Yes, you may have luck connecting a 802.11b (WiFi) access point from one house to another on their own, but the bandwidth will probably be low (1-2 megabits). It all depends on what kind of interference (physical and eletrical) there is between the two houses and where the access points are located. But, put each in a upstairs window facing each other and who knows? Maybe you might get 5.5 or 11 meg?
A way to assure high bandwidth would certainly be to get 2.4 gigahertz outdoor directional antennas and point them at each other and hook them up to the external antenna loops of the access points (assuming the ones you buy have them).
Of course, this would be overkill for 200 feet. According to a chart I have from Lucent on 802.11b ranges, it would thoretically be good for 11 miles @ 11megabits.
Unfortunately, this is a crap-shoot and an experiment for most people right now. 802.11b is fairly new and there hasn't been a lot of data or reviews on the home user side. I personally think 802.11b and 802.11a (which will allow for 35? meg and have systems out next year) will spawn a new internet technology, something like LWANs. Local Wide Area Networks. You can have your own High-Speed WANs within a 10+ mile radius.
You might try www.practicallynetworked.com (http://www.practicallynetworked.com) for their wireless info. I know a user specifically posted that he did connect using Proxim Symphony equipment and the 2.4 megahertz grid antennas to a buddy some 5(?) miles away.
If you have the bucks to burn and the time to experiment, you won't have a problem. Its just at what speed do you want to do it at?

as long as my neighbors (grandparents) can use the net fast, because i proxy my cable modem to three poeple in my house, and im making them a computer and wanted to get them on the net to without dialup

Maybe you should just run cat5 to their house...you wont get decent bandwidth out of wireless ethernet links cheap...of course, I don't know what kind of b/w you get, but cable modems can yeild 5-6Mb/s, maybe more? The wireless equipment I install for aparments is 3Mb/s and 2000$ per unit...4000$??? You can get your place trenched and wired for a LOT less than that, and have 100Mb/s between buildings...

but it is illegal to run a network cable between our two houses, because the fact i am giving them free access to my cable modem service

We already have stuff with 11mbit microwave that has a range of 65 miles if you have a booster at your antenna. There are even repeating systems out there. Theortically you could cover some huge ground with this stuff. The equipment is about $600 for each node. There are about 60 people running this in my town. slick stuff.
So for $1200 you could talk to anyone anywhere within about 35 miles (the main antenna for the ISP that has this as a service has a huge boost and is really sensative.)
