Compaq V2403NR vs V2000Z Celeron M vs Sempron

I just started hunting for a new notebook and starting with compaq, I found a couple in the low budget category. Aside from the extras that can be tweaked by buying direct from HP, the biggest difference between these 2 is the CPU: Celeron M vs Sempron. Which is the best performer/battery life? Any other recommendations for a cheap, decent performer with widescreen?

Also, is BrightView a big deal? Free option from HP.

The link to ebay doesn't work.

IMO I wouldn't buy a laptop in ebay. As it's such a mobile device, it can easily get damaged. You can't really be sure how the vendor treated the laptop. Other than that, I would go with the cheapest one

if the celeron m is not alot more expensive, or the same price witth similar features, id get the celeron asits a lot nicer than its desktop versionm, the differences are just 1mb cache and a 400 fsb, not 1/8 of the cache that kills the desktop ones.

I went with this Toshiba. It was on sale a while back at BB for 579 but I missed out...

the problem with the celeron m is that it doesnt have intel's speedsetp.. which KILLS battery life

As kpxgq has said, Celeron-m's lose enhanced speedstep, you're right that the performance is fine but the lose of speedstep is a big issue as this is one of the main reasons the Pentium's are so power efficient.

As far as I'm aware, Cool'n'quiet (or a power saving system) is working on socket 754 semprons:

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2139

"On a positive note, AMD has confirmed our suspicion that the NX bit and Cool'n'Quiet features of Athlon 64 will be available in K8 versions of the Sempron (3100+ and higher). The only A64 feature disabled in Sempron is x86-64."

Bear in mind the socket 754 semprons in the notebook market go lower than 3100.

didn't the semprons get 64bit mode in like june of last year?

amd's site for semprons for "small and slim" (paraphrased) notebooks show the sempron having 64bit capability
