Welp, today is the day. 2 weeks in the works, and this is my last day on the job. Listen to this crap though...
1 1/2 weeks ago, they tell our division we're all being laid off this friday. We'll get 2 weeks severance and accrued vacation.
Time passes, its the big lay-off day. And word gets passed down, that now they're taking away our severance, and we get nada! Bastards... they're cheap as hell, so I'm not surprised really... but still... they straight-up lied to us.
Ahh well, its a crappy company to work for anyways.

That sux. We just had some layoffs, but everyone left with four weeks severance. Of course, they were out of the building three minutes after the layoffs were announced...

The plant I worked at is dumping 253 ppl in the next 6 months, 237 hourly 16 salaried. No word yet on who's losing their job though. We only know that many positions are being cut.

That's just downright mean of them! I went though getting laid off last year and know how it feels (well sorta, got 2 weeks severance). It's a very tough job market these days, so don't wait before prepping your resume and getting it out there right away. As long as you're persistant with the job searching something will come up as there are still jobs out there, just you're competing with many others that are out of work also.

Motivating yourself can be hard, but in order to get a new job you just have to be very persistant. Good luck to you! Assume you're in programming of some sort, since you made your post here?

Yeah I am a web developer. Well I spoke to the HR department and told them what I had been told about severance and they gave me 1 weeks worth. So its better than nothing I guess. Now I gotta start the hunt again.
Thanks for the support.

Depending on what area of web development you're in you should be fine. There are plenty of jobs for back-end work (especially JavaServlet, JSP, ASP), not as much on the front-end though.
I recommend www.dice.com (http://www.dice.com) as a source for job ads, it was the only place that I actually got calls back after submitting my resume - hotjobs and monster were hardly worthwhile for me.

I have noticed that most employers are totally jaded right now -- nobody responds to anything anymore.

Tell me about it... I've been fairly active about sending resume's since early January and I've only received one response, and that was an automated e-mail response.... *sigh*
I've been out of work since Nov. 30. That Friday (the 30th) I learned a little after 12p that my exit interview was at 1p. Thankfully, I had accrewed 6 weeks of severance (3.9 years there) with what vacation I hadn't taken.
My biggiest problem is my lack of programming skill and experience. I'm not an incredible programmer, and while I was a Co-Op, I didn't get many programming assignments to expand my programming skills. http://63.146.109.206/ubb/frown.gif

I was a Co-op for 3.5 years. I was then hired full time Software Engineer from July to Nov. *sigh*

Ugh that sucks. What kind of experience do you have?
It seems like theres more web job postings out there than there was last april when I was hunting last. But if you've been out since November that doesn't make me feel too good.

Sounds like you have a chance. I was laid off from a good programming job in September of 1990 and unlike the one who said (s)he had little experience, I had too much experience. Being one who had specialized in communications software associated with one of the second tier main frame manufacturers and over 50 at the time, I was considered to be too specialized for those who were hiring. This in spite of the fact that I had a demonstatable record of learning different machines and different programming languages. They did not want to pay the bucks I had been getting and did not feal that I would stick around for less. Younger folks have it a bit easier. http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Keep your chin up!

I was laid off in Nov as well, after 3 years with a F500 company. When it comes down to it, there is no such thing as job security.
If you are out of work and you have gone through your notice pay and severance pay, then file for unemployment. At least then you'll have more time to find full-time work, and still be able to pay the bills somewhat.
Also, resumes are the key to getting the interview--post yours at monster.com, etc, etc. I dont have too much experience, and yet I receive calls about my resume from recruiters as well as HR departments, almost on a daily basis.
I bought "Interviewing For Dummies" yesterday, read it last night, and *COULD NOT BELIEVE* how mistakes I made in my previous interviews. Before, I just wanted to get it over with--"I have a degree, so I get the job, right?" But NOW, I am actually looking forward to my next interview, as I am that much more confident I will be offered the job! I'm sure "Resumes for Dummies" and "Cover Letters for Dummies" by the same author is just as helpful (I have different sources for those). I'd recommend "Interviewing for Dummies" to anyone who needs a job in this economy to get the edge that they need, even if your interview is tomorrow, get this book!
Thanks for reading my whole spiel--good luck! And no, I dont own any "For Dummies" stock, etc--just trying to help out :P

My problem is that most people want that 5 years of experience and if you don't have that then they won't hire. I'm not a web developer, and that's one reason that y'all don't see me posting too much around here. I'm useless in that area because I've never had a reason to get into that.

I'm trying, my friend. I'm trying. It's just not easy with my wife pregnant (due in May) and very few options for health insurance in the future. *sigh*
Yeah, I need to apply for unemployment.

Foruntately I have been lucky myself. I got a Co-Op position through the summer. I work help desk stuff and do misc. things, but I'm begging my boss for some programming assignments. I don't want my programming experience to go stale and get left behind in the market. Good luck with everyone out there. It's a tough market. I think I've been able to get this job because I think I'm tax-ductible although I'm not sure about that. That certainly doesn't mean that there's no chance of me to lose the job however as companies rarely look beyond short-sited goals. After all, all companies say they try and go for long term goals, but how many put their money where their mouth is?
Edited for Spelling mistakes.

Companies have always had the same goal--make money, period. There is no such thing as loyalty in the workplace anymore, if there was any in the first place. I was at my job for 3+ years before getting laid off in Nov. Some had been there for over 14, and have families.
By laying off so many people, companies across the country effectively took that much more money out of the economy, which sinks EVERYONE deeper into the recession. As employees and potential employees, we need to do wake up and do as the companies do: look out for number one!

Well, I must say, I was where you are. I got laid off in August, but fortunately found new work in October. I do database work, so fewer people are competing for the same job. Still, persistance is the key. Good luck.

I have been out of consistent work for longer than you have, Galen... Any responses recently?
I got an automated response a couple weeks ago, and I was buzzed... sad, isn't it.
Over the last 6 months I have done a bit of light contracting work, and my unemployment is all gone... I don't know what to try, since employers and even headhunters don't respond anymore.
My skills are top-notch, my professional biography is in the Who's Who of Information Technology, I have a great deal of experience (over 5 years), and I do not even get responses.
I guess I could have it worse -- I have a friend with over 25 years of experience, a Master's degree, and a really serious skillset, and he is getting no response as well...
I just hope that Bob comes through -- he can normally find work in the strangest of places, and he has been successful in getting me into an excellent job twice in a row. If IBM were hiring, I would already work for them...
Of course, much of my free time is spent on my top-secret project, which, if successful, should fix the problem for all of my highly skilled friends that are out of work. :)

I have been there, and getting laid off is never good, especially since it seldom comes at a good economic time.
If your company is letting go or more than 50% of their employees and has more than 100 they have to give six months notice, or else pay you for tht six months.

A single automated e-mail response from a temp agency.
So basically, no. :(
I was told that I should physically appear at Southwest Airlines (lookin' for techies over there) and that would give me a better chance than just faxing my resume to them. I'm planning on doing that today.

Welp, I went and talked to a head hunter today. Not even an automated response from anyone else. Woo-hoo.
I dunno, at least its better than it was 5 months ago right? Right?
