Is this possible? I would really like to do it. I could just buy my domain name, and make my computer the server which it resides on. If this is possible, how do I do it? I am under the impression that Apache is what can do this. Any information would be great

DOWN WITH ACRONYMS!!! TYPE OUT THE WORDS!!!
Yes It's possible, and Yes again ,Apache and MS IIS and others are used for this.U need an AT LEAST an high end computer and a very good conexion for this(keep in mind that U want the site up 24/7).Once that the number of hits becomes unbereable,U will need to upgarade both.So ,It's up to you ,but I dont see the reason to do that for an upcoming site, having in mind the amount of money U will pay and the time U will need until ur site becomes profitable.
About the way U do this, there are also various types of configurations (both hardware and sofware that u can use),but this is really to long to be posted here:starting with simple NT/linux single server,Unix server, database driven servers ,and various other configurations.
If u mail me,or post here,more details about what u wanna do,maybe I can help U more.Until then ,check this links: http://webcompare.internet.com/cgi-bin/quickcompare.pl http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1305
Good luck!

Do this all you want, the only hard part is writing the DNS entries for your domain. Make sure that you have a static IP becuase you don;t wanna be updating your DNS entries daily, hell even weekly. As far as a high end PC. I host this domain, www.badmotherfuker.org, (http://www.badmotherfuker.org,) off a P60 w/16 MB RAM running Apache on a Red Hat box at my house. It is very easy.
