I just started taking an Enterprise Java class that focuses on web applications. On the first day of class, my professor said that Servlets will replace CGI scripting. Kind of a bold statment to me. So I was wondering if any of the java users here could voice their opinion about this subject. Maybe some of the advantages/disadvantages of each. I'd ask my professor, but she's one of those people are are fanatics when it comes to Java. She has her Java mug, Java shirts, Java Pictures, etc.

Doubt it. There is so much that can be done very easily in scripting languages that is hard in Java. Especially backend stuff. Why would you want to call a Java servlet to update a database, when you have PHP? Why would you want to use Java to process regular expressions when Perl is so much better at it? Java has it's place, but I don't think we'll see the demise of scripting anytime soon.
