I really like Visual C++ 6.
The IDE is really good.

if you arnt, the standard version is going to run you about 100 dollars. Most colleges will be able to give you a licensed copy for free, and free is always the way to go.

Nothing is for free in this world. I'm sure you pay for it indirectly with tuition or related fees. But if your college offers it, take it since you've already paid for it.

I picked up Visual C++ from my school's bookstore for $50. It's the standard version which I've seen for $100 in the usual places. Student software prices rock! http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have Visual Studio Enterprise Edition.
Knowing people that know people that have a business that have software and CD burners rock.

Yes, but I decided to actually buy a version of VC++. I could actually afford it, so I bought it http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/smile.gif

That's all that I've gotten that's very cheap through UTD. But WOW! Talk about cheap. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The University of Texas system has a deal with Microsoft that they will provide the University system with software that will cost only $6/cd. (Cost of burning for the companies that sell it... Plus a bit of profit, I guess.) Microsoft gets people who will likely get their bosses to buy Microsoft software. Not a bad, if you ask me. Wow, a smart move by Microsoft. Will wonders never cease? http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The unfortunate thing is that we don't get any documentation. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/frown.gif

I am using free software for practicing on when I'm at home called Bloodshed Dev-C++. It is an integrated development environment and is similar to the borland package. You can download it at http://www.bloodshed.net/download.html
It's released under the GNU.
I'm using it for just C at the moment and I'm not having problems with it.
Just a suggestion if that's the type of thing you're looking for...
