If I don't get any I'll take the Klipsch. nkeezer 09-13-2000, 06:50 PM I've got the Cambridge DTT2500s and I love them. The 5.1 sound on DVDs is fabulous. They're not the loudest speakers out there, but I'm a college student living in the dorms -- they're way beyond adequate. Some people may complain that the bass isn't powerful enough, but that's not much of a concern for me, since I usually keep the bass turned down anyway. But that's just my opinion. If you really want to know what speakers to get, go to a store and listen to anything that fits in your price range. And make sure that they'll let you return them if you aren't happy. ------------------ http://nweb.8m.com <-- Send me a client, I'll send you a 5% finder's fee "..." -- Attributed to Ymaster Christop99 09-13-2000, 07:08 PM I got the Cambridge FPS 1000, but i sent in the sub in to get it fixed, and they sent me a new set, so i now have a 8.1 surround system, i love them TekkieJosh 09-13-2000, 08:15 PM I have the Altec Lansing ACS56 4.1 and they are incredibly good... Click here (http://www.1stclasstech.com) GTaudiophile 09-14-2000, 08:20 AM I started with the Boston BA635s that came with my Gateway. I loved them, and they constantly amazed me with their ability to produce awesome sound from tiny, 1.5" drivers. I then got swallowed up by the hype, went out on a limb by not sticking with an awesome brand (Boston), and bought the Klipsch Pro-Medias. At $280, they were the worst purchase I ever made. When pressed beyond 50% volume, my rear speakers crackled and popped. The front speakers constantly hissed, and when they did work ok below 50% volume, I could easily sense no mid-range and a high-range that was way too bright thanks to the Klipsch Horn technology. The subwoofer on the Pro-Medias is nice, but too boomy for my tastes. I prefer tight bass. Disappointed, I packed them up, and gladly sent them back to Klipsch. A few months later, I returned to Boston and bought the BA4800s. I've had them since April, and I love them. Other then the VideoLogic Sirocco Crossfires, I can't think of a system with better mid-range. The BA4800s are also a better value, often costing less than $200. The BA4800s are great for gaming, DVD movies, and especially classical music or music with detail such as Eric Clampton, Mark Knopfler, or Loreena McKennit. People really need to listen to speakers before buying them. ------------------ http://nweb.8m.com <-- Send me a client, I'll send you a 5% finder's fee "..." -- Attributed to Ymaster Raistlen38 09-15-2000, 11:11 AM I've owned a pair of Klipsch Promedias for about 6 months now and absolutely love them. My brother has the Cambridge FPS1000's and there's just no comparison. As for the hissing and crackling mentioned, there's none of that present in my rear speakers, unless you're changing the volume and even then it's very minor. Otherwise, i find virtually no distortion even when my ears start to hurt since the Klipsh's can get so loud. If you can afford them, i'd recommend them. I'll be keeping these speakers for another couple years at least. kimber 09-15-2000, 07:56 PM i went from altec 305's to the klipsch and i can say it was a good choice.the reason they get a bad review about their mid range is because the low's and high's are so dramatic.i still get amased sometimes how good they sound.take everyones advice and go listen to diffirent systems and im pretty sure you'll end up with the pro's. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/biggrin.gif GTaudiophile 09-16-2000, 01:01 AM You following me around, Kimber? DOWN WITH THE PROS! ------------------ "Why float through life when you can drive a BMW?" Mr_Q 09-16-2000, 02:46 AM I have the Cambridge FPS 1000 for about 1 year now and Im happy with them. But ,as someone posted, its a matter of taste, and before buyn' its very important to listen if u like the of the speakers. bigbear 09-16-2000, 04:03 AM I am using the Cambridge FTS2000 Digital, working with my SB Live! Value. The speakers come with a Digital DIN adapter, makes connectable to my Value card, otherwise, only work with Live! or have to buy the Digital I/O card. The sound is great, high pitch is clear, and bass is more than enough, if u place the subwoofer close to the wall, or best in a corner. The wiring is a bit messy cos they hang around on the floor, but it is not a problem. Only problem I have experienced is I can her some noise time to time when I perform action with my mouse. I have checked with some audio expert, which are friends, they said it is because the impedence built up on the motherboard. I tried to pull and plug back the jack from my sound card when I heard the noise starts to build up, and the noise disappeared. Anyone can give more advice? ------------------ yes, it is slow; but what am I supposed to do? Thalyn 