I'm building my live in girlfriend her first computer. Since I'll be shelling out some of the money for it I want it to double as a video capture rig for TV shows mainly. This rig will not be a gaming rig and it's main use will be school work and the Net. First should I get an AIW card or should I got with a mb with integrated graphics and get a pci tv capture card. If I do go with the AIW would a 8500le work for me?
Just go AIW...the AIW 9000 Pro is about $120-150...realy cheap.
Since there is no gaming or anything may as well go with integrated video and get a tv capture card. That should save you about $50 since tv cards aren't too expensive.
Logically, you should go with Primate's idea and go with a separate TV capture card. Since I'm a bad influence and I own an AIW card. I suggest that since you have the opportunity to try an AIW card, you should go for it. There's nothing like it. Plus, your girlfriend might want to join you in a LAN party. I say always be ready for everything.:D
you could pick up an AIW 7500. or AIW VE.
The low end AIW's aren't too expensive and they have a lot more features than just TV-capture. They may come into use in the future.
And also, some onboard video (I'm thinking Intel) is so lousy that even 2D isn't good..
I think I'll go AIW. Now the number game 8500le or 9000? The higher number should be better but I know that's not always true (ie 9500Pro - 9600Pro). Thanks for all the help.
The 9000 is slower than the 8500, it has one less tmu per pipeline. However, you have to be careful with 8500 speeds, some of the AIW cards were clocked very slowly, in which case a 9000 pro would be faster.

Oh the AiW 8500, I'm only aware of two models. The 128MB AiW8500 clocked at 275/275, and then the AiW8500DV which was clocked lower (~230/~230?) and added a firewire port on the back of the card.
Now, the AiW9000 if I remember correctly was similar to the 8500Le which had clocks ranging from sub-200 to roughly 250, so as they said above, it might be worth your while to get an "older" 8500 version as it could be a bit faster.
Older AIW are slower compared to their regular counterparts. The AIW 8500 is slower compared to the Radeon 8500.
ATi corrected this on the 9xxx series, now a AIW 9000 Pro is just as fast(sometimes faster) than a Radeon 9000 Pro.

Just to add to that, it'll be perfect, 'cause it's not that far away from the performance of your current card. Just make sure you download/install the drivers in the right order. That makes a whole world of a difference for your capture quality.Quote:
