer out there. HP being the ugliest of them all.
Though I don't like how shiny the iBooks look. Ugh. It's like the aluminum backing of the iPods, almost eliminates the $x investment you threw into it.

The HP nx notebooks are solid black, and designed to last and take a beating.
I'm saving up to buy nx6125 myself.
