PHP vs Coldfusion

Hey folks, just wanted some input from people who've worked with both scripting languages. I've personally worked with PHP myself, but never Cold Fusion.

Which one is better?

Which one is easier to use?

I've been told that some people don't like PHP because of it's "open-source" nature, while Cold Fusion has more strict guidelines...I'm not sure if that sort of thing influences my decision. The limited PHP work I did do was nothing but enjoyable. I found the language amazingly easy, intuitive, and poweful.

So if you had the choice of one over the other, which one would you go with and why?

I'd go with ColdFusion myself. For one, it's an incredibly easy language to learn, very similar to languages like HTML. Also, it's probably the one of the most popular web design languages out there. ASP has more fans, but the hardcore coders stand by it http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/smile.gif. I'd recommend giving ColdFusion a try, I'm 14, and I'm already learned a lot about it, so if a high schooler can use it, it's gotta be easy to learn, and it's got some great dynamics to it.

I've been wondering about whether to learn asp or php, and now you come clutter up my decision process with another one - coldfusion? sheesh http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/mad.gif j/k

I am slowly beginning to read some of each language, but I haven't really got into it yet, so I'll see what others weight in with in this thread http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/wink.gif

So far it looks like it will be php though. Asp is microsoft and may not live as long.

PHP is the way go go. It's free, it's fast, it's open source, so bugs get fixed fast (or you can fix them yourself), there is a huge user community to go to for help, and it runs on IIS/NT, and most (all?) platforms that Apache runs on.

With both ASP and ColdFusion, you are shackled to Windows (ok, ok, there is the ChiliSoft stuff for ASP on Unix...dunno how well it works), and to a single corporation for everything.

With ASP and ColdFusion you _do_ have the advantage of having an IDE and debugging built in (VisualStudio for ASP) which is nice.

I've only worked with PHP myself, and so far I *love* it to death. Thanks for your input guys. I might still learn some Coldfusion before the month is out for the heck of it. Looks good on a resume eh? http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I believe php is the way to go as forementioned by a listing of its previous attributes. I have not looked at coldfusion, however. But from what I have seen in php I'd suggest it to anyone. The instant I came upon it I fell in love with it. There are so many platforms available for it and it is getting to be tightly integrated with Apache and MySQL as well.
