How many of you use notepad?
Frontpage 2001?
Flash/Dreamweaver?
Any other programs?
I'm just curious. My HTML skills leave something to be desired, so was just wondering what everyone else used.

I use Cold Fusion Studio 4.5 It's meant for Cold Fusion...but it's great for any web coding you're doing. It's like a deluxe "HomeSite" really, because it's made by the same people...Allaire.

I use Notepad for most of my web design, I'll use Frontpage (98, 2000) to create a table quickly. Frontpage does a number on any ASP scripts that I put in my webpages though, randomly adding spaces, tabs, whatever.

I use wordpad for perl because for some reason notepad on NT systems wont convert some characters. Like dashes, end of line, even some double qoutes. I don't know why, but it just does it. Mostly I use wordpad to write the program and pico editor after to make fixes and stuff.

That's pretty strange, I've never encountered that problem before myself. On my notepad (on NT system as well), newline characters are always captured accurately.
I know with PHP at least...you have to parse a new line character from a Windows system by using both the return, and newline escape codes.
Meaning...
\r\n = New line in Windows
Perhaps that was the problem you were running into. I'm not sure, and maybe with Wordpad the newline can be parsed simply as \n? I'm really not sure. I've just never liked Wordpad http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/smile.gif

It's not that. The end of line char that is placed when you hit enter key shows up as a black block. So, instead of guessing which character it is, I use wordpad.

Well, all the actual *designing,* that's done in my head. But I use Photoshop (and occasionally Flash) to realize it. To code the pages, I just use Notepad.
Some examples:
www.nweb-design.com (http://www.nweb-design.com) - my personal site
www.patricia-taylor.com (http://www.patricia-taylor.com) - the one site of mine that everyone seems to really like
www.metavista.com (http://www.metavista.com) - the last site I did (it's been almost a year now http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/frown.gif)
www.vogel-usa.com (http://www.vogel-usa.com) - site for the company my mom works for
www.beautyq.com (http://www.beautyq.com) - looked really good until they put the content in and mucked everything up
I'd consider myself a fairly decent designer. I'm just horrible at marketing/sales.

Man what are you talking about?!! Do you even realize what you are saying? If you use an editor to do your design/layout, it is just doing the code for you! When you create a website with notepad/pico/whatever, you preview it in your browser, and if it doesn't look good, you re-design it by adjusting the code. I hang out in #webdesign and #html a lot on Efnet and they couldn't stop laughing when they saw your message.
For your info, I site I made with strict HTML is www.madmemory.com. (http://www.madmemory.com.) Not mine anymore but it's pretty much the way I left it.

I use Dreaweaver & Fireworks 4 combo for nearly all my webdesign now, but also Photoshop and various utilities. I only ever use the code view in Dreamweaver, and hit F12 to preview in the browser every now and then. It's important to have a good eye for design in webdevelopment. Coding is just the "behind the scenes" of the final product.

Dude... If you have ten nested tables in a page... then you must have your head waaaay up your ***.
I use Cold Fusion Studio and code everything by hand, and do the layout in photoshop. Its borderline impossible to create a database driven site with a program like Frontpage since it puts so much damn garbage in your code. I have been doing HTML full time since 1994 and believe me, the best way by far is by hand. I have never met a professional designer that does it a different way cept' maybe with dreamweaver.

Coding: 1st Page 2000, Arachnophilia or sometimes Notepad
Graphics: Corel Draw/Photopaint or Adobe Photoshop (I still haven't figured out how to use it properly yet)
And when I'm feeling lazy: MS Frontpage 98 (but not often at all).

I used to use ::shudder:: Netscape composer. Then I realised how mucked up my code was, and how little control i really had over it. So I learnt HTML and now I use Notepad. ahhh. Sometimes I use Firstpage 2000, but that's mainly just if I have trouble with tables or something like that. Besides, I like how little memory notepad takes up, and how fast it is to start.

Notice the IE and Netscape handle table border differently, if you want to gurantee the line is signle black line, you have to use nested table, or graphics.

I use Notepad+, which is just a version of Notepad with all the standard keyboard shortcuts that, for some unknown reason, was left out of standard Notepad (CTRL+A - select all, CTRL+S - save, etc etc).
To anyone who claims notepad to be inefficient, you should watch how fast I can highlight, copy, paste, replace, etc with the keyboard...<boast>it's almost superhuman</boast>. If I had to point and click for all of that, my pages would take much longer...not to mention my shoulder would fall off. One way or another isn't necessarily right, but for me there's no question.
I've been trying to learn dreamweaver cause my wife swears by it, and it's a lot better than any other html editors I've seen, but I'll always be most comfortable in Notepad+, even for nested tables running 10 levels deep.
I use Photoshop and Illustrator for images, and my wife's going to teach me Flash someday, but that's about it for my arsenal of tools.

Yeah, I know you need to use nested tables, but there is no reason you should have to use them ten deep. There is always a better solution than going that deep.
