I believe it was the sample program in the first book on C programming, wrote by the creators of C (not sure of the exact names)

Hmmm, I wonder what the first program said in the old-skoo Cobol or Fortran books? Probably just "Hello."

It is in the K & R C book way back before ANSI C ever saw the light of day.

Actually, he was really talking about K&R. You have to remember that the second edition of K&R was devoted to ANSI C.

I'm pretty sure that it DIDNT originate in that book though. If you look at the context of how they say it in K&R:

As taken from K&R Second Edition:
"The first program to write is the same for all programming languages..

By the context and feeling of this, they state it like it was made a staple of languages before the book came out.

It probably originated with Fortran or COBOL or maybe even (eek) QBasic.

Who knows.

Who knows, in modern day COBOL and RPG books the first program written is some sort of file access program resulting in a hard copy print out when the program is called so the 'Hello World' program is non existant. Perhaps a trip to the computer section of your local used book store will yeild some historical processes in action to help answer your hunger for trivia.