09-16-2000, 07:54 AM I started out my speaker craze with an ACS45.1, and they were fantastic. The high end trebble response is a little lacking, but they sure could shake a room with the base (and it's light enough to transport, too). I switched to an ACS54 after I got my Live! (LiveWare 2.0 has lousy 2 speaker support), but the bass wasn't as good (the sub only works off the fron chanel) and the rear speakers hissed constantly (not that you noticed it when in a deathmatch!). The only plus they had was better trebble response. Now, I use a SONY MCH-DX3 mini-HiFi. The bass is big, the trebble is marvelous, and if you can't justify spending AU$500 on a set of speakers for your computer, than you can certainly justify spending it on a mini-HiFi instead, then hooking it up to your computer. 200W (100Wx2) RMS, rated at 2000W PMPO, and the pure sound quality you'd expect from a SONY. I wouldn't reccommend anything else. kimber 09-16-2000, 08:06 AM Originally posted by bigbear: I am using the Cambridge FTS2000 Digital, working with my SB Live! Value. I went through serveral high-end computer speakers, I find that ProMedias are the best sound http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/wink.gif bigbear 09-17-2000, 11:29 AM Yea, I tried almost everything to identify the problem. I tried to put the speakers' power on a standalone power jack, I tried to use the analogy wiring, but the noise is still there, I tried to clear up the wires a bit, but it is still there, actually, it is not the mouse gives off the noise, but it is some processes in the computer would give off the noise, I think it is the electronic signal on the motherboard circuit interfere the soundcard's electrical circuit. I hate the noise, damn!! I hope when I get my new CUSL2, the problem will be gone. And I found that a PCI display card would give off more noise than an AGP display. Altima 09-17-2000, 10:02 PM I have the cambridge dtt2500 and i love them, the sub is a little muddy some times but not unless you have the sub vol up hi. My friend bought the promedias a few months ago and they are very loud and crackel some times but the thing i didn't like was how high pitched they sound at more than 15% vol. It's like they kick in from mids and highs to just highs. And some songs were just shity sounding cause of the songs highs + the speakers horn tweeters. The quality of them certainly isnt on par with my own home audio setup but its far better then any altec's ive ever heard. Maybe you guys wired them wrong or something (shrug). I myself have recently ordered myself a Cambridge DTT2500 dolby digital 5.1 system and am eagerly awaiting its arrival in the mail. Cost me $198 and will be a damn good upgrade from my current 2.1 setup Shr00m 09-20-2000, 08:17 PM I have a Live Platinum with the coax digital output running to a Sony Reciever with decoder built in powering 2 Infinity RS-8's, a bose center channel, 2 Infinity bookshelf for rear channels, and a 8" JBL Sub. Screw computer speakers run your computer to your home entertainment center. It sounds 10 times better/louder. gammaray51 09-21-2000, 12:59 PM Originally posted by Shr00m: I have a Live Platinum with the coax digital output running to a Sony Reciever with decoder built in powering 2 Infinity RS-8's, a bose center channel, 2 Infinity bookshelf for rear channels, and a 8" JBL Sub. If you allready have the home speakers... you might as well use them. Besides there is no way that a small 6 inch sub is going to push more SPL than a nice 12 is scary_jeff 09-21-2000, 04:32 PM i was gonna get some cambridge fps thing but i got a hifi instead with connection to computer. a decent hifi is a much better idea cos its also a cd player etc, its as loud as your gonna want it to be, and for alot of people (including me) who mainly play games and mp3s, thers no need for 4 speakers if youve got some decent headphones and a decent souncard. so thats my thought, get a hifi and a conector cable, then you have got your speakers and a new hifi Tiberius 09-21-2000, 05:48 PM Redfish, I started with a pair of Koss 4 watt(****! that was 8 years ago...sorry)... I gave up on the Boston acoustics I had (4 flat panel and sub) for the config I had several times before... SONY AMP(ANY AMP) and 2 BOSE bookshelf biggies upended attached to a spare BOSE AM5 Subwoofer. MASSIVE POWER ENSUED!!!. Used to use a 8" AIWA powered sub and it was cool but the clarity of the BOSE MAN!!!!!!! However, I'm a personal supporter of KLIPSCH as I have 8 of their full line speakers 2 KG5.5's, 2 KG3.5's, 2 KG1.5's, 1 KSV5(center), 1 KV3(center). For the full package the Klipsch 4+1 speaker package is a beauty indeed. Otherwise, just get a stero amp and (I left surround behind, I know...) enjoy the pure clarity and MASSIVE power of hundreds of watts of power to each channel.
