I am a CIS major and was thinking of getting a laptop so that I can write programs on the go ...

basic needs:
20GB drive is enough
DVD-ROM is a big plus
x86 CPU is a must
powerful enough to run WinXP
the smaller the better (12" screen?)
CHEAP!!! (is it even possible?)
built in 10/100 port (required)
built in wi-fi (not required, but nice)

any recomendations? ultimately, I'd love it if I can get it for about 500USD or less, but somehow I doubt it ...

EDIT: Went through dell, toshiba, and hp and found this one so far ...
Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
Intel(R) Celeron(R) M 360 (1.4 GHz)
14.0" WXGA Widescreen (1280x768)
Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 900 - Celeron
256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB)
40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
8X DVD Drive
Integrated 56K Modem + 10/100 Ethernet LAN
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Microsoft(R) Works/Money
HP Sport Backpack

Walmart's have a $398 laptop for sale on Black Friday. A HP if I recall correctly with a Sempron mobile processor, 256MB RAM, 15" screen, 40GB HDD, etc. Or you can get a Dell for <$500 on Black Friday after rebates. Check out Notebookreview.com. They've got a bunch of deals up all the time.

Wow, really?! In that case... umm Dell's laptop's supposed to be under $500. Oh and Lenovo has a Thinkpad for $599. That just sounds weird. Lenovo Thinkpad. :p

still seems like the v2000 is the better deal ...

Since you'll spend most of your day in a text editor, it really doesn't need to be that powerful. However, if you'll be using IDEs like Eclipse or Visual Studio, you will need a lot more that 256MB of RAM. I've got 1.5GB and these can bog down my desktop sometimes.

That's actually a good thing; believe me.

I only plan on running Eclipse and Dev-C++ ... I don't like Visual Studio.

I know someone who runs Eclipse on Linux on a dell laptop, I will ask him about the RAM ...

I have 1GB on my main system and eclipse doesn't bog it down ...
I could still get 256MB and then buy more ram from newegg if it runs slow, what do you think?

hmm, I really like the WXGA screen though ...

I would like the laptop to be as small as possible (14" screen) ... also, I am again thinking of witholding from the purchase, because laptops are still not "cheap enough"

then again, that V2000 looks slick ... for 525USD (25USD wifi option) and then another 50USD on newegg for a 512MB So-DIMM would make it somewhat of a beast, no?
