Hey
I am planning on buying an Mp3 player and I am highly considering the Rio 800 128MB. Any alternative suggestions? Know of any places I can get reliable reviews? I need a decent amount of space (64 minimum) with room for expandibility
I was thinking of buying a CD Mp3 player, but those are too big for my liking.
Misc Question: Can any normal CD player play a CDR with files converted from Mp3 to WAV? My current one is in need of replacing.

Before you go out and get a mp3 player check this out http://www.audio.philips.com/expanium/expanium.asp

It'll be out in the 4th quarter, so I am thinking Dec.

expanium looks ***. no id3 tag support & bad display. nice concept, but half-assed attempt.

to answer your question: yes, most cd players can play CD-Rs. obviously it might not like all your media, though. the TDK Mojo is a pretty nice MP3 CD player, but yes, it's not nearly as compact as today's CD players. I have a Rio500 which you can upgrade to 192Mb (adding an additional 128Mb smartmedia card). I LOVE IT. The 800 is cool too & you can bump it up with backpacks (although Rio is very slow to release new sizes; although the MicroDrive "Extreme" one should go down in price, as IBM just lowered their prices across the board). I also have a RioVolt MP3 CD player, which is bulky, skips, and has a realy bad screen (with some dancing fairies... no, i'm not kidding).

My suggestion would be to buy a solid-state player & also get a replacement regular CD player. You just can't get anytinhg as small and portable as a solid-state.

or better yet, buy an MP3 CD player from a place like buy.com (if they still exist by the time you read this) who has a good return policy. so you can try it out yourself and return it if unsatisfied.

I got the Rio 600 64MB a few months ago and I love it. The only function the Rio 800 adds over the 600 is a voice recorder... the 600 and 800 are pretty good choices. I'd recommend holding out on a magnetic or optical (Read: Nomad-esque and RioVolt-esque) mp3 player in favor of solid-state.

I just recently bought the Archos Jukebox 6000. It holds up to 6 gigs of music and doubles as an external hard drive. So far, its been pretty good to me. Although it is a bit larger than your average MP3 player, it also holds a lot more for your $

The Creative Labs NOMAD II MG Special Edition has a 256MB of internal memory and supports SmartMedia expansion up to 128MB cards. It also has a voice recorder and an FM radio. It looks to be very thin too. However it is very expensive... 350 dollars straight from Creative.com... Can't find it anywhere else.

I agree about the RIO 500's. I have two (one for the girl), both with 128MB total. Great down at the gym etc... Solid state = no skip and great battery life. One got stolen not long ago, and i didn't hesitate to buy another, just have to have one.
