I am now a full laptop only user...
originally i started off with a badass lian-li desktop system... later in high school... i wanted something more portable so I sold my full size desktop and got a nice small shuttle and began exploring the SFF world. In college, I realized i needed a small laptop so I got a Dell 700m to complement my desktop, later upgraded to a sony s360. I decided I wouldnt mind trading a bit of portability for power power on the go. ANd i also dont like having multiple systems to synchronize. So I am getting rid of my biostar SFF and my sony laptop to be replaced by my latest purchase...
Asus Z71V ($800)
- 15.1" WideSXGA (same resolution as dell 2005fpw)
- 6.5lbs
- centrino chipset
- geforce 6600go
- 3-6hrs battery life
- 8x DVDRW
i just need to buy a cpu, ram, and hdd.... this laptop allows fsb overclocking.... so im thinking of getting a 1.6 dothan at 400mhz fsb and OCing to a 2.2ghz 533fsb dothan. what do you guys think>?

I have gone a similar route. I have had tons of desktop systems and eventually ended up with my last desktop (in a huge lian-li case). I wanted some mobility so I bought an iBook, and that was great for awhile, but I needed to be mobile with windows. Recently I sold my iBook and my massive desktop and now I own the sister-laptop to the Z71V, the Z70VA. I have the following:
1.86Ghz P-M
1Gb DDR
100Gb Seagate 5400
Intel 2915
The rest of my laptop shares the same specs as yours except mine has the mobile ATI X700. Thus far I have very much enjoyed my Z70VA and like only owning a laptop. Our batteries are supposed to get 3-6hrs, but the best I've gotten was a bit over 4 hours. I have two of my desktop hard drives in external enclosures so I haven't lost all my storage.
Going with the 1.6 and flipping the FSB switch on the laptop motherboard is a good route that lots of people have taken.
Enjoy your Asus, I love mine :)

Pinmod is definitely a great way to go.
I regret spending the money on my desktop this year, I virtually never use it, I only use my XPS 2. I do plan on getting an ultralight to compliment it, but I doubt the desktop will be seeing any upgrades again, just not worth the money, I'm staying with laptops.

I keep a dual Xeon desktop for doing graphics stuff, otherwise my laptops do the trick since most of my data is kept on 2 servers. If there was a 5 pound laptop with 4GB memory and decent graphics such as 2048x1536x32 with 512MB memory, I'd buy it.

Shouldn't be long now, the current 7800GTX is already in laptops and it shouldn't be long before more powerful variants are available. Plus netburst is not ideal for graphics work, so the laptops already have the advantage there.

Can you buy a laptop chasis that supports AMD processors?
I believe that there are some for Turion CPUs.

Personally I would go X700 and turion Route. BTW how did you like you S360? I am gonna be getting one to replace my 9300 and using that as my portable rig which will complement my desktop ;)

Solid choice. It's almost exactly what I have, even down to the o/ced 1.6GHz if you're gonna go that way.

I won't go all laptop until they can get complete upgradeability in them. I mean everything.
And even then I wouldn't unless you can cram a dozen hard drives in them. I need gobs of storage.

Who cares. It can run Civ4. Other games are for people who are scared of getting addicted.

i loved my s360.... IMHO it is the perfect laptop that blends power and portability along with the Asus W3V. you are not gonna find a better gpu or lcd screen in anything smaller than 15"... its just that i wanted MORE power and dont mind giving up some portability. the WXGA screen in particular was very limiting for my development work and getting WSXGA/WUXGA meant getting a 15" at minimum.
the 360 did get rather hot at times... but this can be fixed by using CHC (centrino hardware control) to ower the vcore and also applying AS5 on the heatsinks. other than that, it was the best in its class
