I have RoadRunner service and they give out so many megs for peoples homepage.....only I dont know where to begin. My cousin has a homepage but its basically just a directory like that one where the tricked out gaming rig is at...I want a homepage like www.planetdong.com (http://www.planetdong.com) or something!

www.webmonkey.com (http://www.webmonkey.com) is a great all-in-wonder site.

I initially learned HTML using the following tutorial: http://www.pagetutor.com/pagetutor/makapage/

If you can get a hold of Microsoft FrontPage (A part of the Office package), it's a great starter on websites. That's where I started.

Adobe GoLive 5 is a good one too. It's much more than a designer, it also organizes and ftps your website up to your account. If you have the resources, i'd suggest picking it up.

This is how I learned html. That and a book based on w3.org's website, which is the official keeper of the html standard (That's the w3 consortium in case you didn't know, they developed NCSA Mosaic, the first gui web browser, along with CERN, the high energy research facility in Switzerland.)

Here is a basic HTML page:

<html>
<head>
<title>
This is my page.
</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>This is my freakin' web page.</h1>
</body>
</html>

I use this same template for any page I need to create, which isn't often. You can gain a lot of insight into html just by using this template though.

Making a websitre is a piece of cake. I like 100%'s example. I also learned it by looking at other site's source.

If you want a good wysiwyg (which I don't recommend compared to plain html coding) only Frontpage out of the respectable ones is free I think. (At least frontpage express). Try that if you're all for wysiwyg programming...

I have a fairly good talent for HTML. I don't use any WYSIWYG, and I can get a decent-looking web site (with content, no less) in about a weekend.

Another technique to use is when you see a web page you like, simply make a copy to study later. In IE click on View then Source to get a Notepad window with the HTML in it. Then save it for later study. You can also click File, Save As to get a complete copy of the page including everything in it.

I started with Dreamweaver, really easy stuff (WYSIWYG)... think Dreamweaver is better than Frontpage? Or vice versa?

What? I thought Frontpage Express was part of the Office package... oh well, you live and learn.

From the tests I have read, Dreamweaver Ultradev has always come out on top, so when I am going to buy my first WYSIWYG editor that will be the one, no doubt.

Just play with it. The HTML part really isn't that hard at all -- it's building something that looks nice that takes both practice and a certain amount of artistic ability.

The very first site that I build was *THE UGLIEST* thing you've ever seen. I used AOL's "Personal Page" program about 4 years ago to make a 5 page site with a solid purple background color, 3 "Under Construction" signs on each page, and (I **** you not) a MIDI of "Chariots of Fire" as my background music <shudder>. Trust me, things didn't get much better for another 2 years. It just takes some time.

Myself, I still code *everything* by hand using just notepad. Sounds a bit laborious, but I've been typing it out so long that it doesn't take much longer than using a WYSIWYG editor would, and the results are infintesimally cleaner. Example: I put this site (http://www.uscreditonline.com/preview) together (design included -- everything but the content) in just a couple of hours.

Not bad, nkeezer, I think you could do a better job of your current website with Flash... are you going to design your site entirely in Flash?

I was thinking about doing a Flash version of the site. Right now, though, it's kind of on the back burner for a couple of reasons:

1) I don't really like Flash sites as a rule, and
2) I simply don't have the time.

I might do a Flash version in the future, especially if I leave my current job (strongly considering it) and need something new to add to my portfolio that could attract clients.

I always tell guys new to web page making to NOT use a WYSIWYG editor. You don't learn HTML that way, you just learn how to use the wysiwyg editor itself and you'll really regret that when you get into dynamically generated web sites. I recommend getting Allaires Homesite (http://www.allaire.com), it's a free trial download, has awesome reference documentation, and really really helps you learn HTML the right way. You edit the code by hand, but it also has tons and tons of useful and time saving features.
I also advise against using Notepad as it doesn't save in UNIX text format, doesn't do syntax highlighting, and just plain doesn't have even the most basic text editing features needed. Wordpad would be a better choice if that's the way you want to go about it, but as I've hinted at, Homesite is the best. I still use it when I do webpages in Windows, and I've convinced the design company I work at of over 20 employees to switch to it from Frontpage 2000.

There are several HTML editors available as shareware or freeware that are WYSIWYG. A really good one is called FirstPage, I believe you can download it from ZDTV.com as freeware. I would suggest that you take the time to pickup a really basic book on HTML, such as one of the Dummies books and learn the basics first tho. I think the editors will make a lot more sence too you then.
Good Luck, Bro.
