For my new pc i can choose which NIC i want, a friend of mine has a D-Link, he hasnt reported any problems, but then again, he aint no computer whiz. I can also get a 3com, but for more cash. Would a D-link be ok? I don't know much about them.

I have two D-Link DFE-530TX+, and four of my roommates have them too. They work great for us on our home network.

I have both types, 3 Com (with an Intel chipset)and Linksys (I picked up the 3Com used when I needed another NIC in a hurry and didn't weant to go clean across town) For all practical, garden-variety purposes, I can't se a significant difference between the two, although the 3Com offers more remote management options. In a home network setting though, this is pretty much a non-issue. Save the cash and get the Linksys, or a Netgear 311 (great card, about the same price, and it tolerates overclocking the PCI bus better than the Linksys does).

I have a 4pc lan at the house running all D-link 530+ without a hitch. I would use a switch though. They are just as cheap as a hub now.

Don't bother with the 3Com stuff...
get a D-Link card and save the headaches at LAN parties.

I currently have a DFE530tx+ on my computer. Absolutely no probs at all for only 10 bux. Save your money and get the D-link.
