It seems everyone is buying these things. What can you do with them that you can't do with an organizer? I find the internet access pretty worthless. What kind of programs run on those things?

...for starters. It's a bit tricky to explain. The best way is to find a friend/coworker/whoever that has one and ask for a demo. Of course, usage varies from person to person.
I got my Palm Vx primarily for the calendar and memo apps. I was really getting tired of all these scraps of paper and the old fashioned planners just weren't my thing. There are some other apps that I use as well:
- several different games, from chess to puzzle games, to RPG's, to old arcade games
- engine16 suite of apps for film/video production
- shoplist for grocery lists and other day-to-day "to buy" lists
- diddle for doodling
- vindigo to find new places to eat/shop (I don't really use this much)
- convert it (a handy conversion utility)
- mapopolis (mapping software)
- showtimes for movie listings
- QuickOffice for word processing (also includes a spreadsheet app and chart app, all designed to integrate with MS Office)
- TrekSounds so my Palm Vx can make annoying Star Trek sounds
- HackMaster so I can use TrekSounds
All in 8MB! Actually, about 6.7MB.
As you can see, there are really all sorts of things that you can do with these devices. I'm sure you'll find similar info about the Pocket PC as well . . .
